Test Server (Counter to the 'UC' concept)

Picture this:

A brilliant new playerworld is accepted as P2P..They go up, but..GASP! Their scripts don't work because they had no opportunity to test them in an NPC Server setting, people come, think to themselves 'Gee..This server sucks, the NPC's don't work..' quit, and never ever give it a second glance..Now you have another 0 population (1, if you count the server ;) ) playerworld, that is actually very good, but had a bad first impression, so to speak...

Solution? Most people would say 'Thats what UC servers were for..' But, unfortunately, that's kind of out of the question...So, what can you do?

How about this...Have one more 'official' server, except you need special accounts to log on...When a playerworld is accepted, give the owner a couple of accounts and passes that can log on to that server, including the 'owner' account..The owner account gets FTP, but not your normal FTP..While you are sharing this server with other owners that have been accepted, you can only access your portion of that servers FTP, and you can only hang out in your levels...

So for the cost of 1 more playerworld, you ensure that upcoming P2P servers can get their scripts working before being open to the public, and therefore increase the overall popularity of p2p servers in general...Thanks for your time

happyme 04-04-2002 11:30 AM

sounds reasonable :)

dragoonvenganc 04-04-2002 11:34 AM

why not just put your pw up and in like 3 days get it all fixed i know that a little bit of time but just pretty much dont let people play when it first goes up.. i dont think pw staff would have to much of a problem with that ... or would u guys

Xavier, Xavier....Read the scripting forum under what scripters need ;).The Ideas about this are good, its just that its very hard to do. It would be really hard to run different users off 1 server. You cannot create a new folder for a server and set rights. Graal does not open levels in those folders. Go to that other thread and you'll see what we have been discussing.

Yes it does, I have frolic divided up into many folders which contain levels. Most of the other folders are for people who are testing things. If you dont believe me, I'll post some snap shots.

Never worked on Andor. I believe you, thanx for the input.:)
Also it doesnt work on non-p2p servers probably due to no clientside to guide itself.

homeless1 04-04-2002 02:10 PM

Umm if I understand correctly, then non-p2p servers can do that to. All you have to do is mess with the folder config so levels can be loaded and tested that are stored in seperate folders. But again, thats only if I understood what your talking about correctly...lol.

Dustey 04-05-2002 07:00 AM

sounds like a good idea but if it doesnt work like you said then you rag on stefan for about 3 months then he should fix that eventually *on the other side you could be blacklisted and then banned;)*

or there is the legendary hidden server concept which would be cool too so only staff and high level rcs can come on for a week so you can actually fix it without players seeing it

mikepg 04-05-2002 07:58 AM

umm

How many times has this been discussed? like 100. It will never happen.
"They go up, but..GASP! Their scripts don't work because they had no opportunity to test them in an NPC Server setting"
...means they didnt know what the heck they were doing.... There shouldnt be 20 months of fixing stuff to make it playable online for an UC server...but that is the way it is.

I have lots of suggestions to fix this, but none will ever be taken into consideration...

My 1 suggestion that maybe...
move this topic to "Future Improvement"

How about not controling other peoples opinons? Other people can post what you want, its really none of your beezwax.

konidias 04-05-2002 08:59 AM

What is the point in this? All the people share one server to test? How can they get anything tested? FTP is only for graphics, ganis, sounds, and levels.. not server npcs and the like..

85% of the online work is making classes and online npcs.. not making sure your offline levels don't bug out.

So this idea is flushed down the can.

Hes telling the truth, I was testing Murasamune on it before my computer became so unstable I could test nothing...

Btw, cybnext, tommorrow I think you might see me on AIM or RC...my comp will hopefully be fixed, jsut waiting for UPS to deliver the motherboard.

Jinx 04-05-2002 01:15 PM

I think that when a server is accepted, it should go up as a UC server for ONE week maximum. During that week they can test their scripts and stuff. After that week they become a normal server.

Warcaptain 04-06-2002 02:10 AM

once a p2p server is accepted, it should get a private server, like 2k2 and 2k1 did, to test their stuff, without players seeing it all buggy and getting the wrong impression.

stefan cant even make a playerworld perfect offline and then whip it online, he never has, thats why he makes it offline, loads it up, and tests it privately to make sure it works perfect before releaseing it.

stefan its foolish to have us do something you cant do yourself.

Spanko 04-06-2002 02:27 AM

I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually possible for Stefan to non-pubically upload a playerworld, in a way that only the staff on that playerworld can actually see it in the server list.
After all, if that were not the case why would he ever have changed where you log in?
Though of course it might be the case that it's only so you can see how much time your account has left, it could easily be used for that which I said as well.

Er1c 04-06-2002 02:35 AM

Just add
NPC Code:
ghostmodefornotstaff=true

to your server's serveroptions and then anyone with less then a level one account will be a ghost (at least for the 2002 *******, it might be different, don't know...).

Er1c 04-06-2002 02:35 AM

wtf, why is G S E R V E R *ed out?

then they still see your stuff, and if you are still finding out things dont work right.....

or if your npc's play a MAJOR part in the look of your server.. etc

For once I do agree with him.

dragoonvenganc 04-06-2002 12:21 PM

stefan can u please say something

it is useless for us to talk about it if stefan never says anything

mikepg 04-07-2002 05:55 AM

umm

Like i said before...If you want stefan to see this, have a mod move it to future improvements (Where this has been asked about countless times), because he checks that forum, and it belongs there IMO.

Andor_Admin1 04-07-2002 07:47 AM

I tested the ghostmodefornotstaff=true thing, it does work.

there you go

if he doesnt talk, he figures we will stop and forget about it and forget how he is the only one getting to make superior servers, and why.

Glory 04-07-2002 02:13 PM

Corupt: I totally agree with warcaptian man that was plainly and honestly put I remember the first time one of my quests went online it was weird with some npcs cuz im constantly offline in the level editor and never test anything online but i hope this comes up as a consideration cuz i wouldnt want people to get a wrong impression on my server

95% of graal could agree and it wouldnt make a difference.

his servers come first, even though we could make just as much,or more money if we had the same opportunities he did.
or rather his scripters, as stefan doesnt do much other than add new things to help his scripters, on his servers, and the occasional script.

of cours thats what graal all is dumb one.

but he doesnt make levels or script hardly.

only code new thingsfor them.

so all this credit we give him for making great servers, should go to people like antago and er1c

Psyker 04-08-2002 04:53 AM

If only Stefan would respond,

If only Stefan would respond...

(to me.)

cell424 04-08-2002 08:26 AM

Simple fix, give a option for only the owner int he RC that allows u to change from a Hidden UC server to a Regular P2P Server.

dragoonvenganc 04-08-2002 10:48 AM

what would be great is if

ghostmodefornonstaff=true

would work

that would solve it there
they can look around what u have but now play or do anything
