Word Filter

1 Attachment(s)
We have added a new thing to the game server to allow the filtering of words, so that players cannot use rude words in their nick names, chat, PMs or toalls.
The admins of each server can change the rules by editing wordfilter/rules.txt , it logs the usage of filtered words into wordfilter/log.txt.
To enable the word filter you will need to restart the server with the control panel, the older playerworlds have already been restarted, tell me if your server has not been restarted yet.

I have attached a file that explains how to use the word filter.

This features has been added because several servers have already started to script something like this, to keep the gaming atmosphere. This new word filter also works for nick names and PMs.

Cool. :)

It's too bad I already have a profanity system, or I'd use this one. :p

Spark910 10-23-2003 06:30 PM

I was looking for this yesterday after you said. Oh well a very useful thing :D

DarkVillian 10-23-2003 06:36 PM

nice. :)

I don't see why that means you won't use it. It's far superior to anything that could be scripted (assuming you don't want to overload the client/server).

I thought the same, but didn't want a mouth full of dirt if I got something wrong.

Lol. More like a mouth full of non-profanitized words

It's ok, the only one whose mouth is/will be full of dirt is Konidias. He's foolish if he thinks his profanity system will cover PMs and toalls, as the NPCServer has no domain there. :p

konidias 10-24-2003 12:43 AM

Um no guys, chill out. I didn't mean that mine was better or something. I was just stating that mine does what it is supposed to do, and that's all I need.

My profanity script doesn't even filter words. It only logs profanity ingame, for evidence, so that people can be punished for it later. It's a discreet thing...

Mustang1988 10-24-2003 12:52 AM

It could be inferred from what you said. Perhaps being more clear next time would benefit you.

But the profanity in PMs/toalls is unimportant? :P

Great, now we can finally implement pointless, annoying and silly censorship not only in the forums but also in game. What an achievement.

OOO maybe I can censor words like it and the mauhaha I'm ebil!! ;)

Seeing as though I'm tired, it's all very confusing. At the moment I'm testing it on N-Pulse, and adding .'s also record what the player has said, though if you change one of the settings, it doesn't. If you wanted to block out "ho" and make it focus on everything that is said, it would warn them for "how","hola", etc. X_o

Kaimetsu 10-24-2003 06:33 PM

Usually the filter won't be fooled by adding characters etc, because it uses a flexible matching system. Hence the 'PRECISION' argument.

konidias 10-24-2003 07:21 PM

Um, whoever deleted some of the posts here, you forgot the post made by Tseng (Lance):

"It could be inferred from what you said. Perhaps being more clear next time would benefit you."

He's basically insulting me because I wasn't clear enough for him, which in turn made him look like an ass for assuming something. I think it was uncalled for. :/

I’m sure you'll agree the other posts were far more directly insulting people. While the comment could have been maybe said in a less snappy way, it doesn't hold much of a source for an argument or flaming towards you. Just suggesting adding something to your previous post, instead of hoping the reader will assume it.

How is that insulting? I gave you a bit of constructive criticism. If you don't want people pointing out something arrogant which can be inferred from your words, you should be more clear. Your words might have had some validity if I was the only one who inferred that - however, I was not alone. :)

I wasn't asking for constructive criticism. You just decided to be a jerk and get on my case over something that you misunderstood.

Can you ever NOT be a jerk towards me? I don't think it's happened yet. It's like you have a personal grudge or vendetta against me. I wish you'd just leave me the hell alone. It's not my job to make things clear for you, so that you can understand it and not look foolish replying to my post. It's your choice to post such an ignorant opinion on my post without knowing what I'm talking about.

You should have told me to be more clear in the first place, instead of getting on your high horse and deciding to point out all of my supposed flaws. You big jerk.

Um, there's no misunderstanding. I caught an inference which you hadn't intended to imply. So did several other people. Whose fault is that? You say mine, I say yours. Regardless of whose fault it was, had you made your sentence more clear, it wouldn't have happened.

