ONE name for players

Look, if you will, at Everquest and Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot. Notice that the player is asked to enter a name for their character that then can never be changed? Well BANG, that's what any Graal RP server needs. Why? For many reasons.

1) Cuts down on stupid "GOKUVEGETA" names. They get one chance and if they use one of those names then they have it forcibly changed and can never change it back. No "oh, the admin is gone, now I can go back to my super-sweary nickname".

2) Allows for quests like "Go hunt down <playername>". If we make names unique (ie no two players with same name) then NPCs can place bounties on guys that killed them etc. It'd allow for some superfun.

3) A greater feeling that you control a fixed character rather than being able to change to suit the occasion. Thus enhances roleplaying.

Plus a couple of other benefits like allowing players to find and interact with one another better, but lists of three are always best. Anyway, maybe we could make it so that the player can change their name, but it means that they have to start their character all over again or something. Like an account reset.

As is often the case, this is mostly scriptable but there'd be huge holes in the system. What I'd like is a few basic commands to set a server-specific name and an option in serveroptions.txt that makes the server use this and disable setnick. Anyone agree with my thinking?

Falcor 01-29-2002 01:08 PM

Agreed, I made this setnick thing for Faheria, but maybe I should just disable it and make you only set your nickname at the begining (and only an admin can change it if need be).

If youd ever like to see it kai, tell me,

Thats exactly what I'm doing...hehe.

Slaktmaster 01-29-2002 02:47 PM

Good idea, if this idea get added people like me won't be running around with [PantZ admin] in their name. :p

Mosquito 01-29-2002 08:16 PM

You misspelt it under your name slaktmaster
it now says

Slaktmaster
PantZ adnim

;)

Oh, the irony. You misspelt the word "misspelt".

Mosquito 01-29-2002 08:21 PM

ROFL

Slaktmaster 01-30-2002 12:34 AM

It's intentional because I heard you can't use admin.

LOL no, the irony is that misspelt isn't even a word.. it's "misspelled"

konidias 01-30-2002 01:51 AM

Yeah the setnick thing can easily be disabled or changed into a system npc that pops up a name select window. I decided a while back that Oasis would have a place to choose your name, gender, race, and body colors (hair, skin, etc) and then you couldn't get them changed again.

I was thinking MAYBE there could be some official naming place, and some guy would change your name for a fee (doesn't have to be money) but then again, that's promoting people to change their names to something stupid.

Either way, if the RP server is watched over by admins properly, then there shouldn't be a big problem. :)

Fal rules <3

And lets not forget the words that cannot be used when setting your name (I removed the billions of swears for this post =P)

dbz,ssj,vegeta,goku,gohan,trunks,piccolo,goten,got enks,super,saiyan,saiya-jin,saiyajin,sephiroth,cloud,squall,zell,cell,buu, android 18......*swears go here*......

and since no special characters like ¶¯µ[£¤ etc will be available, there wont be any player with DB¯/_ or $$J etc =P

Now i dont think this is fare coz i started out as Crazedgolem (dumb i know) but why not have it so you must pay a fee to change your name and you cant change it more then ones in 24 hours??? i think thats only fare!

xanatos2003 01-30-2002 06:32 AM

ah another reason!

Because say you were on a guild, how would that work and even if you had to pay a fee that wouldnt be fare coz if you wanted to be on the guild for a war then take your tag off thats not exacly fare there needs to be a way that you can do it to put a tag on and off but nothing els unless you pay :-)

And a suggestion to keep your name the same is because if you ever wanted to have a name in graal, you best keep your nick name the same (little nooby hint):D

Falcor 01-30-2002 07:24 AM

You could always spell Asian names literally, Im sure names are Symbolic in Asia, I could be wrong but Asian writing isnt phenetic.

Faheria_GP2 01-30-2002 07:54 AM

of course you could use the roman symbols...

Tyhm 01-30-2002 09:43 AM

Remember Namingway?

TDK_RC6 01-30-2002 11:07 AM

hey kai, you dont mind if i use this on a server im working for do you??

Seems everybody else is already, so sure.

James 01-30-2002 11:46 AM

Great idea, and maybe it can stop people from being biased against people with those stupid names. Also like in EverQuest there are modes for showing that you are AFK. Like /afk on that would add AFK to your nick.

Falcor 01-30-2002 11:49 AM

its not like its a new idea, it has been in plenty other games =\

I wasn't suggesting otherwise. Indeed, I paid homage to the fact in the first sentence of the first post.

Oladahn 01-30-2002 03:58 PM

I was planning to implement exactly this idea on Pandora... if anyone cares. ;) Hopefully it will be scriptable.

TDK_RC6 01-30-2002 08:03 PM

its very scriptable

Kaimetsu 01-30-2002 09:18 PM

Indeed it is, but not without some rather large inefficiencies and the proviso that your standard name would get switched to your server-specific name every time you entered it (and then only a second or so after you've logged on). All in all, it'd be nicer if we could make it a feature of Graal itself, especially since there are lots of servers without overly competent scripters.

Falcor 01-30-2002 09:20 PM

A serveroptions to disable setnick would be largly apreciated =(

Mind if I quote?
But we also need to be able to set #n on free servers. :(

Falcor 01-30-2002 09:32 PM

thats a benifit of P2P =( it would have to be clientside for freeserver, and you could hack guilds that way

yes, cntrl+A is totally pointless!@ Lets add it on to our nicks too! in fact let's make big flashy arrow and big glowing neon signs that blink "AWAY!"..."AWAY!"

cntrl+A is good enough

setstring oldchat,#c;
setplayerprop #c,setnick FrogSlayerAss;
sleep .05;
setplayerprop #c,#s(oldchat);

works well

But would you ever expect to see anything like it on a professional game?

Falcor 01-31-2002 08:58 AM

When you have no options.....

But it would help for some sort of serveroptions to disable setnick on ATLEAST pay to play servers.

So you are saying you'd rather have a big stupid emoticon over a players head, rather than having 3 small letters in someones nickname?

Unless they changed nick within the 10 latest seconds, and it isn't very smooth...

Admins 01-31-2002 11:29 PM

Would be boring without being able to change the
nickname, imagine the amount of people wanting
to reset the account just because they hate their
name and want something else. It can make
things less dynamic, but there could be an option
setnickallowed=false for playerworlds that don't
want name changes.

Slaktmaster 01-31-2002 11:56 PM

Yes, that would be great. RP servers need that.

Could you please enable setplayerpropprop #n,nickname goes here; please?

Falcor 02-01-2002 05:14 AM

propprop?? lol

Yeah, disabling setnick would be better for RPing, And if you absolutly HAVE to change your name, I could posible make a command in an NPC that you can use once or twice a day.

Tyhm 02-01-2002 07:37 AM

I say go with a Namingway system.

You can change your name as many times as you like, but only in certain places, and probably for a fee, but regardless only via NPC. That way it doesn't look like such a hack, "setnick bill" is replaced with
NPC Code:
Enter your name:
A B C D E F G H a b c d e f g h

, etc. Or it would be if we had spiffy sign controls, but anyway. That'd be nice on NPCServ/P2P worlds anyway.
