Graal Virus?

1 Attachment(s)
I click on graal this morning and i get a norton antivirus message that deleted it because of a virus? i tried reinstalling and it still does it.

This is not real so do not panic. Quote from Stefan who posted below:

Quote:

It seems the latest update of Norton added something that is finding the Backdoor.Blarul signature inside the packager we use (to make the exe smaller etc.). It's not a new virus though, also the packager is older than the virus, so I guess it's just a unlucky match of the data in the packager that is matching the signature, but we are investigating. It's possible to turn off the automatic virus check when you click on something, or only disable it for the Graal.exe and Graal3.exe

Ok I have checked the web:
it seems starting today Norton also sees emule, edonkey, overnet as infected. This must be a bug in the Symantec virus database.

UPDATE
Run LiveUpdate of your Norton Antivirus, that will fix the problem. The bad virus signature will be removed then and Graal will work again

<3 this will get stefan to see it now since moonie murged mine with the one in the tech support. See no body really ever checks the tech support forum. Dont worry this is happening to everyone. Just keep graal deleted untill stefan explains/fixs.

Darlene159 02-24-2004 02:35 PM

Didn't realize it was in tech support, I will leave this one also for now...hopefully members will see it, and not start new threads.....

My Norton also deleted my Graal :(

thrashsoul 02-24-2004 02:37 PM

Rc works thought, I think everyone that can go on graal is probably infected and no antivirus

Ah well best to keep it deleted untill stefan gives us a good explanation and or fix :D.

WanDaMan 02-24-2004 02:45 PM

Some one deleated post, Well anyways. What the heck? can we still play graal or will we be doomed? :P

thrashsoul 02-24-2004 02:46 PM

you'll be doomed

Darlene159 02-24-2004 02:58 PM

I blocked Norton from checking the graal.exe, I certainly hope it is not a virus.
*Gets ready to format* :(

But like, if Norten picked it up it must have to be a backdoor?
I'm not turning off my firewall for this, for all I know you could be getting passwords on my computer.
I know you don't want to hear it, but how can we be sure?

skyler87 02-24-2004 03:26 PM

:o
Same thing's happening to me, and for some reason I can't seem to be able to reinstall graal.exe

When Norton detects it then it must have a signature of a virus, it is not necessary containing a virus.

WHIPENIE4 02-24-2004 03:28 PM

well my Nortons expired so either way im screwed. Sooooooooo.......................

Just because Norton detects something as a virus, doesnt necessarily mean it is a virus, in most cases it is, but not always

You have to set your antivirus so that it doesnt scan graal.exe and/or graal3.exe, otherwise when you try to re-install it, your virus program will delete it

Yes I remember that it detected some Graal level as virus some months ago

Yes you will need to disable the Norton automatic scan & deletion (You can still scan other files manually).

I dont recommend disabling Norton's auto scan and deletion, he should just go into options, and add graal.exe to the eclusion list

Security risk for it not to packed :)

thesaiyan 02-24-2004 04:57 PM

Hmm, weird, Graal works perfectly fine for me. Norton hasn't picked up anything yet. And I updated it like friday/saturday so its upto date.

WanDaMan 02-24-2004 05:21 PM

I'll check it with Sophos and see what comes up, I'll post back with a reply.
I'm relieved about this not being major.. :)

They added the bad virus signature yesterday (23rd). I am sure some companies will sue Symantec for this. That bad signature caused the deletion of several popular programs, and the producer of those programs get problems because their customers complain and the product is seen in a bad light.

*sigh*
Sad that people had to be told by Stefan himself. It's amazing how paranoid some people can be about a so called "virus". ...lmao

Umm no, how about it makes sense to be told by stefan himself, since it was his decision to add what is picked up as a Virus. He's the programmer, it is his responsibility to protect the validity of his creation.

Packing the product doesn't help much. Most of the people capable of finding whatever know how to anaylize it unpacked.

