Wands!

There should be wands with Abilities. for ex.

Thunder Wand (Pow+2) (Attuned:Thunder) u know the wands are boring

--Chris-- 10-07-2003 05:36 AM

No, that's stupid and too advantageous. Wands aren't boring, there's pre-defined spells in some...some are heavy which allows you to cast more of a pre-defined spell, others are limited in charges to pre-defined spells, others are plain...some are kingdom specific. Enough said

Satrek2000 10-07-2003 08:34 AM

And just that something doesn't go boom at every possible occasion doesn't mean it's boring in any way. Also, wands can't have attributes as they are concidered clothing by the script.

Unless there are more events (where spellcasters stand a chance), there shouldn't be any event wands - which would turn out to be 'really heavy rods' or something. Wands can't hold atributes as they are concidered cothes, and rods don't make you stronger, just give you an amount of charges.

That would make a lot of sense. Since wands are used as a focus for spells... there SHOULD be wands that focus better in some areas.
But... right now the spell system is so screwed up it doesn't matter anyway.

Hm... maybe there could be a way to add (balanced) atributes to wands... don't know whether it would work: have a script check whether someone has a certain wand, say a skeleton wand (i.e. bone), which then in turn gives the player the fitting atributes (attuned: death, repelled: protection), maybe through a hitten item... it should be restricted to one wand of such a kind, and only applied when it's wielded. I can think of some wands befitting the god's attributes, and then maybe some designed for elemental mages or such. It would be enough if they gave attuned and repelled paths, resistances would work, too. I don't think a wand should enhance your stats though, i.e. a wand may like to fire fire, but it doesn't make you smarter or stronger.

In my graal folders where can i find the wand gfx anyone?

You're Archmage Aedwin Sparklestraek of Dustari...
Anyways, i know this has been mentioned before, and it isn't possible in the system. But, if weapons etc. are blessable, then why shouldn't wands be? I mean, you even can enchant your armour :\ Make your wands prepareable with some maximum, and you can use pow+ magic+ and spelldamage+ scrolls...

Satrek2000 11-05-2003 01:53 AM

I don't like the idea... since it would allow a "barbarian" to cast stronger spells than a proper mage. I know, the actual strength has nothing to do with rping, but the strength of a spell should only depend on the caster and maybe some items. I don't see preparing work for wands. What I do think of as possible would be wands with attuned and repelled, maybe even as artifacts from the gods (bile: attuned: death, wounding, repelled fire, restoration - or whatever).
Wands which have a little effect are okay, but the whole improving thing would be too strong IMHO. It would be okay if the only thing to change was the time it takes to cast, but I rather think this should be reduced for everyone.

graaliholic 11-05-2003 03:04 AM

I don't think sorcerers/priests would mind losing the ability to prep/improve weapons if they could prep/improve/charge wands ;)

Satrek2000 11-05-2003 11:12 AM

Which, in my opinion, would make things worse... I started as a warrior, but now I'm a mage, and there can certainly be sorcerers who feel like becoming soilders. But this isn't about class problems. As it is now, fighters can slaughter spellcasters any day. I have a prepared weapon which certainly cannot keep up with a dedicated barbarian, but it comes in handy in close combat with monsters and as a means of defense, where spells wouldn't be as effective - or not working at all. On the other hand, I still don't see the need to prepare a wand - spellcasting times should be lowered in general or according to the caster's level. The strength of a spell goes with his/her level, and the need for more diamonds and scrolls would only screw the slope even more - where only strong players have the means to become stronger and stronger.
Repells and attuneds, though, would do fine - maybe even on a custom wand with two slots to use a repelled-scroll and an attuned-scroll on.
