Problem with Swear Filter
i really do understand that the intentions on the swear filter were good. but i find it frustrating when i cannot express myself on these fourms i like so much, and i'm not talking about profanity, the forums can do without that, but in my customs text, i can't set it to "Forums Addict" why? i also noticed that a slang for homosexual is blocked out? well i think that homosexuals could find taht offincive becuase it's kind of saying that they are bad? (not that i am homosexual but i was reading a thread and it was blocked out so i though uhh what the heck?) the slang for newbi is also blocked out, why? i mean people call eachother that more In game then on the fourms so why block it when people might want to use the word ;[
arg i dunno, but the filter should be cut back a bit :[ |
Also, the word for chicken is blocked out...c***
|
i'm really glad it is being reviewed :]
when i set it to fourm's addict it shows up as *****s addict :| Quote:
i'm being seriouse in this thread ;x |

You ****ing street *****. Get my point? It is used for bad intention, but the swear filder should be used for profanity. Other words like newbie shouldn't be blocked out, oh, and geeeeee server shouldn't be blocked out either. The fourm admins and moderators should be checking the forums reguraly to see if people are using the context in a bad way and if so deal out punishment.

We're actually discussing this in the sandbox right now on what to do. Most of us agree that we need to remove some of the words on the filter, when that will be done is something different.

Swear filters are there for a reason.
If you find a word that you think shouldn't be blocked, simply use a synonym - it's not that hard. Then again, from what I've read, the filter used on these forums really needs to be checked out. |

remember the discussion in the thread about war?
eventually we got to arguing over communism, and ****** (the leader of Germany in WWII), germany in WWII was under the control of the **** government 0.o' now why is that blocked? is his name offencive? is the **** party offencive? I mean, i understand about WWII and all... but still, we were having a discussion, and it made it hard to say what we mean :\ |

Hey, I'd love to remove some of the filters but but some mods insist that we should place strict filters and suppress them on everyone just because a few nimrods on these forums like to use these words in a bad way. It's like putting a curfew on everyone just because you're got a few idiots abusing the system.
|
Are you ignoring my replys or something? Stop being lazy and ban them yo!
|
why should we be put on a curfew so to speak when you can just put a red hot poker in the idiots eyes

I also find it amusing that you, right away, must state that you are NOT homosexual. Does it matter? -.-; |

Graal is the very French word for grail.
Swear filters are not good. Few swearing is almost okay. It does not hurt anybody here, and it perhaps helps expressing anger. If swearing is abused to harass others, or used over a certain extent of acception, this community itself can "punish" the offender by ignoring him, or valueing him less. Someone who swears a lot just is working against him/herself, as he/she will lose respect in this community, which is far more punishing than a few asterisks. Also I think that it is generally not a good idea to use automatical devices to make people follow the rules, in an online community. If rules cannot defend themselves, they are perhaps not worth to be held, and thus shall be made more appropriate. Also, this swear filters makes people think it is okay to swear, as it gets blocked out anyways. I think it is much better to have a moderator personally message the offender and warn them :) [edit]someone ate the ****ing line breaks[/edit] |