Admins 02-24-2004 07:55 PM

Well it doesn't happen often that Symantec makes such stupid errors. There are multi-billion-dollar- companies that use that packager for their products. It's actually a quite nice tool, you can bundle the exe with dlls and additional files. By doing that you have less files and the files are always of the good version. Also the exe is compressed and encrypted and gets some additional security.

Funny how the "validity" was only in question after JUST UPDATING to the new definitions. That itself wasn't enough of a hint to make you realize that there's nothing wrong with Graal? Yeah, Stefan was hiding a real backdoor in Graal the whole time, and Norton just now released definitions to detect it! Really, think about how stupid that is.

You guys seem to distrust Stefan so much... why in the world did you ever send in your money to upgrade your accounts? Why are you playing this game? He might hack you and steal your money!

HAHAHAHAH not really, dude. Just because the almighty stefan says that it isn't, doesn't mean that he is telling the truth. I'm by no means saying that he is lying to us, but still. Although the creator of a game we like to play and have all invested money into, it doesn't nullify the fact that stefan is still just some random guy on the internet that could just as easily be a paedophile, or kidnapper, or hacker, or virus maker as he is a kewl programmer guy who made graal. :(
And saying it is "sad" to get paranoid about possible viruses? That's pretty "sad" in itself, dude. Ever had a virus? It is most definitely NOT fun. People don't like getting viruses; they are worrying and harmful and a bloody nuisance! And if a huge, well known multinational corporation (as bloodsucking and evil as they all ar XD) like Norton says that there could be a virus here, i am more inclined to believe them than some coder from europe. Sorry stefan, i'm not accusing you of anything here (i mean, this game is your livelihood after all) but i think we are allowed to be at least paranoid here o_O

Again, I'll ask, what would he gain by doing something like this?

Btw, I have in fact had a virus. When I was an idiot to computers, I had one for around 6 months and could barely install anything. The virus added onto every exe and com file, corrupting most of them. Just because I had something like that before doesn't mean I'm going to be paranoid about EVERY SINGLE message that I get. Especially when it's so completely obvious that nothing is wrong in the first place. I have Norton set to not update definitions automatically. So, I went to update my definitions myself last night, and after it was done, boom! "Graal has a backdoor" I'm thinking "It does? Amazing how it just happened to pick it up now and not before." Sure, Stefan could have made his own sort of backdoor that Norton just now released something to detect, but again, WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD HE DO IT? It's so pointless to even debate this. You guys have already shown your distrust for him, why are you downloading any future verisons? He'll put virii and backdoors in them!

Your friends might get a couple of random IMs now... not from me though. I'll hold over on updating until there's a fix. I've had a history with viruses. My first 2 computers got hit and destroyed by the chernobyl virus, that was the first virus that ever affected me. Then there was an AOL Password theif that was emailed to me through a friend and I was too stupid not to recognize it as a virus because I was eight. Took a while to get the virus update for it because the password theif thing got on our accounts. Then a couple of weeks ago I got two viruses in my email from a mailer-daemon address, The first one I didn't touch because it smelt fishy, and then came a second one after I updated virus defs that it caught so I had it delete the other one, too. Then my mom bought a new antivirus and it detected a virus called antivirus.exe (on her computer)... I don't know what that did. Oh well.

Stefan, when you sue them and get money, can you give everyone Gold access like you did after New Year's? That would be nice... I think I was just figuring out how to play it right this weekend... But, not quite enough to want to upgrade my account, you know?

protagonist 02-24-2004 08:54 PM

It is not invalid to worry about these sort of occurences. As Stefan said, Symantec does not often make these mistakes.

Yes, well, this is why i did add that i wasn't accusing stefan of doing this. And besides, when have you ever known an internet paedophile say to a child "I rape children. Want to meet me irl?".

And the last question in that quote's a bit pointless, if you ask me. What does -any- hacker and virus programmer do the things they do for? Don't ask me, but they're still doing it =/

Would reinstalling it fix the problem of "hi we're going to sit on the loading screen and do nothing?"

zell12 02-24-2004 11:52 PM

You can all just drop this now. Symantec has released a New Virus Definitions list. If you have a new version of System Works/Norton you can just undelete what Norton mistakingly deleted.
