True that. It seems as the development side of Graal as a whole has a giant bite taken out of it... Alot of the old talented people are gone(quit) or missing... (We're still looking for Spencer on 2k1 @_@; ) The 'newbies' don't want to take the time to learn something new.

Kaimetsu 11-11-2003 06:28 AM

Big loss. Graal needs quality, not quantity.

There needs to be a balanced mix of both. It's great to have flawless levels, utterly efficent scripts, and gorgeous graphics, but it's kind of pointless if you are only getting those once in a blue moon. We're having the same problem on 2k1... Apparently we have the quality thing down, we're just missing the quantity part.

GFX shouldnt be hard to find though XD

I'm not talking about the work that's produced, I'm talking about the developers.

Anyway, bad developers produce bad work. If it is to progress, Graal needs good work to put into its flagship worlds. The little playerworlds don't really matter as much.

Ah, ok. Well, then we not only have to worry about good work, but good work ethic and the like... I believe one of the problems is that there are so many playerworlds. Stefan just basicly lets any Joe-Schmo get rent a playerworld... I don't blame him though, cash is cash.

Scripters are sooo much harder to find then Level builders. Level builders will flock if you put a nice public showcase out there.

There's a difference between "level makers" and what I call "level artists". The content has to be appealling to the eye as well as fuctional. It's part of the whole package.

True. But there is also a difference between decent and great scripters. People can know how to use chipset's outside of graal, but there are many commands on GScript you must learn by studying it. Therefore it is nearly impossible to find outside-of-graal people to help.

Learning the commands really isnt the hard part, it's being able to use them logically to accomplish something. GScript is similar to C++ apparently. So, if you can script in C++, I doubt it will take long to master GScript... But that's just me talking. I can't script worth squat.

Like it's been said. They're all of short supply.

davidpsy 11-12-2003 05:40 AM

Umm scripters are not that rare I got like lets see *counts out of the 7 staff he has* I got like 3 scripters all pretty good and then 1 super scripter named Robin. I didn't know they were so rare lol.

It all depends on the standards you're willing to keep.

I just counted them and got 123 playerworlds. Of course, That is give or take 1 or 2. So between 121 and 125.

Agreed you can actually count the current "level artist" on one hand. I mean people that are really good and still play or work on Graal. There used to be many but with lots of people quitting because of money and quitting because Graal sucks there has been a damper put on with the whole developing faze.

There are more 'good' scripters then there are 'good' level makers. I know Kai will probably disagree because he thinks there is maybe 2-3 good scripters but honestly there is alot of people out there who can do very enhanced scripts. Not many people can make a really nice level.

You're not exactly qualified to judge scripters. On the other hand, everybody's qualified to judge levels :)

Why the **** can't I judge scripting ol' scripting god? If I go to use a weapon, a door or whatever the hell it may be if something wrong happens I know that hey that guy either can't script and/or has an error in his script. Im pretty sure thats judging a script. You can't judge it any better then me. You can't go on a server and use a weapon and see it works and tell if it was scripted in correct form or if someone through it together.

There are more scripters that are good then level makers.

Because you don't know the first thing about it. You can't judge the difficulty of a given task, so you can't say how good a person needs to be in order to complete it.

Get a clue, man. That's entirely subjective.

Excuse me but I have scripted before. I have scripted many things actually. Just because I am not as good as you doesn't mean I don't know anything about scripting. I have scripted many things that range from a Graphical User Interface that had some great features such as a new Q-Menu with many effects to an auto grassing script that I use in the editor. I also made the GFX for the GUI but I guess I can't judge GFX because im not as good as Zen right?

Okay, so you know a little. That doesn't change things. You're still insufficiently skilled to properly judge the difficulty involved in producing advanced scripts, and thus incapable of deciding how competent a person must be, based on his creations.

That depends. You can judge the quality of graphics quite easily, because their very purpose is to be visually impressive. If somebody makes an impressive image, they've succeeded in their task.

Scripts are different. They don't have to be impressive in order to be difficult, and impressive scripts are often easy, or riddled with bad logic. You can't judge them without understanding them. Everybody understands graphics, few understand scripts.

Nitkizi 11-12-2003 07:30 AM

Actually..with graphics..it's up to personal taste. A lot of people here go into technical stand-points around here, while others look at the artistical value. Blookat's drawings, for example, I appreciate his work, while others don't like his technique and style.

Basically, not everyone is going like that one certain piece of work even if it is visually impressive, you determine how visually impressive it is in your own eyes.

With scripting, the way I see it is..you either know it or you don't. And if you know it, how good you are depends on how efficient you can make it.

Of course, but I can see that a lot of skill went into producing the Mona Lisa, even though it doesn't interest me at all.

It's not anywhere near that simple.

davidpsy 11-12-2003 07:44 AM

Anyone can judge the end peice of a script as in what the script does, but few can judge the code it self and weather it's code was done well and the right commands were used or weather it was done poor and there would be better commands to be used.

syltburk 11-12-2003 12:39 PM

In my oppinion there isnt hard to find anybody witha good level style, but its hard to find anybody who actually work.
