Scripting School

Yep, a school for scripting. Two purposes:

1) Teach the basics of GScript

Interactive lessons would be scheduled (most likely taking place on an IRC server), wherein members of the GST would give lessons on scripting fundamentals. The classes would be divided across various skill levels from Beginner to Expert, and would give individuals the ability to pose questions to the teachers.

For those who miss the lessons, logs would be taken and made available for download.

2) Award certifications

Most managers aren't expert scripters, so it's sometimes difficult for them to accurately judge an applicant's skills. That's why the idea of official certifications was formed. Would-be employees can take part in a scripting test and be awarded a grade based on their performance. These would all be stored by the school and could be passed on to managers at the consent of the scripter.

Personally I think this would be an excellent addition to Graal (even though it wasn't my idea), but it relies on public interest. Learners, we need to know how many people would be interested in attending lessons. Managers, would you be interested in making use of the certification system? Scripters, would you be happy to have your skills graded? Give us feedback or die.

I'd like this a lot. I've been wanting to learn to script for some time now, and the tutorial in the folder just bored me to death. I'd really like for you guys to actually go through with this.

Neoreno 07-01-2003 09:08 PM

I think I'll enroll if it starts out. I'm not what you'd call one of Graal's best. :P

'sides. I have nothing else to do.

My thoughts exactly. Tutorials are nice, but you can't question a document if you don't fully understand it. It's extremely useful to have a human on hand, ready and willing to elucidate for you.

Deek2 07-01-2003 09:32 PM

::pees pants:: OMG OMG OMG
Sure, I'd love to learn it. :)

Brandon 07-01-2003 09:52 PM

Maybe those who successfully complete the schooling would receive Graal+ Certification, or so. :)

Thallen 07-01-2003 09:58 PM

That'd be great. I'm not a very advanced scripter, but, under the teachings of the great Kaimetsu, I'm sure I could learn a thing or two. ;)

Golbez 07-01-2003 10:00 PM

You'll see me there, I cant wait to learn how to script :D
(Mybe you can make a Graal Scripting For Dummies book XD)
Well, I cant wait till this is up :D!

MarkB 07-01-2003 10:07 PM

Kaimetsu, this is prolly the most brilliant thing I have seen from you, good idea. I would love to learn to script better.

I hope this actually gets up off the ground

brock128 07-02-2003 06:32 PM

If I can learn NPC scripting, I may actually get a server up.

Count me in.

Androk 07-02-2003 06:47 PM

adam 07-02-2003 10:48 PM

:)

I like this idea.

Would be great if you could give people a "Script Rating"

That way we can all compete to get to the top of the Script Rating tree.

Would be difficult to make it objective, some scripters are better at some things than others. And some just "look" better than others, even though they require the same amount of talent, just in different area's.

protagonist 07-02-2003 11:05 PM

I was actually going to suggest something similar to Adam. Have a few semi-daily contest where you have a project for the scripters to complete at different levels of scripting so as to provide challenge. Whichever script is the most efficient and readable could win a prize. Maybe even hook up a website that shows who's graduated.

Great. You're my human ***** now. ;D Bish, make me a cheese sandwich.

Soul-Blade 07-02-2003 11:50 PM

Hmm would that really teach people to script? Dunno, personally I learned by studying other scripts when I was really new, and when Shadow Dragons was around. From there I started my own stuff (Started Murasamune a little before) and slowly I got to be a very good scripter...

Experience and time are the greatest teachers, and there is not a single way to replace them. Personally I think if someone has a will to learn to script, then they will script. That is how it worked for me, and I am certain for many others.

Perhaps I am just jealous I had to learn myself, perhaps not. I think all managers without knowledge of script should be forced to learn script, anywho, because how can you review scripting applicants if you cannot go through and debug the script, view the script, see how well it functions? Some people have impressive looking script, but inefficient, and long.

Riot recently made a site (look at my sig):
www.gscript.us

Its under construction now..but it will be done soon.
I will be helping him with some tutorials for beginners.
Check the site,it will help people a lot as soon as Riot finish the site.

One option would be to trust your NAT Admin. (assuming you have one)

Me I can understand and read scripting enough to see what it is supposed to do when functioning properly. But for the quality of the script I always ask my best friend Giltwist. :D

Darlene159 07-03-2003 12:19 AM

Good idea
I can only do very basic scripting and thats because I have seen it so many times, and I copy and paste alot, lol
I cant make heads or tails out of some of the language in the txt file either, so I think classes is a good idea

bobp 07-03-2003 12:32 AM

Yes even IF I had a tutorial/book right in front of me I would still have trouble understanding since I like to ask alot of questions.

Ah, in your case that is ok, considering you have a brilliant, and extremely trust worthy, scripter on your side ;)

How is this not teaching by example? Apart from we're breaking down examples and teaching it bit by bit. And they can ask my bot questions that at the end of the session we will answer in turn they were asked. (Pending ok from unix and stefan) Open Up a Server for 2 hours after class for people to come on and test out what they learned and we will be there to answer questions and help out. To Me I think it will be a good place to learn in a good manner. And learn how to script the correct way.

Good idea but the only people I'd take lessons from would probably be:
1. Kaimetsu
2. Angel
Other than that, I probably wouldn't learn much.

Kaimetsu, Kyle, or Jeff. ;o That's who I'd take lessons from. (Just because I don't know Angel very well. x_x)

I'm just stating that Kaimetsu and Angel are probably the only ones who could teach me anything new. I'm a hard person to teach because I have many questions, Kaimetsu is good at answering my questions.
