Because of recent computer problems (see NGRT forums) my hard drive is out and because of this, I am unable to access my current levels and graphics. What I have online is old and out-dated and is of no use to me. I'm not sure when I will be able to send my hard drive somewhere to get it recovered and put on a new one so it could be a while.

I appologize to anyone who has been waiting patiently :( It sucks so bad because I want to work on my playerworld so bad, yet, I have nothing to work with.

This does not mean I'm quitting, so forget it if you though I was:p I have no intentions what so ever on discontinuing my project and I don't plan on it in the near future. How and when I get the funds to have the data on my HD recovered I do not know. But I promise that when I have all of my files back I'll be working as hard as I can to get things done and hopefully I'll have people who can help with that. I can't promise it will be done overnight or within a month from that point, however.

Aw man... that really sucks. What exactly was the problem with your HD, and what type was it, and the size?

For more information, check out my threads in the NGRT Forums. But to save you some time and to be blunt, its been shorted out. This is because my video card shorted out and since they were on the same line coming from the power supply, my HD was affected.

Its an 80gb HD but only about half is used. It will cost me about $800 or more since I need to buy a new hard drive and see if I can actually recover the data that will be put on the new HD. It wouldn't be too much of a problem except I have a loan that I have to take care of :x But we'll see. I've not sat down with my mom yet and discussed a budget plan that will get the loan paid off fast. Until that gets all worked out, I can't exactly spend my money.

not to be rude man, but when since did it cost $700 dollars for a HDD (and if you think i'm being a jackass, just explain it, I didn't act stupid intentionally)

For the data recovery, it will most likely cost me that much.

I read an article about that... like a year ago, and it was only 400 USD so I would think it went down. and you can learn to do it yourself (it's not hard, as I understood)

This is merely out of curiosity (I feel sorry for your loss), but...why would you not keep the most up-to-date version of your server online?

There was an article in PCWorld that had some pretty kinky ways of temporarily recovering a HDD (mostly more than enough time to move it to another one.)

One method involved putting the Harddrive in a ziplock bag and putting it in a freezer.

That's not a reason, that's an excuse. It doesn't take _that_ long to upload changes.

No, but if you were 56k, why suffer wait times when you're working on things, when you can work on everything, instantly?

Because working with things online is far, far superior to working with them offline?

And, because there are no guarantees that something bad won't happen to my computer?

*shrug* Same thing could happen to the server.

Considering that I have an overworld of 2048 levels that range from the smallest filesize a level can be to almost the upload limit, plus my images which have to fit in that size range. Yeah, I have a pretty damn good excuse :rolleyes: Because I don't exactly allow players to go anywhere on my server there is no point in updating everything every time I make changes offline.

That and I have better security on my HD. This is not to say that I just give RC to whom ever, just that I'd rather not throw caution to the wind.

And you upload all 2048 levels and graphics each time you make one update? Cmon, you're smarter than that. :p

What's the point of having your own development server then, if you won't use it to test what you're doing? Sounds like a waste of space to me.

Uh, how does this go with what I said? The point was that your HD is not the most reliable place to keep things - as circumstances only served to prove. :)

CD backups are also very useful, though you have to treat them like royalty or you may screw 'em up...

Isn't DK like... always on hold? With only one person working on it, it's pretty much on hold whenever you don't work on it for short periods of time.

I thought it was the same deal with Oasi.... Oh wait... You're just the only one with an RC, not the only one working..

I agree, no offense to Yoshi, but I doubt DK is ever gonna be finished to a point where it will go public.

When you get it fixed heres an idea *simple idea*

Do like i have been doing every month zip your entire graal directory and burn it then lablel / date it and put it somewhere it can't be eaten
It doesn't take too long and it should all fit on one disk
Just try not to be like me and include stupid things like the heads folder and the weblevels folder lolz :)

I can understand why he wouldnt keep some things especially when you have globals who think they can do what ever they want and you dont want them messing with your stuff. (not going to go into any details or name names) Personally I keep a back up on 3 computers.. work, home, Giltwists. I could keep a back up on my mom's computer but I dont think its necessary. But even then I keep most things on the server. Like levels minus the tile sets and gmaps no gui's etc or other graphics of that nature etc.. Graal RC really isnt that secure. Sure you have less of a chance of losing stuff. But thats only if you dont mind putting up with people using there attributes to warpthemselves around and stuff among other things.

I usually backup on website servers. As well as hard-drive, cd, another computer and a friend.

Website servers? How much space do you have, and how much do you pay -- and is it really more secure?

Uhm, no offense... but Tseng is completly right.
Not to flame you or anything.. but...

You're PC is definitly not as secure as what the servers are being run on/from.
And to have an online playerworld, and not use the space? That's just stupid -- why pay for it until you will use it?

Who cares if your using 56k, all you're scripts should be done online, and using the server for your levels would be alot more organized? If you had 2000+ levels, you would only need to upload them ALL at once, one time. After then, just a few at a time...

Hmm, well this is unfortunate I wish you luck on your situation.

I don't always rememer what I've worked on sometimes. And, yes, I do test things out online but that is usually for particular scripts that I want to make sure work online (non-clientside things). And I do keep my computer rather secure. How I do it is my business :p

I know I don't post a lot of updates and things. Even though I want to create an interest, I try to stay in the background. Mostly so I can surprise people when I'm ready and to at least maintain some origionality. I honestly wasn't doing too bad as far as level development is concerned. I was moving rather quick at getting things filled in. Of course, that has come to an abrupt halt because of my computer. I try to get people to help me, but it quickly fizzles out within a few days of me hiring someone. I'm a bit jealous of a few people because they are good at finding/getting good people to help out. But sometimes life's just like that.

If/when I am able to get all my data back, I'll try to put some effort into getting some things done that I don't have done yet that I want done before I open. I don't have a lot of scripts left to do. I have a small EXP script set up but I've not been too successful at getting my damage scripts to work right. That and I need to script the tech system yet as well as a few other things :) Those are really the only major things that keep me from allowing players in aside from graphics.

Guess not, anyone can download your stuff and take your best graphic etc.
