Urgent Note to EVERYONE who had paid for a Playerworld:

If you are online, Add IP Ranges and IPs now to accounts. We have already had one problem with one PlayerWorld, we don’t want anymore.

We understand you are probably excited and went straight to developing and uploading, but security needs to be top notch too.

1) Creating an IP range:

There are many ways to get your IP, such as IRC chat, AIM, tools and programs which display it etc... For dial-up users your IP endings will change, but the start may stay the same. Once you have found a way to get your IP address, you need to write down all the IPs you have. Ideally you should get about 15-20.

Lets say I have the following IPs (Which I do not}

64.124.42.44
64.124.88.52
64.74.963.25
64.123.67.32
78.642.96.34
78.642.46.34
78.642.45.32
64.124.85.32

[The first thing to do is put them in numerical order, so 64.*.*.* > 78.*.*.*]

Once you have put them in order, you need to look at what changes and what doesn't. In this case its the first and some of the second parts of the IP address. Which means this IP range for someone with those IPs would be:

64.124.*.*
64.74.*.*
64.123.*.*
78.642.*.*

And in order seperated via a comma: 64.124.*.*,64.74.*.*,64.123.*.*,78.642.*.*

Now many people will just do the following: 64.*.*.* (if the other numbers seem to change a lot) Ideally if you can have a tighter IP range such as: 64.124.*.* then it will be more secure. The reason I suggest multiple recordings of IPs is to get the full range of what your IP could be. Ideally you should take IPs over 2-3days so that it is a greater IP range. REMEMBER: You can always edit or change the IP range, but you can't always get back the Levels and NPCs deleted by an intruder.

---------------
If you can please have a 3 number IP: #.#.#.*
But 2 will be okay, but not as good.

Can someone also Sticky this?

IRC won't give your IP address to other people unless you initate DCC connections to them. IRC sure seems unconfortable to get your own address.
http://whatismyip.com/ is a nice way for people behind routers and such to get their IP number. Other Windows users can also run winipcfg or ipconfig.

78.642.*.*
Actually 255 is the maximum. No 642.

That actually depends on the server. With the rise of idiotic DDoS, servers have begun to mask their user's hosts.

To clarify, I believe Windows NT (NT4, 2K, XP) has ipconfig, and Windowx 9x (95, 98, ME) have winipcfg.

Tyhm 07-13-2003 08:36 AM

Good idea.

And to clarify - dialup users, your IP probably changes every time you log in. So you "get" 15-20 IPs with which to decipher your IP Range by checking it each time you log on.

I wouldn't bother trying to get your IP range from your ISP's help line. I specifically asked them before I moved, and when the installer showed up he was all "Yeah, IP range? Cable's static IP, right?" =_=

Yeah same problem here. Well it took forever to get through, and forever to get through. And the IPs were examples, but okay.

How are things sorted out if all your work has been deleted by some haking your account? That could be alot of chaos. Where did this already happen?

Global Ban, so do backups, but you should be punished too if you cant secure your playerworld.

And its up to them if they wish to post that one of their accnts were obtained.

And I dont know what the passwords are on these playerworld#-Admin accounts, but if its just a basic word, try and get it changed.

Androk 07-17-2003 06:28 AM

First thing I did was make everyone get IP Ranges =)

This won't show the correct IP if your computer is on a network. For examile, the computer I am on atm shows it's IP is 192.168.1.103 but my internet IP is really 12.255.198.36

I set up a network between this computer and the computer in my brother's room. I use the first to numbers that you use (192 and 168) :)

I'm pretty sure those are the first two numbers you _have_ to use when setting up a windows network. When you set up a network with *nix I think there is one more option.

Um, you can use whatever numbers you want, I think. I just picked random numbers from my head that were between 1 and 255 :)

You _have_ to have those two numbers. Se below:

Quote:

From Windows Help
The following table describes, in general terms, the appropriate configuration settings for the network adapter on each of your client computers, and for the local and Internet network adapters on your host computer.

...

The Internet Protocol (IP) address of the local adapter on the host: 192.168.0.1
IP address Unique number 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.x (where X is a number between 2 and 255)

There is no way just by chance you picked those two numbers :\ . They were probabbly already set when you set up the network, windows does that automatically :) .

