Never mind never mind. My graphic's dude alarid made an animated gif called plant.gif. This server has an image on it called plant.gif which is different then the one alarid made so it showed up as the one alarid made when in reality it was not. Sorry sorry.

Make sure before you start pointing fingers it is indeed what you say, it pays to check it out thoughly before you make yourself look silly.;)

There was a thread about it in the future improvment forums, and I said that. Apparently the patent on '.gif' is no longer in effect. EITHER WAY, still use mng for better quality. :]

Was never illegal to use >.<. The encoding format was patented so programs that MADE gifs were "illegal" without permission, Atleast thats the way it was explained to me

zell12 11-14-2003 02:39 AM

So was it illegal to convert images to .gif or use images in .gif format?

Quoth burnallgifs.org
20 June 2003: The LZW patent expires today in the United States. However, patents on LZW are still in force in other countries. In mail dated Monday, 23 June 2003, Unisys attorney Mark Starr asserts that LZW patents are still in force in Canada, France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
I do not think it is inherently illegal to use the GIF format, but I do think that its use is to be discouraged.

That's why you should put your servername in front of your graphics... or something similar:

Sanstrata_plant-1.gif

zell12 11-14-2003 03:03 AM

Any custom graphics by servers should rename them.

sage_scooby 11-14-2003 05:01 AM

Agreed, all GFX on servers should include a playername or server name to identify it. It would make things easier on a lot of people.

zell12 11-14-2003 05:40 AM

I hope Spark does this, because when I told Nem last year, he said it wasn't nessary.

Thought 11-14-2003 07:19 AM

I believe the LZW (LWZ? I keep mixing it up) patent caused it so that any commercial usage of .gif format (not just creation) which used the encoding incurs royalties which must be paid.

To be on the safe side (since the patent has not expired yet in many countries non-US), use .mng.

It has expired in the United States though.

Just a thought - aren't threads like this not supposed to be created in the first place?

And besides, both Spark and I are readily contactable, it's unnecessary even if it's allowed.

Forum PM? Email? Wait till Spark is on AIM?
It didnt have to be put here, and it doesn't matter whether Houdiman likes you or not, it shouldn't interfere with his job.....

Damnit, the urge wins. :( I refrain from going to a certain 'admin' as last time I asked for assistance with a problem, they threatened to reset the people involved plus being very rude about it, I won't mention names, but just think about it.
