Moved to Linux (Back)
 

Well it took less time than i thought it would.

I am finnaly on linux and its working whoo.

problems while installing:

Accidently setupped Grub on my windows harddrive = NO WAY BACK

Accidently corrupted my fstab and linux killed itself = REINSTALL

While emerging X, power cut and it took me 3 hours to find and delete the corrupted tars

While trying to get X to run, the startx program didnt work (dammnit)

I wish linux upon no man :)

emerging KDE kept failing, started on gnome, gnome refeses to emerge, fixed kde problem, emerging kde again,


Ive been compiling package 4 of 40 for 6 hours.

Linux needs to die.

Yeah you have to be really careful about what you choose in your MAKE file if you're doing stage 1 and 2 installs. I had several problems when I didn't include a few things that several programs required like QT once.

KDE is a monster to compile, but it's worth it after you finish. Personally, I think you should have emerged fluxbox or windowmaker first so you could do a litle multitasking if you wanted (you can with just the cli, but it's easier with a gui)

Hell no. I need no bloated desktop environment. Also, I like Gnome much more.
Heh. I am running on blackbox and openbox for about a year by now.
I would just install stuff while running Knoppix or the like. Much more comfortable.

You DO know that happens automatically if you emerge anything GUI, yes?

It's been a while since I've used Gentoo, but I do know that in one of the config files (I think it was make.conf, NOT SURE) I didn't include some things and I couldn't emerge several things. Maybe it was something with my stage 1 install...I did a stage 3 the next time and didn't have the problem.


That's your choice. We aren't debating GUIs/desktop environments here. Gentoo's default KDE install isn't as bloated as say Mandrake's...


Yeah they are good too. The Knoppix thing would probably be a good idea, but I've never tried it. Never tried Knoppix in general.

Actually, I didn't know that. Has that always been the case with gentoo?
