Sceleria

Panic spread like wildfire. Collision was now imminent, they had been told. A massive ball of fire filling the skies, it drew nearer with each passing day, bringing with it almost certain death. First noticed by a child in the night sky, the people of Sceleria watched in horror as the unusually bright star grew larger, larger. The church did little to assuage the people. It was an omen, they said. The gods’ final judgement.

And so they waited in terror, not knowing just what lay ahead. Merchant ships from Bomboria reported unspeakable acts of sin on the mainland by panicked mobs. Monarchs were overthrown, villages were burning; murder and rape ran rampant. The star and the panic that accompanied it seemed to bring out nothing but the very worst of people. Thankful for their blessed seclusion from the mainland, the last few months were spent cowering on the island, away from the brutality.

Two days later, the star collided and everything changed.

Mothers clutched their babies to their breasts one last time as the people of the kingdom stood by the shore and waited to die.

The noise was deafening. Thousands of miles to the north, two celestial bodies struck each other with unprecedented force. Fire razed the land, killing everything it touched. Tremors from the impact caused massive earthquakes, leveling entire cities. From these earthquakes, massive tsunamis were formed. The waves sped without warning towards the island, and rose to unimaginable heights, towering highs above the tallest turrets of the castle. They paused, stoically, then crashed down furiously.

The castle toppled, swept away by the merciless waves. The ocean spilled over the island, toppling buildings like they were made of cards. Years of prosperity were ended cruelly by the wrath of the ocean; irreplaceable wisdom sunk beneath the sea. As the waves finally receded, little remained. There were few survivors. Food become scarce, shelter even more so. The life they struggled so desperately hard to hold onto was no life at all. A once prosperous, peaceful kingdom, they were reduced to a wandering tribe of barbaric nomads, stranded on a forgotten island with little hope of a better future.

On the mainlaind, life continued, albeit changed forever. From the ashes crawled an alien race, unlike anything ever imagined. They called themselves the bomies, and they became, begrudgingly, a functioning part of society. The cities were rebuilt, the kingdoms reformed, the damages undone. But Sceleria was slowly forgotten, a tragic casualty of the cursed disaster. Little more than a distant memory, it faded, lost to the ages.

Until now.

Author’s Note: I’ll provide an explanation (and, more than likely, defense) later; though I’m sure Marle will be more than happy to give a patently critical assessment. ;) Anyway, it really isn’t too difficult to understand, despite its obvious roughness. I know the way I wrote it is less than spectacular, so just go with it. I’ll smooth it out later. In other words — critique the idea, not the writing.

That wasn't what it was originally, but it's what it has become. For better or worse.

It began, a long time ago, on the can. At first, it was meant to be a history of 2k1, from a roleplaying viewpoint. Covering the bomy collisions, Zalactic labs, and the like. Eventually, I narrowed it down to the actual collision of the bomy planets, then fleshed it out into an actual character-driven short story about the days before the incident, and the aftermath. In the search for a protagonist, I became frustrated with designing characters from the current kingdoms, so designed one for story purposes.

One thing led to another, and I began to see the potential benefits of the kingdom I was designing, for purely roleplaying purposes. Instead of a flourishing, wealthy empire like all of the existing kingdoms, it was a struggling, impoverished race. The island provided both convienent seclusion from the non-roleplaying community, and a plausible, fairly well thought out story.

All of this occured while I was still in Dustari. At the time, I was perfectly content with the kingdom I belonged to, and shelved the idea accordingly. As time progressed, however, Dustari began going downhill at a rapid pace. Roleplaying screeched to a halt, participation dropped dramatically. That was when I began looking back on the original idea for Sceleria (then referred to as Invalesco), and taking it somewhat more seriously. I still, however, had decided to stick with Dustari, at least for the time being.

We all know what happened since then. It was only recently that I started taking the idea of actually submitting the kingdom seriously. And that's where Sceleria differs from the other wannabe kingdoms, like Kalmaria and Artareo. It was created for the sole purpose of roleplaying, and breathing life into the dying roleplaying community. It wasn't made so I could become the uber-leet super king. It was made because roleplaying on 2k1 can work. People just have to try. All I want to do is present them with the means to do so.

In that case, I'm changing the name.

Now, seriously. I want some honest, serious feedback. Excuse the redundancy of the previous sentence, if you will.

Lionel-Jonson 11-24-2001 08:08 AM

Ok, Sceleria sounds too much like a disease.

...Thanks. I still don't understand why you're leaving. :(

Xythar 11-24-2001 11:36 AM

Wow. My latest Dustari encounter has only motivated me more. It went something like this:

I arrived at Dustari's gates, requesting shelter, and assuring them I meant no harm. I was greeted by an angry mob all hacking away at me screaming "LEAVE GET OUT OMG." :( I know Marle's just getting Dustari on its feet again, but methinks she needs to scan people a little more carefully. :\

I'm trying to, while staying in the bounds of Antago's original story. The religion comment was slightly offhand, because while I don't want to make it a major aspect of the kingdom, it shouldn't be completely ignored. I'm treading on eggshells as it is, trying to keep it realistic without being blasphemous. ;)
