Today's Idea: Bookstore

Ok, now, here's what I've got today.

A shop that sells empty books and tomes of different sizes (text length). The larger the book, the more it costs to buy. Now, if a Graalian buys the book, and writes a story in it, they can bring it back to the shop and return it to the NPC, and set a selling price on the book (which starts out with a limit on the amount able to be asked of the cost of the book + 5p) People can then come and buy your book, and you will make half of the selling price back (shop has to make some money). Now, as your writing becomes popular, and more people buy your books, the amount you can ask for them will go up. So if you're a good writer and people enjoy your writing, they can come and buy your new books as long as you don't start charging outrageous prices for them. I realize that you'll lose money at first, but that's usually how writing works, you have to make yourself known first. ^.~.
So first off, you can't buy your own book to make yourself seem more popular, and probably only the dedicated authors will try it, considering you'll probably lose money at first.

Just an idea for people to make money without having to kill things.

I think it's a great idea! It would make RPing even better .. you could RP an author.

Sounds good to me. Only problem is 1) people are cheap and 2) people will circulate the books, same as with alchem recipes.

One thing I've always looked forward to is Scribing Tomes and Scrolls and Books. You can use_skill inscription to make a scroll of any spell/prayer 1 level below or a book or tome of any spell/prayer at least two levels below your max casting level - so an L2 sorceror can make a Scroll of Magic Bullet, but an L3 sorceror can make a spellbook of Magic Bullet.

Money for Magi.

The only problem is that people will make 50000 copies of each spell and then sell them (which isnt bad) or restart and use a bunch of those to make sure they learn all their spells back. :\ (not that it would be bad either, but people would complain)

Can you explain what you mean by this? I'm intrigued so far, but it is a tad confusing.

Also, the bookstore idea is awesome, and for the books? to prevent circualtion, when they drop it, or try to give it through safe trade, it'll disappear (if the drop it) and it'll say "sorry, the author needs to make money too, don't circulate the books" or something, and if you safe trade, it'll just stop you from doing so.

1) You can only make as many copies as you can find blank grimoires or tomes. They are neither overwhelmingly cheap nor common. It's not like they can jot down Spellbook of Magic Bullet on a napkin or a letter.
2) You can only make grimoires of spells 2 below your casting level. You can't make any grimoires at level 2 (because they'd be caster level 0 spells); you'd have to be level 5 to make a grimoire of alchemy, etc.
Even if resetting, you'd need the level and intelligence to understand your own grimoires, and you'd only get your newbie spells back - the top 2 levels of spells you used-ta-could cast are gone, because you couldn't make books for 'em.
3) Spells you can cast only - you can't make an IWD or Woodsman scroll, only Fireball, etc. For when you need to cast and you're low on magic, but more likely for when you're low on cash. ^_~

Eh I meant making lots of spells and having a bookstore so you can buy all those books, not just creating all those books from nowhere :P

Tyhm, is this a suggestion, or something you can actually do, cuz I'm confused :(

It's a suggestion.

Kaiser2 03-02-2003 03:15 AM

ah...well...it would make sense, but you'd need to know what is inside the spellbooks that you read from to learn spells to do this, and that'll take a while to come up with, but it is a good suggestion.
