plugins!
plugins! thats right, graal should allow for plugins to be made :) to allow more customization :) like possibly when they enter a world they are checked to see if they have the plugin needed to play correctly and they can download it :)
only down side I see is people "hacking" into peoples accounts and stuff via this plugin feature, BUT! what is better? having cooler stuff or just making graal boring and old.. |
It would be cool, as long as only people like Unix and Stefan could make plugins, else people coudl make their own cheat ones like you said.
|
well maybe others could make plugins but they have to be accepted and digitally signed to work on the server.
or! they can work but it warns you of the consequences. Also it would be server side type plugins. Kind of like you cant go on a server and use a plugin that wasnt added to that server. Also there could be digitally signed ones so that stefan could add them... well one of the reasons I want to do this is because we can make plugins and stuff that will allow connection to a remote MYSQL database to link websites to PWs and also you can do much more like make the engine better. In fact you can probably even create your own type of client to allow different type of game play. Also remaking your own client/plugin could decrease lag :) There are many many things that could be done with plugins. It would allow stefan to kind of take a break from scripting so much and also would allow others to make things that they wish graal could do. That means the players can update the engine themselves instead of waiting for updates/upgrades though this would require basicly rewritting tons of things.... it would be well worth it. If you need any help I could offer my services... |

Sure, shooting ourselves in the feet might lead to gangrene and amputation, BUT! What is better? Nice chocolate or bad chocolate? |
yea thats exactly it... but it is actually related to itself unlike chocolate gangrene and amputation, you are no longer my hero :\
The argument is "gaining access to peoples accounts is possible if someone has access to the server, but what would you prefer less security or more customizability". There are ways to protect against someone taking passwords, such as making the login and all of that unable to be "modified" by plugins or even associated with them. It wont load the plugins untill it connects to the server and passwords shouldnt really be cached in memory or anything. either way I believe I gave a few other options on how it could work :) |
None can really negate the cheating factor. What could these plugins do that normal scripts cannot? Connecting to websites is fine, but it's hardly crucial. It's not likely to improve the gameplay in any sizable way.
|
um yes it could, people could create plugins to lower lag by basicly creating a new engine.
this isnt just to make new NPCs its to make different features. The possibilities are endless really... Also more ability for customization could lead to more talented (older) people to come in and create basicly their own game with this engine... |

of course I wouldnt, in fact this is the whole point....
I would want to update the engine. I would use something like this to its fullest. I know many people that are put off by not having an existing working engine and/or servers. So anyway this would require rewritting basicly everything and it is not going to happen so... yea if they want to do this I'd be sure to lend some help edit: I just read again what you wrote, some examples of fun things to be made by having plugins: chat system voice chat video chat streaming audio sms systems (possible, though not sure if wanted) P2P network site integration (eg: forums, chat rooms, top sites, statistics) browsing (more advanced interactive browsing type system) better RC better guild managment there are many more things you can do but I am lazy and I just said the first things that came to mind |