It used those as examples. It didn't say that you had to use them. I honestly picked them from my head. When setting up the IP for an ethernet card there are no values in the boxes. I can change those values right now if I wanted to and nothing would be harmed :p

I think you're wrong, but my knowledge over computer networks isn't enough to argue about it :\ . Just wait for Kamuii, or someone else who knows about these things, to say which one of us is correct :) .

Why wait? I already modified my network's IP from 192.168.10.* to 205.99.16.* and nothing has been harmed on either computer. I can still play IP based LAN games, such as UT, without a hitch :p

Once again you fail to read. Here let me show you:
Quote:

The following table describes, in general terms...
Now do you understand? It used that particular IP as an example. No where does it say you have to use that. Its like instructions for installing software. You place the disc in drive X where X is your CD drive and you install to drive Y where Y is your harddrive. Usually those happen to be d:\> for CD and c:\> for your harddrive. You can actually use whatever letters you want from a to z to label your drives as long as they have a letter. If I wanted to I could change my harddrive from c:\> to z:\> :p Now this might affect some of my software since it wouldn't recognize that the drive has a new letter, but that's not the point.

I read where is said that, but I took it as it meant something like "lamen" terms. Like for people not-so smart about computer networks.

...I'll be nice and just let that one go :]

But anyway, I set this network up on my own without any help. Probably the only help I needed was to get UT playable over my two computer network. Other than that, I handled it all on my own :) I know pretty well what I am doing when I tamper with my computer. Heck, I ought to since I built this one. I kind of want to overclock it a little but I'm not sure of what my limits are especially for my graphics card. I don't know what safe speed I can increase my GPU to. For now I just leave things as they are, but otherwise I've tweaked lots of XP's features to my liking.

Tyhm 07-21-2003 08:10 AM

In a LAN network, IPs are handled differently. The gateway has a static IP to the rest of the LAN; the rest of the LAN generally uses dynamic IPs to talk to each other, because it doesn't matter as long as no 2 computers use the same IP. The gateway usually asks the ISP for an Internet IP, which is different from its LAN IP. I can't remember right off whether every LAN computer shares that IP or if they each somehow get their own sub-IP...in any case, you can go to whatsmpIP.com and it'll tell you what your IP looks like to the rest of the world. Or you can even read your IP in your player attributes on Graal. That'll definitely tell you what Graal considers your IP to be.

I know that on my network, this computer is 192.168.10.1 and the computer in my brother's room is 192.168.10.2. I just use that last digit to identify any other computer I add to the network such as when my brother's friends bring their computers over. I really need to get a bigger and faster hub >.<

Golbez 07-22-2003 06:01 AM

Well, why should anyone even be on there accounts anyways? I can see if they were hacked, but I dont think it is being hacke dmost of the time. I think its because you share an account. If your going to spend $100 dollars on a server why would you use it with a shared account, or accept exe's from ANYONE on the internet? If I were you Id let who ever is on his account stay let the guy get his punishment lol.

prozac424242 07-24-2003 03:31 AM

too many IP ranges for me ...

im am on one of those huge ISP's, with a dozen
access numbers to dial just in my local area, each one
starting off with the first three numbers being differnt.
The past two weeks alone, i'll bet I had a dozen differnt first three numbers, and for each of those, a dozen more dirrerent ranges for the next three sets. I really dont want to have to list
a hundred IP ranges in there ...

can we use one of those domain pointer services, like mygraalserver.freedns.com and point that to our IP every time we log in? then rc dan dynamically resolve the domain name to the ip address and let only our ip in ...

That would completely defeat the purpose as someone who got ahold of your password could make the domain thingie point at his IP instead of yours.

dlang 07-24-2003 04:56 PM

I should do the same with people I hire..
on my IP only the last set of numbers changes
well actually it doesn't o.o
so I'm secure

EDIT: lol mabe not..
but I used graal to find my real IP... bc I have a LAN and all

HoudiniMan 07-25-2003 12:19 AM

www.whatismyip.com works fine for seeing your outside IP number for everybody who needs to know, i think it was already mentioned here.

funnylinkwantsbomys 07-28-2003 12:19 PM

Routers
When using a router, the router automatically assigns your ip adress to 192.168 and only lets you choose the last numbers.

There is no way to change these numbers in the front

Try going to 192.168.1.1 in internet explorer and type in admin in the password box. It most likely will send you to your router setup page.
