Merged your threads/posts together. The only way to learn is to keep practicing. Search through this forum for examples from different people. Here's how to do it and also a list of some people that are worth looking at:

Click on the search link on the top bar.
Click advanced search.
On the right side, type in a member's name (I'll list some you can look through).
Select "Find Threads Started by User"
On the long list of forum sections click "Level Design"
Then click the "Search Now" button.

Some names worth searching:
WanDaMan
King homer daStupid
DustyPorViva

Listing myself as "worth searching" would be a bit conceited :p.

WanDaMan 04-21-2012 07:51 PM

You're quite creative with your tiles so I'd recommend searching for Ducati_Link, Shadowless or Faheria_LAT3 ( mmmmkay ) as they all have unique styles.

Bayne_graal 04-21-2012 07:58 PM

well thanks... i guess i wanna learn to make my own unique style not copy other peoples levels to improve i just need to know how to fix my out sides

Tricxta 04-21-2012 10:35 PM

Just mix and match, you eventually hit upon a combination that's both nice and unique.

Bayne_graal 04-22-2012 12:27 AM

That is your guidance. You need to make full levels and post them up for people to critique. You won't learn or improve any other way.

Bayne_graal 04-22-2012 12:50 AM

well 2 and 4 are done.

Bayne_graal 04-22-2012 01:02 AM

xXziroXx 04-22-2012 01:07 AM

The first level is absolutely horrible in every way. Your insides aren't really worth mentioning at all. You do however have some pretty interesting stuff going on in that last level that you should build onto.

Bayne_graal 04-22-2012 01:17 AM

ok...

Ducati_Link 04-22-2012 07:19 AM

Okay.. lets try to give a review.

Pic 1.
I support creativity, but your need to try and keep perspective, and make it not look like a giant tile error. Here is a couple of examples I have on hand:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ati/messin.png

Pic 2, 3 & 4.
1. Look at perspective, again, does what you make.. make sense? If you were to walk into that room (as a person) how would it work? If you look at the tree tops, the north wall could make sense.. you are looking out a window, and looking at the tree tops. The south wall? Wont work. Here is a OLE (Online Level Editor) level I made with the N-Pulse housing system. Wouldnt work perfectly as a real level, but it shows perspective.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...i/2cd6cb50.png

2. All your rooms are very square shaped, and has no depth. You dont need a big inside, and just fill it in with floor tiles, because that is boring. Though you're arn't huge insides, they are still boring and lack depth. Mix up the shape, bring things into the room, try and make levels (depth) to it. here is a couple of examples of way to make shape, adding detailing, depth, and still being creative.

Pic 5.
I really have no idea whats going on in this level.. I'm not sure if it's meant to be a town, or a test level. If i'm honest, I dont like anything in this level. Take note from what I said about Pic 1, and if by chance it's a town.. here is a basic layout of a town picture I have.

Work on it, keep at it, and re-post your updates (IN THIS THREAD), and I will be happy to keep constructive criticism up.

Lao_Su2 04-23-2012 06:55 AM

Ducati, you are amazing.

maximus_asinus 04-25-2012 06:35 AM

Forgive my late reply, I just wanted to comment on the fact that as a level artist, I once attempted something very similar to your first screenshot as an attempt at some asian styled temple and I believe many others before me have as well.

As for critiquing...
  1. First level is an excellent attempt as building something outside the boundaries put in place by the default tileset. Do not attempt to expand on that particular style however, even at its best it could be done better with custom tiles.
  2. Second through fourth levels look to be an attempt at emulating the UN style of house interiors. I don't understand where this style even came from, I guess some people believed that the complexity of a level equaled quality (they were wrong). Truth is, you can make some great interior levels with what is provided (see Wan's work if you want examples).
  3. The last level I cannot really comment on since it looks like a test level, but I will emplore you, going forward make sure not to fall back on tree images (or any image) for quick tiling a level. For one, it is more stressful on the client, and for two it looks terrible when you actually take a closer inspection of the level.

Geno 04-28-2012 07:06 PM

get levels off servers and edit them.

Devil_Lord2 04-28-2012 10:30 PM

Don't name it "Rate my level", I was going to give a lot of them a 2/10 for creativity and that was it. The topic of the thread does not suggest I'd have to actually explain why, or give constructive criticism. All of these things one should want to know. I didn't come in to give critiques today. Because only rating is much easier and less time-consuming.

This shop was created on Dev Twaina last year and was never actually finished.

Also, the reason I don't like your Asian type buildings is because they either have no 3D looking perspective.
(Meaning they all look like they are flat on the ground and have no depth) or no siding to tell that the building sides are ending..

Mine was supposed to be a shop, but I think the inside is a little too big (Right now unless it were more filled) and it is probably better to remake some of the tiles.

The only thing going for you is I don't see many people trying it, and you did.
Everything else needs improvement, but I've only come in to rate. However, having the pleasure to actually know you and work beside you (which I didn't read the name of who posted this when I came in) I don't want to only rate your levels so I won't rate, and I do not have time to tell you exactly what is wrong and what could change.

maximus_asinus 04-29-2012 03:40 AM

Those levels are perfect examples why you should not pursue Asian styled buildings with the default tile set. Actually do not try to pursue any of those examples. I am seriously Googling to find a reference you might have used for that house Devil, I can't see how that building could stand on its own. Also your building suffers for various perspective issues.

Ducati_Link 04-29-2012 05:13 AM

This is quite embarrassing, but I made this a very very long time ago.. but it was my kinda attempt at a Asian style house. and the detailing is an eyesore, I know.

Devil_Lord2 05-14-2012 05:57 AM

Honestly, I didn't have a need for references but if you'd like to have one, check asian building, or oriental buildings.

I would like to know why exactly you do not like the perspective though.
I see nothing wrong with my level so far, unless you actually give me good criticism as to why it isn't right. I am not sure I could do better with Dev Twaina's tileset, and I still find it creative and nice looking for a shop. :]

I like the fact that you tried doing both sand and water, and I don't think many people try that, or I don't see it often.. But I do see many errors... lol I love the plant bushes... lmao

Since it is a really old level I won't comment on what isn't so good..

Sorry for my late reply, I didn't know there was one..
