Speaking to the Experts

I just wanna make a speech to those who think I lie about how I script and my skill at it. One day... I was searching for a good online RPG to play, and graal caught my eye. I was totally hooked on it and downloaded almost instantly. One of the big reasons was because you could make your own levels, people, and weapons. I aoutomatically started scripting... doing simple stuff like a 4-way bow, and fun explosion stuff... I learned about variables and flags... and I want to say that I'm not perfect. No one is. I script, and I'm happy. I go to these forums and I ask questions. I am still learning, and so is everyone else, no matter how good you are or think you are. So please... do not judge me by what I don't know, but by what I do know. I was new once, and so were all of you. You asked questions, and you got answers. I want to say that I want answers too. Kaimetsu is one of the greatest guys I've met. Not just his ability to script, but his knowledge and meaning for it. I want to become a great scripter, and I hope you will help me on the journey there.

It means :). It does not mean :( or . ;)

Working towards self-improvement's a good want, and I wish you good luck in learning more scripting. :)

LOL, that twas funny.
Idrox0, good luck! How good are you as of now?

Idrox0 11-02-2003 07:25 AM

Well, I'm not going to use "pretty good", as that would confuse you :D! But I am an adequate scripter, and I currently know slightly advanced string storage and access, as I have learned that variables do not stay the same value when reconnecting. I don't want to work for a server, but I would like to know the "basics" of clientside/serverside so that if I am ever needed, I will be of good assistance. I have and idea... give me 3 ideas of scripts, each at a different level of scripting, and I will tell you if I could script it.

easy: drawing tool w/ atleast half the cabability of ms paint
medium: a window component with the basic functions (resize, maximize, minimize)
hard: AI for an archer baddy

not sure if this will accurately display your abilities though...

Idrox0 11-02-2003 08:03 AM

Ok, this is the wierdest thing...
Easy:Forget it
Medium:Forget it
Hard:What kind of AI?

The problem is that each could be more difficult than any other, depending on the standards you maintain and features you add. And I'd say 'Easy' should be something that an average newbie can manage. Yours is too difficult :-p

I guess just like the basic functions that the built-in one has, I was thinking about if you were to use the shoot command that you would need some sort of extra knowledge to be able to calculate the values needed to hit a specific position actually

Really? I know a certain kitty which will tell you otherwise.

Heh well good luck. Don't ask trivial questions to kai though and don't call him paranoid because he sorta might not be very happy or so.

osrs 11-03-2003 01:08 AM

Good luck, hope you get a pretty good scripter soon. :)

That certain kitty will tell me that my own opinion is wrong?

Clarification:

1) By 'trivial' I was referring to things that you could find out just by looking in newfeatures.txt/experimenting a little.
2) That's primarily when I'm away. I don't like having to leave my game just to tell somebody the x and y offsets for the player's centre.

It's okay to use it if you know what it means.

Can someone tell me how people become GST? I am soo curious to see how that's taken care of.

You don't. We aren't hiring. If we need another person we ask someone we all vote on. People who ask most likely wont even be considered to be asked, if that time ever comes.

I'd like to add that most people out there are unfit to be on the team, and don't even understand what it does.

ForgottenLegacy 11-03-2003 08:21 AM

I never said I wanted to be a GST. In fact, the thought of having an rc on serveral servers is somthing that I would not really like. I am just wondering how you people hire, out of curiosity.

There isn't a 'tryout' for become GST, the team was formed with scripters of Graal Kingdoms.

Too bad some people think of the word different. Or maybe we misinterpreted eachother wrong :/ Even though i'm quite sure i used it right.

Yes, what Kaimetsu said is exactly true. I would consider the windows to be easiest, then the AI, and finally, the drawing features. I consider the drawing script to be the hardest as it needs to check for images, tiles, or whatever you use to make the script, in order to do a simple fill (putting into assumption that once you have a closed polygon, fill only changes the color within the polygon).

AI for an archer baddy is not hard :)

actually it's quite simple o_O

TheStivi 11-05-2003 08:55 AM

i created one 2 months ago.
the ai lifts bushes and stones and throw it on you then he go back and defense then he attack you with bow :) then he walk und jump on you and hit you with sword (the action is random) :)
I liked it.
but i deleted it :(

depends on how good it is ;)

like I said before, I was thinking about using shoot and having a good enough understanding of simple physics to incorporate an aiming capability into the npc (i.e. if the player is running away, they npc could possible hit the player) but alas, I wasn't very specific cause it was too late in the night for me to think, or goto bed

Wouldn't you just use classes for the NPC's?
