Screenshot Evidence

I think that there should be a way to take a whole screenshot of the entire screen for evidence like if someone was hacking and then a ton of water marks are added through out the entire image to proove that it is a real unedited screenshot

Nice idea, but if people have the right tools, its still very easy to forge. Photoshop anyone? Its easier if people know about the person(s) involved in whatever incident. Most people, I would like to assume, are smart enough to know when a posted screenshot is wrong based upon the accused's behavior and integrity. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if its real or just another boy crying wolf.

Perhaps a watermark and a new filetype(does this cost money?)? It would still be possible to forge the screenshots, but it would require a program to do so...

Changing the extension won't do much unless its a new file format all together. But what would be the point? Someone would eventually crack whatever protection there may be. Nothing is perfect. You'll just have to use your better judgement to make decisions unless that's not your strong suit.

Best idea, a screenshot in a new file format that can only be viewed through some viewer thing in RC and when you're logged on RC.

zell12 02-10-2004 10:28 PM

I think that would be impossible I would think, to make it so only one program can open that file type. Someone with some C++ knowledge can just make a program to read the file, right?

MagicalTux 02-11-2004 11:24 AM

And why not an encrypted screenshot transmitted directly to the abuse team through the game protocol that is directly handled by the game engine ? :)

(°° )

zell12 02-11-2004 01:33 PM

Because then people would hax0r the system and send trojans directly to Unixmad. :)

R0bin 02-11-2004 01:58 PM

Shhhh ;)

Cracking an encrypted thing if you don't know the process is possible but it consumes a LOT of time... and there are other languages besides C/++ :P

Loriel 02-11-2004 02:33 PM

I suggest serverside screenshots.

There is a serverside command "makescreenshot" but it saves on the client's computer... perhaps we could get stefan to hack it

I told you not to let the plans out!

Unixmad would take that as a threat ;)

Still, it would be a lot more efficient. Tux's idea of encrypted straight to RC isn't too bad, as long as it's in a file instead of popping up. Then we could add another law to Graal, no abusing/overusing the hacker screenshots reporting thingy!

Kappa00p2p 02-12-2004 09:54 PM

But if a group of people (say 10-20) got on and constantly sent the images to the rc.. everyones rc would crash and they wouldnt be able to find out who sent them unless the server would log their accounts (and possibly crash?). Also trial attacks towards playerworlds would be more damaging to graal than trainers unless trials couldn't send these types of screenshots.

Maybe each server that wanted a watermark could get their own custom one that would be uploaded by a global admin. When the player pesses the button for the screenshot the client would call for the watermark to be added to screenshot on the fly. Then the image would be added to the clients computer. Also the watermarks would be changed monthly to prevent the forging of watermarks and to make forging more harder the watermarks should cover just about the entire screen with text aswell as images and some unnoticeable (sp?) parts that only staff could know about?

Maybe if it would send only player info (like coords, accounts, etc)?
In general, though, you're right about the sending directly to RC. Big hazard. I like the idea of only readable through RC, though. (I love topics where you can be completely irrational)
