Detecting if an NPC is hidden

I'm using a custom chat system on Smallville and as a result, an NPC that has been hidden using the hide() function still displays chat text. I'm wondering if there's a function that detects if an NPC is hidden or not. /scripthelp doesn't really return anything helpful.
