Castles Idea

Note: This is a repost from Graal Main Forum, from a while back. The majority of people seemed to like the idea, but I'm posting it again in the hopes that Future Improvement regulars (Thym, etc.) see it.

I was thinking back to an idea Brad had a while ago --- castles which different kingdoms could claim --- and it got me thinking. Why bother adding a Classic building with a few arbitrary additions, when you could take it to a whole new level completely?

As it is, all the kingdoms have a castle, which are occasionally attacked by other kingdoms. The things is, there's no real way of "beating" them there. Me and Nindaen can order all the Dustariians we can find to attack the Zormite Castle, and we can kill all the Zormites there, but in the end does it really matter? Zormites respawn, Dustariians respawn, and the process repeats itself until one side gets too bored to continue. It's one of the reasons Kingdom wars rarely work out, because there's no way to tell who the winner really is, and even if you lose there's no consequences.

So imagine this: Kingdoms build a castle in them for themselves. Kingdoms members, gather stone from quarries, carry it over to a pre-defined site (one per kingdom, to start off) and mash the D button real good to make a turret. Obviously, there would be no interiors; just outside levels accesible only to the Kingdom. Kingdoms than purchase, with gralat different defense systems --- cannons, those nifty arrow shooters, et cetera. Prices would be high enough to keep kingdoms from buying too many, but low enough to keep them accesible to people without thousands of gralat. 500 - 700 g for an average castle would be ample, I think.

Now get this. You build yourself a big old castle, buy all the neato defenses, and watch it burn to the ground. Other kingdoms can sneak over, and attack your castle. Using weapons either given to you automatically or purchased in the game, you attack the enemie's castle. The turret (or whatever) for each castle has a health meter. It reaches zero, then bye-bye wall. Destroy the castle, and you've just set your enemy back a good deal o' cash, and reputation. Of course, nothing stops them from doing the same to you. This way, it actually matters whether you bother defending your castle or not --- no more running away in the middle of a fight. Similarly, as soon as a soldier dies, they're taken away from the battle. No more respawning, ya cheaters.

It'd be hard to script, I'm certain, but I'm sure Kaimetsu or er1c could do it fairly easily. Hell, I could do is, but it would involve placing compus baddies around the level at random.

good idea but one major problem
say the zormites decide they wanna attack the dustaria castle and no dustaria members are on to defend it
it would just get completly ruined and cause a lot of complaining

D'oh.... We dealt with that, and I really don't want to retype all the ideas....

Anyway, you can go and find the actual thread, but basically what we figured was that at least 4 people from the kingdom going to be attacked had to be online before an attack. There were a bunch of other solutions to that problem too, but I'm very lazy. And laziness = not wanting to type them all.

Mabie you'd be able to have a LOT of auto defence like arrow Turrets or Remote bomb mines or somthin mabie even an NPC or 2 guarding the fort
