Graalympus SERVER IS MESSED UP!!!

Ok I know this is in the wrong forum but I consider this important because I hear a lot of people complaining. Something on the server is causing it to lag drastically for almost everyone. THe server has caused my isp to crash 4 times now cause it is sending out way to much information!!! This really pisses me off to being I want to watch the games.

voicedcow6666 08-04-2003 10:23 PM

heh, I doubt it crashed your ISP...

Matman58 08-04-2003 10:24 PM

5 times now, and yes it did. It overloaded my cable modem

You mean your connection, not your ISP. :)

And yes, when I was on the server it was very laggy for me as well.

Johnny_5 08-04-2003 11:45 PM

The lag made my client crash. I don't know what their doing put the server is sure laggy.

Darlene159 08-05-2003 12:23 AM

lol, the representative for npulse for tug of war, nor I even saw the event, I suppose because of the lag....he was standing there waiting for it to begin, then was told it was over, never seeing anything...Thym said he signed off, but he never did, he was there from before 3pm Eastern till it was supposedly over, never disconnecting, I was talking to him the whole time.

Tyhm 08-05-2003 01:04 AM

He kept warping out. Hell if I know what he was thinking.
Destorm never showed up, Graal Raider kept saying he was walled when he was right in front of me and resetting...in an endurance event, if you leave for computer trouble, you still leave. 's just how it is. If Unixmad wants to put up another prize, we'll have a rematch on Saturday when the lag's a bit better.

Matman58 08-05-2003 01:06 AM

Personally you need to post pone everything you can till the lag problem is fixed

Nah, most of the reason for the lag is because the Graalympus server is on the same box as a few other pws...There's really nothing you can do about that unless unixmad switched it over to a dedicated box or somethin'...Just deal with it...Tyhm's doing the best he can.

I play on a 56k, that runs more like a 28k, and it just lags for me. You must have a very weak modem.

thesaiyan 08-05-2003 01:43 AM

Im on 56k AND using AOL.. what lag are you talking about?! I haven't had any lag on that server. o.O

He kept PM'ing me saying he was getting warped in and out of the event, HE never left...whatever, I dont mind losing, but I do mind being cheated...and from what I could tell, unstick me doesnt work, so how could anyone warp out?

Nitkizi 08-05-2003 02:12 AM

I only felt lag when I was in a room with 50 other people in it, but that's because i don't have the greastest computer in the world.

Ghost Pirate 08-05-2003 02:22 AM

There was a good amount of lag for a superemely simple server.
Also Silly Tyhm forgot to put into consideration the space in my accountname for that signature book.

dlang 08-05-2003 02:53 AM

I had constant lag the whole time i was there o.o
I just got fed up and left because of the lag...
I have cable internet btw (RoadRunner)

Yeah it only seems to start lagging badly when there's a large load on the box it is hosted on.

The worst that could've happened is that an unfortunate and unplanned set of circumstances led to the disqualification of your representative. Crying foul play just makes you look like a bad loser. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's true.

I think she more ment that, like, Fait cheated them... not that any 1 person cheated them
but then again, that's just the way i took what she was saying...

it's like, bowling, and getting only 9 pins, and 1 wobbling, but doesn;t go down... you'd say "i was robbed" (at least around here you would)
lol
doesn;t mean you were littlerally robbed, like how moonie might not have ment that they were littlerally cheated out of it.

anyways, i am sure moonie can speak for herself, i'm just trying to say how i viewed what she said
=x
(plz no flaming me?)
*hides*

I went on RC there to ask what was going on (and to offer my services to assist in fixing the problem, since just the previous night unixmad had specifically asked Jagen, Angel, and I to help if we could), since for a space I was getting warped repeatedly as well...when I mentioned that I was having that trouble, the response from Tyhm was "F_CKING COPE. YOU DON'T BELONG HERE ANYWAY." and then he opened and set my local ban info, followed by disconnecting me. I did not return to RC, but I remained on client to watch the graalympics. I never heard an "Event Started" announcement, and the vast majority of the people were in the lobby as they had not heard such an announcement either. Since Tyhm was taking some time to address these problems that were occuring, that seemed a nice place to be while we waited for him to fix everything (and presumably announce that everything is fixed, and that you can come watch the even that you've been waiting so long to see). So, with no announcement, I would estimate perhaps over half of those who came to watch the event, were not even able to do so.

