Holy Wars

I've been thinking about this for a while. Wars between the followers of specific gods. Can you imagine the hordes of Ogmites and Govannites charging at each other, avatars blazing and spells flying? Possibly some way each week or so that it happens, and you can take place by going to your god's altar and..doing something. When the holy war begins, the two sides just battle it out. Possibly that you can ONLY use prayers, to be more Priest-ish. The war ends when a whole side is defeated (The dead guys would remain in limbo...or possibly not be able to re-enter.) The losing god has his powers weakened for the next week. Ideas? Comments? Throw apples? Whatever.
(You make any middle eastern jokes about "Holy War" i massacre you.)

The idea is good, I'd like to see a clash of ideologies of the gods. Maybe players can even get bonuses for it, but I hope it doesn't replace loyalty to the kingdoms. I can easily see someone fighting for their god only, and not for kingdoms themselves.

Has anyone ever actually won a holy war?

Dark-Dragoon 05-01-2003 03:15 AM

I don't believe so. But then again, do people win NORMAL wars? It may be bad for the 'losers', but the winning nation has sustained losses as well.
But that doesn't happen in Graal. People just respawn, no harm done.

Not always...

Come on now, people. Keep your political debates in the Non-Graal Related Forum ..

Power-weakening of the gods? Why don't you just delete the priest class altogether, hm? take the sorcerors as well...They have it hard enough, no need to penalize them further. And don't have it as regularly as every week, maybe once every month, and it should be for the truly devout only, in other words, those with higher wisdom level than any other skill level.

mhermher 05-01-2003 10:30 AM

You should be able to use weapons too.. but blessed ones makes much more power from your god.
*thinks of my gova +6 vicious axe, that makes 19 damage, 30 damage overall, 3/7 prep*

Satrek2000 05-01-2003 11:47 AM

Gov+6? Holy sheep...

Anyway, the ides sounds good (even though - as we knw - I can't pray yet). Maybe it could be done by means of an event, those priests who want to participate go to their altars and pray, maybe during a period of 5 minutes. They get warped on a tourney-cloud and fight with the followers of another god. The number should be limited. But... why a plain holy war, why not a "tourney of gods"? The followers of the 8 gods fight in 3 rounds to determine who's the most powerful god - then for a week his followers receive some bonus or item... dunno... I think in comparison to a plain holy war this kind of tourney would have a straight result...

Dark-Dragoon 05-01-2003 10:13 PM

True, tourney OR holy wars would work. But I was thinking more of a war between enemy gods, not a compitetion to show who is best.
And I supposed weakening IS a bad idea. How about the winning god just gets stronger? But that leads to problems...the winning side has to get SOMETHING.

LilNiglet 05-01-2003 11:22 PM

Allah ackbar ;)

Well, anywho, it makes sense to have a holy war. I mean, in the god descriptions, it lists the god's rival or whatever, right? And maybe an admin could take the form of the god's avatar and fight alongside his\her followers. o.o

Locke_boy 05-01-2003 11:32 PM

Not all gods have an enemy (problem).

Also. Having the followers of every god duke it out? Bad idea. Govannon would win.

Followers of Brigid: ~3-5
Followers of DianCecht: 2?
Followers of Aengus: 1-5
Followers of Govannon: ~50+

Do I bother to continue?

Dark-Dragoon 05-01-2003 11:35 PM

Perhaps continue to Ogma? And Bile?
Not to mention with new God stuff coming out, other gods will be as good.

Kaiser2 05-01-2003 11:47 PM

Bile: newbs, 'nuff said
Ogma: maybe 10
Leucetious has no rival, so that doesn't matter.
Balor: newbs, for flaming aura, 'nuff said again

Locke_boy 05-02-2003 01:45 AM

No, you don't understand, my point is that there shouldn't be wars with all god followers involved when there is such an imbalance in who follows which god.

Kaiser2 05-02-2003 06:51 AM

I do understand, I'm just saying, newbs are many, but they are weak.

Satrek2000 05-02-2003 07:37 PM

Be it a war or a turney, the number of participants on each side has to be limited... maybe at random, maybe by some pre-contest... Also, perhaps there's a way to even out the numbers by NPCs, to fill up the ranks of either side with illusions... and I think the winner's advantage should be temporary, like more grace - or better, less for the loser.

Locke_boy 05-02-2003 08:46 PM

Perhaps a good prize would be some sort of item for each winner that is related to their god. Like, for Brigid followers, light armour that gives high physical resistance (since they can't use weapons) and some speed. Or for Govannon followers, powerful armour that boosts slow and confuse resistance. For Ogma followers, a club that strongly poisons and boosts magic resistance. Et cetera.

Names could be things like ..

Leather armour of Brigid
Heavy platemail of Govannon
Orcish club of Ogma

Satrek2000 05-03-2003 12:55 AM

You should also exclude artifacts (and possible tourney-prices) from the event - so followers of a past winner-god don't have an advantage next time (at least, not more than they already have...)
