No, you can still mine the old way. There's many rocks mostly on the left part of the mines that you can still mine the regular way.

Also if you go deep into the other mine, the one near balor, you can mine the old way there too.

You can perform the old art of mining in every room which is bare of tracks and has stones which you don't have to crack from the wall.