In short, poor preparation along with a refusal to ask for or accept help is what caused this event to be, in my opinion, an utter failure. To my knowledge, the graalympics (as well as the real Olympics, past and present) are designed to accomplish two things: firstly, to find out who is the best athlete in each category; secondly, to please the crowd. The term "spectator sport" comes to mind.

With regard to the N-Pulse contestant, having been warped around myself without doing anything abnormal (and witnessing several others who experienced the same and hearing of still more), I can only assume that either 20-30+ people are somehow doing something wrong (with the only possible thing that could be done 'wrong' there being walking up and down some stairs, this hardly seems likely), or there was a problem with the scripting. Considering during the short space I was on RC, an NPC repeatedly mentioned creating a warp or something similar in a sendtorc, I can but suppose that this was indeed a scripting problem. Therefore, Tyhm's statement of "He kept warping out. Hell if I know what he was thinking." rather falls apart, as it was not the contestant somehow exerting power that they could not have controlled to warp out. (Oh, and for future reference, if you don't fix that script, Tyhm, I did seem to manage to stop the repeated warping to the same place by countering it with my own warpto - I warped to one of the outside levels on the main map, and then walked into the lobby, that seemed to unset whatever flag was causing the repeated warping).

I still will be glad to assist Tyhm in fixing it, as that pertains to my job as a global scripter, and I do enjoy my job - I just dislike the way that the graalympics been handled so far, and how I've been treated. Granted, I do understand that Tyhm was under a lot of stress from all of these things going wrong, but I do have a problem with a paid level 4 admin not treating players, let alone fellow staff, with a certain degree of respect.

Darlene159 08-05-2003 07:13 AM

Yes, I saw others warping in and out also, I was in the stands for awhile waiting, and there was next to noone in there, then like you assuming we would be told when the event started, I went in the lobby to sign books and stuff, then came the PM that it was over and that 3 people got disqualified for whatever, the whole thing was crazy

Kai, we were cheated...the other 2 also if the same happened to them, I didnt say Thym himslef cheated me on purpose, but we were still cheated because of bad scripting that was warping people, or causing their connection to go on overload (or so I have heard), and disconnecting them. I'm not a bad loser, I dont mind losing at all, but when we lose because of something that wasnt within our control, then I think I have a right to complain. The event should be done over, and if there are problems, then the whole thing should be postponed until the scripting is fixed, this is how I see it. We arent talking about a typical event, there are decent prizes here. From what I understand, the classic representative won by default because he was lucky enough to be one of the few not being warped around, and not getting disconnected...it wasnt only unfair to me, it was unfair to everyone involved :(

Tyhm 08-05-2003 07:29 AM

By the rules as stated (Okay, this is too laggy so last man standing), you lost and jake/GtA won. As it was an anticlimactic contest which nobody really saw, I'm all for a rematch - but as it would be unfair to take away jake's free TShirt, I can't exactly Just Do It. I need Unixmad to agree to a new prize for the rematch which, as previously mentioned, would be held this coming Saturday at the same time.

Well, okay, that's reasonable. Usually when people talk about being cheated, there's an implied second person doing the cheating. If that wasn't the intended message then I retract my disagreement.

As for rematches, why not just do it for fun? *shrugs*

Sounds reasonable to me

btw, happy birthday Tyhm

Golbez 08-05-2003 09:10 AM

Belive it or not guys... but it did the same to me too. After they got rid of the chat system though I was fine.

Tyhm 08-06-2003 02:33 AM

Endurance rematch scheduled for same time, Saturday.

I'd love to just say Screw this week, let's start it all over next week, give everyone another week to get their submissions in...but unfortunately, I already did that a month ago. If I keep revising the date back a week, we'll run into the start of school before long.

Don't worry...things like this always get better the next year they are done...though if this is the olympics...shouldn't it be every 4 years? :p

Shouldn't it have a Winter version too? ^_~
