New magic system is terrible.

The new magic system, although useful in some things (faster casting) is generally .. very bad. My medium snowstorm, which once could attack many enemies at once, can now only hit enemies within a small, maybe three feet diameter circle. Create bomb is .. okay. At least it has a slightly larger area. The only spells that I can use anymore to hurt enemies are create bomb, frostbolt, and icestorm. That's all that's useful. Frostbolt is still as powerful as it used to be, and icestorm is a bit stronger, but aside from that, it's bad. My medium fireball is also very bad, now ..

Medium spells are now just as big as the small ones (which are even smaller now) ..
.. spells that once were useful no longer are.

The only thing I like is the faster casting, but .. let's face it, in PVP, it's still too slow.

I used to be able to make money easily, but now, since my spells are so small (and still cost just as much mana), it takes a very long time to kill monsters .. much longer than it used to.

:: sighs :: .. well. Stefan got half of it right, I guess .. :\

Rax 02-16-2003 02:38 AM

I rather have laggy big spells than faster casting crap spells

Well .. that's one way of putting it.

LOA--Paul 02-16-2003 03:05 AM

The mana needed for the spells that were downgraded should be lower and it would be a LITTLE bit better

Kaiser2 02-16-2003 03:24 AM

you do more damage with your spells, kthx bye  you need to listen to Stefan more often.

We know that.

Obviously, that isn't pleasing to us.

You need to listen to other players, then.. and don't give that "kthxbai" garbage. :\

Shrimp Okonomiyaki 02-16-2003 04:26 AM

Stefan needs to take my ideas on making spells get larger and stronger with Pow and Magic level, and casting time getting faster with Int and Mental level.

Kaiser2 02-16-2003 04:50 AM

and he should make basic spells, which you hold out your rod and it has the purple glow, be quicker, when fighting ogma users, it's hard to pull off a cure poison spell w/o getting beaten to death with a club x.x

That would be perfection.

konidias 02-16-2003 05:56 AM

Am I the only one that thinks this is a big improvement? I'm sure you will miss the mega-1337, take up the whole screen, last 30 seconds, lag everyone to hell, super huge magic spells. But these are 100 times better since they not only are less laggy, they do more damage, and you need to have accuracy to use it.

I'm glad they finally went the right way with magic instead of the "cast my super huge spell and use no game skill whatsoever" spells. I'm sure you're only upset because you can't go into dungeons, cast a huge snowstorm, and then leave the room while the monsters all slowly die. Well too bad, I think it's much better that you have to at least attempt to aim.

The magic spells also target and home in on enemies now, which makes it better. The new system involves using some actual skill and strategy, instead of just typing "/cast spellname" and pressing D at the entrance of a dungeon and letting your spell do all the work, while lagging everyone else but yourself.

Kaiser2 02-16-2003 06:07 AM

I entirely agree, though I think the spells should have a bit longer duration, maybe 10 second more.

Locke_boy 02-16-2003 06:39 AM

Matter of opinion, Konidias.

I'm dissatisfied with the system.

A medium snowstorm covers an area that I can walk around in 2 seconds.

A medium. snowstorm.

A snowstorm is not supposed to be as big as a small child.

I don't call it accuracy, either. I call it plain annoying. I don't mind attacking enemies individually with attacks, but this is idiotic. I cast a spell, and it stays in one spot. I have to try and lure the monster to it, and most of the time .. it won't go near it.

Real brilliant, there.

I could go on, but I'm really not in the mood for this.

I'd say it's a step in the right direction - it just needs some fine-tuning. Calling it 'terrible' is hardly fair.

Well, yes. It is a bit harsh .. sorry about that. It's not terrible, but it's still not great. Heh, I've been sort of harsh all day .. I just have a terrible headache .. :\

zell12 02-16-2003 09:04 AM

Sure, its fast, but the barbs just run, then we run out of mp, and food from the energy needed to regain sp, and they come back and kill us. MP was a drawback, food lose is a drawback, but now these sorry half-assed spells... I hate it. And as long as stefan won't listen to people that are making the suggestions, this game will contune to be unbalanced...:\

--Chris-- 02-16-2003 09:51 AM

I actually like this alot and wish you would stop whining Locke. Also...use spells like large bullet or weaken your enemies with sword then just cast a spell to finish them off, anyone with a brain would do that and I doubt the strenght of it would matter if they are weakened down to like 5hp....not to mention the large mass was REALLY uneccessary.

Tseng 02-16-2003 06:43 PM

The casting of some spells is a bit TOO fast now ;X

And I don't see much of a size difference at all between small, medium, and large spells. Maybe a damage difference? Then rename the spell categories. Weakest, weaker, and weak.

I don't use swords. I follow Brigid.

Try using only magic, and fighting enemies. Eventually, you'll get low on mana, and you'll have to wait for mana regen. 11 mana for a spell that covers an area that can only attack one stationary monster? That's ridiculous.

You've got your 7/7 naginata. You've got nothing to worry about. There are people who don't use weapons, and this just isn't so great for them. I'm not saying I want enormous spells .. I just want balance, and this isn't it.