Quote:

Can you ever NOT be a jerk towards me?
Please don't think that you're so important in my eyes that I should go out of my way to 'be a jerk towards you' - that is not the case. You make a lot of errors in logic (for example, insulting my Managerial skill for having delayed 2k1's opening since we had to recreate some work in the bomy-boots. Your basis for the insult was that you had some backups, and when you posted your screenshot, they were from even earlier than the backups we were working from.), and I will occasionally point them out.

Quote:

I don't think it's happened yet. It's like you have a personal grudge or vendetta against me.
Again, I am not going to waste my time on some foolish grudge/agenda. My time is more important than you. :)

Quote:

I wish you'd just leave me the hell alone.
I wish you would make your opinion, intention, expression, whatever you want to call it, clear, so it doesn't seem like you're being your normal, arrogant self.

Quote:

It's not my job to make things clear for you, so that you can understand it and not look foolish replying to my post.
It's your job to make your own statements sufficiently clear so that people can understand them. On top of that, my statement had an 'if' in there - if you want to argue that I assumed something to be true, I'd like to point out that the existence of that 'if' makes that entire post not-applicable if the condition is false.

(And, I didn't look foolish, except maybe in your perception of the world where you are always right, and everyone else has merely forgotten to do something or is incorrect)

Quote:

It's your choice to post such an ignorant opinion on my post without knowing what I'm talking about.
It was my choice to post what I did, and I stand behind what I said. Perhaps you did mean it, perhaps you didn't. Either way, I really don't care. It's not like my life, future, and happiness depend on whether or not you are as arrogant as you've been in the past.

Quote:

You should have told me to be more clear in the first place, instead of getting on your high horse and deciding to point out all of my supposed flaws. You big jerk.
Hey, I thought a phrase someone else said was fitting to the case at hand, so I inserted it before the rest of my post. Keep in mind the rest of that original post was an 'if'.

I pointed out no supposed flaws until you said that some people (obviously including myself as well as others who agreed with me) could be such jerks, and I pointed out that you were included in that statement as well.

Perhaps your internal chronometer's off, as you seem to have the order of the posts mixed up.

And, you still haven't answered my question. How was saying 'Perhaps being more clear next time would benefit you' a deletion-worthy insult?

Thallen 10-24-2003 10:02 PM

Hmm...I hope this isn't overused, this game is for ages 13 and up, and I think these ages can handle a certain amount of cursing...

Thought 10-24-2003 10:29 PM

Is there a possiblity of a 'deny' action?

I am hoping to use this to block <script> in PMs (people use it to crash...)

Cursing/swearing lowers the quality of any server, cursing/swearing is also not required for daily activity on any server, so I hope it is overused :)

Again you turn this into an arguement about how full of myself I am. Can't you stay on the subject at hand, instead of trying to accuse me of being bigheaded and arrogant, just because you think it's true?

(And, I didn't look foolish, except maybe in your perception of the world where you are always right, and everyone else has merely forgotten to do something or is incorrect)

Oh look, a hypocrit. You're being arrogant by telling me that you weren't looking foolish, because only in my eyes am I ever going to be right, and you're always the winner. What does that make you? Arrogant.

It's not like my life, future, and happiness depend on whether or not you are as arrogant as you've been in the past.

Then why did you even bother replying to my post in the first place. I could care less about you and I wish you'd leave me alone and show me you can do the same.

And, you still haven't answered my question. How was saying 'Perhaps being more clear next time would benefit you' a deletion-worthy insult?

Because you posted before that in an arrogant manner, and then you followed it up with this. If you can't see that you're acting like a total ass in this thread, then you should probably step back and look twice.

Um, there's no misunderstanding. I caught an inference which you hadn't intended to imply. So did several other people.

But unlike the others, you decided to be a jerk about it. Also, when one person replies that they notice something, everyone else is going to see that reply and also "notice" it. It's likely that some of those people wouldn't have even noticed it if weren't for it being pointed out, so your arguement of "oh look at all the people on my side" is retarded, much like yourself.

Again, I am not going to waste my time on some foolish grudge/agenda. My time is more important than you. :)

Again you're just being an ass. I'd also like to point out some more hypocrisy, which you so generously provide. You say your time is more important than me, so why are you taking your time and quoting every sentence I make?

