Era KillStreaks

Hello Era,

Over the past week I have been working towards finishing the kill streak system.
Here is how it goes:

Web definition of killstreak:
This is a reward when you kill a certain amount of people in a row without dying.

Here is the current layout (subject to change):

3 kills - > Rapid Heal (Heal faster in beds for 2 minutes)
5 kills - > High Caliber (Do +10 damage weapon/melee for 1 minute)
7 kills - > Instant Heal (Heals 75% of your max HP, heals 10hp points every 2 seconds)
9 kills - > Extra Armor (75 armor)

9+ kills and receive a random killstreak of the above.

When you get it you will receive an icon in your HUD saying what ones are active.

Also,a broadcast message will be sent out to players:

Big thanks to Chris Vimes (cbk1994) for the GUI/HUD contribution to this project. ^^'

Now go get some kills!

I never really understood the concept of killstreaks. Why would you "reward" someone who is obviously on a roll and doesn't need the buff? Shouldn't the newer, less skilled players be the ones getting kill assistance? "Death streak" rewards always made more sense to me, in that regard. It seems more logical to me to reward higher skill with flair and gimmicks that they can see and show off, and the temporary stat bonuses to the people who actually need it to keep up (because they probably won't have cool things to show off in the first place).

I'm not criticizing the update, as I don't even play Era, and I'm talking about killstreak rewards in general, not just in regards to your update. Just wondering what the idea behind them was.

I was thinking the same thing.

Yeah cause wil soul wasnt OP enuff without faster healing, 75% hp refill, extra damage and extra armor...

The update is nice, except for the continuous bonuses after nine kills. Get rid of those. If you get to nine kills, cool. Even more stuff - even though it's only random - after that, though, is too much.

An option to disable these popups would be nice.

BlueMelon 08-27-2012 01:07 AM

Option was added under Display & Effects.
After the 9th kill, you get a random killstreak after every 2 kills.

Still way too much bonus stuff for people already dominating.

TheGodAngelo 08-27-2012 03:29 PM

Do you get some kind of reward for killing someone a killstreak?
it might be kind of alienating for newer players with all these doped up killing machines walking around.

Dragon551 08-27-2012 03:58 PM

HAY
when you disable pop ups you lose the HUD for ammo as well :(

This is a bug un-related to the killstreaks, its a bug with the HUD. We'll check that out.

Yah players keep freezing and having to click on the game again and again everytime someone gets a killstreak... annoyance.

bloodykiller 08-27-2012 05:57 PM

+10dmg is retarded.....i guess it's ok for melees but for guns it's bs
i like the healing aspect, although i can't judge if the number of kills required to earn each bonus is adequate

This does not happen at all. At least, its not from the killstreaks.

shrimps 08-28-2012 03:27 AM

From my experience the "click on the game problem" is from when someone updates some scripts on RC. o.o

This can be the cause sometimes, but isn't related in this case.

It's from when the notification GUI control is created. Graal is pretty dumb about GUI focus, and new GUIs steal focus automatically with no real way to prevent it. There are some tricks to get around it but they can be sort of unreliable, as you're seeing.

It does, sometimes.

Indeed. I'll see if I can find a nifty way to get around it though :p

Everytime the first responder changes, it changes back to the graal control. I've debugged it like 3 times and never found that behaviour. It must not happen alot then...

Looking back at the code, theoretically it's supposed to keep track of the current first responder and then return it to that (rather than GraalControl), but it's quirky. There are some creative ways around it. My recommendation would be to just create 10 of the notification bubbles on login, hide them, and then show them, resize them, etc. so that you're reusing hidden bubbles rather than constantly creating new ones.