Yes, because that's all they are, is weak. They're useless now. I don't even cast them anymore ..

I truely don't understand what you're expecting. You want magic to use less mana? The whole point of magic is to sacrifice mana for attacks. You shouldn't get special treatment because you use magic. You can use one spell and kill a monster from a distance, while most players need to attack it several times with melee up close in order to kill it.

Here's a tip, find a way to get your magic to regen faster, also, the small, medium, and large spells, do different amounts of damage. When you fight a strong monster, you will realise that medium and large spells DO have a use. You just need to know what spell to use on what monster. Using large spells on a weak enemy is retarded, and if you do that, you're retarded. :P

Also I just wanted to note, it seems the entire reason you're upset is because you no longer have big spells that take up the whole screen and kill everything on it. This is a disadvantage to you because it's no longer a piece of cake killing monsters. Tough cookies.

That's not why I'm upset. I just think that the spread spells (not the cones) were given the wrong approach. In my opinion, I think the "small" spells should be one "block", the mediums two by two, and the larges four by four, or three by three (create bomb being considered large). As it stands, the most enemies I've hit with a medium snowstorm is two (and they walked away from it right afterward). That's not really much of a snowstorm, eh? I'm not asking for room-clearing spells, I just think that the current spells are just WAY too small, and would make PVP even more impossible. Currently, there is only one spell that is useful in PVP (maybe a few others, if you count the "bolt" spells, but those are easily dodged) .. cause serious wounds. I know the prayer, but I'm not leaving Brigid just so I can use it. :\

Casting is fine... now tweaking damage to mana cost ratios and fixing some spells... small fireball and small snowstorm dont damage the target at all sometimes...

The ball/storm spells didnt need THAT much of a size decrease... it just needed to be sped up really... like instead of fire lingering for several seconds... just show up, deal damage, and disappear... simple.

Bullets at the moment have the highest damage to mana cost ratio for wizard spells

Well put.

Kaimetsu 02-17-2003 05:17 AM

Maybe there need to be more varied spells. Things like instant random short-range teleportation to escape from the Barbarian charging at you, or a spell to freeze him in place for a while. Maybe it'd be cool if you could bind a spell to your armor so that it casts as soon as anybody hits you. Has to be reprepared every time it's used, of course.

zell12 02-17-2003 05:21 AM

Thing is though, in order for it to work on you, you cannot cast it around someone else, or you have to drag the icon over you... And there comes the problem with the wounds... It should target the closest person if you don't drag an icon on to someone, and it should go over everyone and every thing besides the target person. Barbs are scared of a few cause critical wounds and they run behind people, objects, or even the caster.

An excellent idea, especially binding a spellto your armor, but instead of needing to repair the armor, make it a one use thing, then you need to bind it again, and binding would inlove you casting the spell or something. And when you are hit, it does the effect immediately, not make you cast the spell, or that would make it even easier on warrior :\ But since you can equip multiple armor pieces, you can combine spells, like, the helmet could have healing in it, the armor have create bomb, the shoes cast paralyze (a bit ironic, but what the heck), the shield could have cure poison, and the gloves could have large lightning, remember, this is just one combination, you can make it others your own :)

Are you ever satistified with any system that they introduce? You need to get over it and stop *****ing. No one forced you to play, so you don't like it, then **** off.

TeRRi2k 02-17-2003 06:08 AM

Someone noticed that when you try to stop your spell with your shield...most of the time it won't work?
Hmm I can't use my large snowstorm no more((*hears people mumbling "yey!"*)). Before, it can kill like at LEAST 10 monsters in one area, now it doesn't even kill one. And I'm only talking about stuff like gloks.

:(
casting spells faster is nice..but i rather have spells that actually does some damage..(my mana blast disappeared after 2 seconds x.x)

Kaiser2 02-17-2003 06:12 AM

Yes, they made it so you can't stop spells by putting your shield out, which I really hate, because I have a lot of spells on hotkey, and I have a bad keyboard, so I often hit the button for create bomb and can't stop it from casting.
Also, like I said before, the duration for the spells needs to be increased.

That wasn't needed.

You need to remember that this is still beta. I've giving my input. If you don't like it, don't listen.

Kinatt 02-21-2003 07:34 PM

since theres IWD hwo about a IMD where you increase Magic damage or something :/

zell12 02-21-2003 10:37 PM

There is a potion for that.

Kinatt 02-21-2003 10:44 PM

there is? omg wtf are you guys complaining then

zell12 02-21-2003 10:53 PM

We are complaining because it does like 5 hp, and it takes like 40 mp and we also have to keep the spell on the target we want to kill, which is a radius of 20 tiles. Damage+Power=Mana Consumpshion.

Kinatt 02-24-2003 04:54 AM

who knows.. I think classes are pointless from what I know about graal which isnt alot. basically saying.. there isn't a difference exceptw hen you start out?

zell12 02-24-2003 03:02 PM

Stefan said that differances are for starting out. But for alchemists, you must be at level 3 before you can do anything, so its pointless. :)
