Turn Based Battle System

You walk up to a bomy.
You attack.
You run away.
A few seconds later you find your at half life.

Lag. It kills. And you won't see it coming.

New Approach:

You walk up to a bomy.
A few seconds later. (lag) It says you are being attacked by bomy
It says it's your turn.
You choose attack:
You attack and it says (you do x amount of damage or miss)
Bomy's turn. He attacks:

It's all good. Lagging wont' get you killed anymore.

The peasants rejoice!

Noway
I like Graals fighting system, it seems more real =)

As for laggers, get cable/dsl.

ReaperJ 10-28-2002 12:56 PM

yea i dont lag much at all unless someoen is casting one of the infamous lag spells =P

and i kill bommys in one hit and they take 3 hours to kill me so..not a problem =P heh

TerrorBite 10-29-2002 05:42 PM

yeh, get cable/dsl or use magic... ^.^ I used a magic based character to get really strong and now I am focusing on my physical skills, so I will still be alive when I lag a bit :P

screen_name 10-29-2002 09:15 PM

This would be unfair for higher level people, well higher level sorcs. Having to kill 1 by 1, you know how long that would take compared to killing a mass amount of monsters.

AlexH 10-29-2002 11:26 PM

I'd rather it was kept the same way.
Makes fighting much more difficult and realistic.
People need to start upgrading their computers.
Graals requirments can't stay low forever.

It has nothing to do with machine specs and everything to do with a bad/slow connection. *not neccisarily the same thing*

It's the other way around.

I lag worse than a lot of people yet my machine is far better than thiers.

explain please.

Ibonic 10-30-2002 03:09 AM

the lag that "kills" players relates to their internet connection(s); unfortunately, not everyone lives where cable, DSL or most other types of semi-fast connections are available -- I have actually had this problem in the past

the "other way around" makes no sense because I have a dual 1.7 GHz PC with 3.5 GB RAM (which doesn't "lag"), and I have died on Graal2002 because I was using a 56K modem internet connection

zell12 10-30-2002 03:16 AM

Internet connection plays little part in your system performance on Graal.
What does play a mayjor factor on it is:
  • Amount of umph to your Video Card.
  • Amount of RAM you have.
  • Amount of Space to support the large amount of Graphics, etc., good.

Were not talking about performance were talking about lag that kills!

BlKnight 10-30-2002 04:50 AM

Not on topic but related:

When you buy a new computer it seems fast, a few years later it seems MUCH slower.

Is it just your persective or do older computers actually get slower than when first bought?

they don't normally become (noticeably) slower, but it may appear that way because new(er) applications (especially games with new technology) tend to require faster and better computer systems, which only makes sense

and obviously, seeing in action or using any of the faster ones should make the outdated/slower ones seem .. slower

I think after a few years, there is so much crap that clutters up your comp that it sure its slower ^^

it doesn't affect the system performance, but it affects playing experience and other things

to have good system performance, you need almost everything to be "good" or at least decent, because if you have the newest of all things that you mentioned and only a 25 MHz CPU, the components would be underused/wasted.. the same theory would apply to if for example, you had 512 KB video memory with no support for the common video technology, or a 100 RPM hard disk drive along with the rest of the components being "good"

ahh, try defragmenting or formatting your hard drive

Juron Pilo 10-30-2002 08:32 AM

it has nothing to do with computers... it has more to do with the faulty walkthrough images which slow down player movement=/

all I know is my PC rox im on a 56k and I lag like crazy.

TerrorBite 11-01-2002 03:46 PM

this is why I keep my bitrate up by pressing alt +4 (NOT F4), that way I can tell if my bandwidth is maxing out and if I should stay away from dungeons, it does help... and it lets me know when I'm not connecting so I can run for a hallway and hope that it connects again :P

in that case im never connected for very long. :p

Juron Pilo 11-02-2002 05:52 AM

I'm telling ya... its stefan's faulty coding=P

adam 02-18-2003 05:41 PM

And im telling ya, There should at the very least be a "recommended for broadband users" before you "PAY" to play g2k2. Some poor 28.8k user will log on and end up getting d/c'd all the time. :-( Or just plain womped. And that would be stealing is money, having not told him he needs a good connection to have an enjoyable experience.

Kaiser2 02-18-2003 08:32 PM

I got a good cable onnection, but there is still lag, it's just serverside lag, I guess, cuz I dont take damage, but the enemies do ;)

I live like 500 yards out of range for Cable/DSL, so that's kind of sucky for me, or else I'd already have it, some solution should exist for the massive lag bursts that occur

Juron Pilo 02-19-2003 08:43 AM

I think this is a really old topic right? well what I was saying isn't very applicable anymore.... spells only lag if your in them... not cuz their on screen... ANYWAYS... my real problem now is the SERVER seems to be slow... at least amongst the byond proelium group I host for I seem to have the best connection around and I'm definately not the only one with cable O.o

I have the same problem. There will be ping spikes that last up to 30 seconds .. the server stays up, but all NPCs stop.

thebluedagger 02-19-2003 04:19 PM

Not a good idea. Some servers are working on a turn-based system (Delteria wants me to make them one), but it isn't for 2k2. It has more of a spar feel to it now. My suggestion, get of AOL :P 56.6k's really suck x-x
I have a cable modem, and I do experience lag but generally nothing that would cause me death... and if bomy's are killing you, level up!

can't level up if they keep killing me :-)

My final suggestion is just to post general connection requirments. Saying 56k users may not get as good of an experience as cable users.

Juron Pilo 02-22-2003 06:40 AM

*snickers*
using the graal interface to make a turn-based server is a huge and utter waste of proccessing and resources! damn dude! that program I keep mentioning is far better for turn based battle than that(I'm just remembering the other game rule and hoping that since I'm technically talking about a kiddie type game language I'll get away with it). theres allready 100 dbz, dragon warrior, and final fantasy clones that accomplish this(to an extent)