So you perceive me as having been a jerk towards you. Big deal - should I be banned for being insensitive to you? Sorry, buddy, but you're not that important. Should Emily be banned because people don't like her? Of course not. Should she excessively violate forum rules, that's a different story. However, such is not the case, and thus it is neither applicable nor relevant to this case.

Um, you're the one who keeps putting it on a side thing. I asked a simple question - how was my original, constructive criticism post, deletion-worthy? You've yet to give me adequate reason, even in the remainder of your post.

Quote:

So what if I am arrogant? I don't expect people to bend the rules for me just because I happen to think highly of myself, which you appear to think should be the case for you.

Quote:

This might be a hard concept for you to grasp, but it's because I am correct.

And this makes it deletion-worthy? Sorry buddy, but that's not how the rules work. You of all people should know this, having been an administrator of these forums.

Quote:

Actually, I just pointed it out. I'm sorry if you consider anyone who points out a flaw of yours to be a jerk.

Sorry, buddy. I'm a lot of things, but I'm not retarded. :)

And, it's not as though other people couldn't come to the same conclusion on their own - it wasn't a very difficult one to reach.

Being an ass? I'm pointing out your flaws in logic. Does that make me an ass? I don't think so. One might even say that I'm attempting to open people's minds to the possibility that maybe, just maybe, they're wrong. To the one on the receiving end (you), I may seem like an ass, but then again, that'd just be becuase someone dared to question your omniscience.

Sorry, buddy, but there's no hypocrisy involved. It's not like you not particularly mattering to me and me replying to you are mutually contradictory - I can reply to you without particularly caring about your thoughts and feelings. It's called apathy, in case you've never heard of it.

Quote:

Oh look, I can be an ass and smile like I'm better than you too. :)
Wow, even my smilie usage amounts to being an ass. It would seem that perhaps anything that anyone says in disagreement with you makes them an ass, even if it's just a smile. Ah, well. Somehow I'll manage to wake up in the morning. :)

How 'late' I am when I'm posting in a thread is irrelevant to what I'm implying in the post. I could be as far behind in a thread as I can and my opinion wouldn't be affected, especially if it hasn't already been pointed out.

Ok everyone, stop fighting, and back to the topic of Word Filter.
I've tried it on a server and it seems to lag the server and sometimes it will show the word for a few seconds before covering it up. Any comments?

Arguable. If you had something new to point out, as you thought you did, then that might be the case. However, your argument rests on an assumption which is currently up for debate - had you posted it earlier, it might have contained some more validity.

If a certain amount of arguably intelligent people were able to infer a certain thing from his statement, and if it happened that he did not mean to imply that, then there's sufficient reason to believe that his message was indeed unclear, and not "obviously clear" as you would have the rest of us believe.

I bet Stefan gets highly annoyed by having his threads constantly filled up with useless posting. Anyway.....

We tried out the word filter on Classic and couldn't get it to work. Stefan, I know you restarted our server, but it still doesn't appear to work. We've followed the rules in the document exactly as they're stated. Any ideas? :(

But this is not the case. You're referring to a situation that does not exist. What has happend is what matters. And in that case, falsely accusing someone of their post simply because you cannot interpret what that person is trying to say would not be deemed 'intelligent' nor would arguing about something as rediculous as that. I reread the post, and I try to think of how you're interpreting his message, and I can see where you're comming from, but all I get from doing so is the belief of false accusation. Let's take a second look at the post:
Quote:

What is not clear in this message? He's declaring that he has a profanity system. He's declaring that if he didn't already have one, then he would use the other one. Where you're getting the assumption that he's saying that his profanity system is superior to the other one is beyond me, but I see no false interpratation that could come from solely this post other than from past conflicts.

I don't think that it will lag except you pot tons of rules there...
If you type some text then you see it normal for some seconds, but the server will replace it and send the new versions back to you, as well as to the other players.

Add this to the folder configuration: file wordfilter/*
Add this to your rights: rw wordfilter/*
Add this to wordfilter/: rules.txt (note: You should upload the default one (provided by stefan) and edit/add)

After the first person swears log.txt will "magically" appear.

This has worked for everyone that has asked me.
