Graal - First MMORPGs, now FPS?!

Unix openly announced (too lazy toget the link) that they based the graal 3d engine on Tribes 2. That means that graal 3d is basically going to be a FPS, in my eyes. Why can't graal be graal?

Yep. That's all I have to say. Now back to my forever gone state.

Spark910 01-09-2003 10:22 PM

Its uses the engine that is used in FPSs! It will still be a ROleplaying game, it will be 2002 but 3D Basically not a FPS

Birdbird_0 01-09-2003 10:49 PM

I wana make a mmorpg fps

With the new engine

Torque, the engine they are using costs $100 if I remember correctly.

I personally am open to the idea of being first person in Graal 3D, if that is even possible. I wouldn't mind something new at all

The problem is that it wouldn't be something new, because of all the other games that already do that.

It wouldn't be something new if it was third person either, other games do that.

It doesn't matter how many FPS games their are, it is the quality of the FPS games. For a recent example, take Battlefield 1942.

What the hell are you even talking about?

Googi remarked it wouldn't be something new because it is third-person (other games do that). The fact is that FPS is a genre and it isn't a "do", it's just a play-mold. Everything can be different from other FPS games besides the fact that you are looking through the eyes of your character. What Googi said was like saying Sonic the Hedgehod copied Mario, when they are two different things, with the only thing being common the famous jump that comes with the platform genre. There are other similarities, but nothing big.

I know what a FPS is, and that wasn't what you were talking about.

You seem to have confused yourself. You are measuring quantity of games across the market against quality of individual games. This is not how the phrase is supposed to be used. It is in fact meant to be a justification of concentrating on a single product/whatever rather than creating several at once. Apparently you are the one who doesn't know what it means.

Damn I wish I had alteast half your brain power!

konidias 01-10-2003 03:07 AM

Um, the torque engine can make any 3d game. Not just a FPS. Besides, how many possible combinations could you make with Graal being 3D anyway? You have first person shooter, third person action, 3/4th, topdown, and isometric. I personally think it would be nice to have a versatile camera that could go in any of these views.

It's not like it's impossible to change a camera for christs sake.

Which is why there shouldn't be Graal3D, atleast that way Graal will be old but unique. If I wanted to play something 3D online, I wouldn't be playing Graal.

melissa1988 01-10-2003 07:09 PM

Okay, here's what I think you should do to give players the best of both worlds...

Make Graal 2k2 Peaceful mode the classic 2D theme where you spend most of your time doing quests and role playing...The Graal everyone is used to now...

Make Graal 3D Kingdoms Battle mode. This will be where you make take full advantage of the Tribes 2 engine and create a totally unique way of battling...I don't know, just make it cool..heh

Okay that's all I wanted to suggest. Comments welcome.

I still want Graal3d to be like Dynasty Warriors 3

Then this will be your queue to leave then.

How long can graal live off of the old style? Do you think new players will be attracted to the game just because it's always been one way? Newer players will be looking for something new and innovative, not being interested in the "way things are, the traditional Graal". How does Graal attract players 2-3 years down the road? The same old style? It won't live if it does that

Well, I agree that graal should not remain the same forever, but at least finish the 2D part of graal before adding the 3D part.

Graal has a better chance of attracting players as a 2D game than as a 3D one. Atleast that way Graal is unique. If it goes 3D, it will be just like every other game, and there'll be no reason to play in instead of <insert other terrible 3D game here>.

As a consumer in the gaming market, I would not want to purchase an all out 2D game that has no intenion of innovation. 3D games are where it's at. Besides, just because Graal will now go 3D does not mean it will still lose it's "Graalian" characteristics and there will still be 2D playerworlds being made.

Edit: I didn't mean for you to go leave literally, it was a rhetoric statement, but you have very traditionalist values that will not stand up in the gaming community forever.

Googi 01-10-2003 11:31 PM

I'm saying that Graal will never be able to be the best 3D MMORPG on the net, it just won't happen.

Neither do I, I don't think they planned to face off against other *undisclosed MMORPG's* that have hundreds of thousands of players either

Yes, and because there are such better MMORPGs, why would I want to play Graal?

Why else do you think they'd use a Tribes 2 engine?

Mista_Micro 01-11-2003 02:21 AM

In the past few weeks IMG has been bringing you news updates on V12, the licensable version of the Tribes 2 engine. GarageGames has stated in the past that they are working on a Mac version of the engine, which will be be available to any developer for an amazing $100 license, assuming you're willing to let GarageGames publish any titles you might make with it.

Like I said before most MMORPGs are just one-player-games where the monsters are managed servers-side and you see other people from time to time. Graal is more based on player interaction and communication, we focus the Graal3D on that too. It's not a FPS either since you can do short-distance attacks too (sword).

Well thats slightly untrue to me
I played several beta version and I was running into people left and right, and fighting with each other. Of course I only played a few beta version MMORPGs. Also I hope Graal3d has WAY better gameplay than Graal Kingdoms. Unless you are still going with that whole Graal3d is inside of Graal Kingdoms idea (which I must say is rather dumb)

Almost ALL FPS have a melee weapon

BeZeRkEr 01-13-2003 08:47 AM

something like JK2 would be nice
first person for weapons that shoot
and third person for melee weapons

It's cheaper, you're already here, and it might just offer something new that other MMORPG's don't.

Well, yes, but that's not enough of a reason. I don't mind paying more for something better.

Namely bomys ;).

On 2K2 they're just pathetic NPCs though, and I haven't even seen one in the new Graal3D screenshots.

Yeah, well this probably won't be your ordinary Graal. The ballista (catapult) looked like an NPC to me, same with the sword the viking had.

Not in the traditional sense. Weapons aren't really Non-Player Characters.

Yeah, but in Graal we consider all things in our inventory NPC's (including weapons, tools and other msicellaneous items) which was what I was referring to.
