Inspiration

I'm currently commissioned for a graphics job and I need some inspiration. I need to see some amazing looking dungeons, specifically the walls. Mostly I'm interested in structure and design, for example arches, pillars and so on. Right now I'm drawing a blank, and some top favorites such as SD3 and Chrono Trigger don't really have amazing looking dungeon interiors.

Can anyone help me out? It doesn't necessarily have to be 2D, 3D is fine too if I can see the walls clearly.

Anything can be a dungeon if you build it right.

Tricxta 01-28-2012 06:04 AM

I kinda like the idea runescape has with there interiors:

http://www.classifiedsduniya.com/wp-...12/559577.jpeg

They definately have a good idea, not that I'm a fan of the game because of the multiple gameplay changes. Another good reference would be skyrim:

Especially for layout.

edit:soz images aren't working o_0 so I left you the urls

You might find some useful from Mother 3, you can download all the map images here

Demisis_P2P 01-28-2012 10:32 AM

I'd say Torchlight but the dungeons in it don't really have walls.

Also check out .hack//infection if you haven't ever played it. As far as I can remember it had a lot of different randomly generated dungeons.

my 2 cents what ive done in the past is look at Metal slug maps. they have a VAST amount of terrains and settings.

you can find them on google metal slug resource sites. each map is 100% pixel art and one very long horizontal image.

they are gods of pixel art.

in the RPG maker community they call tileset "chipsets" and ive noticed tom has done this before when he made a wooden type indoor bedroom room tileset. one day he magically got 5x better. :D

either way im not against recycling GFX from rpg makers beacause they are there for people to use in their games free.

It screams it yet you've provided no proof. Since Tom is a very reputable artist, you should back your accusations up with proof before you scream plagiarism.

okay well i happen to have these chests in my image folder + type rpg maker XP chests in google images.

http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/...sss/chest2.png

lets take that chest for expamle, the first thing i noticed is 3 edits, midle stripe(check link for horrizontal striped chest), verticle stripe and the lock.

A. that strike circled doesnt make sence to me light source wise. if you zoom in its acutally just the same lines copy pasted over eachother.

B. i took thel liberty of take that line away now its the exact same size as all the other chests vertically and horizontally.

C. I did a quick copy paste to increase the size of the bright spot ontop of chests and a quick copy paste to increase the size of the lock.

coincidence? :p

a link i on google images to a pile of nice chests. i like the purple one.
http://rmxpunlimited.net/forums/uplo...1_57_19583.png
http://images.brighthub.com/cc/7/cc7...04ef_large.jpg(that purple is familliar)

this was a 5 min search and edit plus the addition of toms personal edits to make it look more unique. ive also seen the chair things before, at least the wood on RPG maker and other graal tileset.
notice how all the gfx in the image showing the level seem to have slight different styles all around.

DustyPorViva 03-09-2012 04:04 AM

Just because something looks similar does not mean it's stolen. Also why the hell does your diagram make no sense? Why couldn't you just put one side labelled Tom, and the other side labelled whoever you're comparing to?

Reorganized your case so I can actually understand it and then I'll see what I think.

if you ask me its pretty clear. :asleep:

the very top image is thoms creation apparantly.

A. is demonstrating its the exact same size horizontally plus the stripe that makes no sence shading wise.

B. is without the stripe now its the exact same size all around to slightly increase the lock part and the large stripe on the top. so it fits graal a bit better.

c. a two second copy paste job without even using any edits at all with the pencil.

the link i provided in google images seems to have a purple chest just like thoms. plus the chest with the center verticle stripe.
http://rmxpunlimited.net/forums/uplo...1_57_19583.png
http://images.brighthub.com/cc/7/cc7...04ef_large.jpg
plus if you zoom in all around its the same shading style.... added the fact that the LARGE stripe on the top fo the chests also is quite big. this shows me the parts of the chests that look wierd are the edits.

i can go find more

How about communicating what you see more clearly? I believe it's highly arrogant of one to state something and then not explain it properly for others to understand, we're all different people.

Show the following.

Tom's "Work" you are accusing of theft
The original work in question

and finally...

The comparison of the two things above, showing where they are exactly the same.

DustyPorViva 03-09-2012 04:10 AM

No it's not because I can't tell wtf is going on in your little diagram. What graphics are whose? Also you can't expect me to examine pixel art that's been blown up with a filter.

maximus_asinus 03-09-2012 04:16 AM

if I am looking at your diagram correctly (not entirely certain because it is confusing as hell) you edited Tim's chest and your source's chest until they looked similar. That isn't exactly concrete there buddy.

geneticfrog 03-09-2012 04:17 AM

all the chests that arent purple in gold are made by RPG maker XP.

all i did was use the crop tool and copy paste in a reverse fashion he would have used to make the chest larger to fit graal. like i said the smaller bright stripe under the big bright stripe is totally out of place. if you remove that copy pasted partthen yousee ALL the chests are all the EXACT same size..

all the hints are there.

the purple and gold chest is thoms(beside the same color of purple one in the google image)...... all the other are RPG makers how is that so complicated.

the chests around A B and C are jsut to compare how they are identicle in size. once youremove 3 line of pixels that are copy pasted over eachother to make it slightly taller but made no sence shading wise lol....

simple....

DustyPorViva 03-09-2012 04:31 AM

Here's what you can do. Take Tom's graphic, put it on one side of an image. Unedited, unaltered, not zoomed it. Take the other graphic that you think he stole it from. Put it on the OTHER side of the image. Label them appropriately. Let US draw the conclusions.

I also find it funny that you accuse the above graphics of being stolen but then when confronted pull entirely different graphics for comparison.

Either way, do this so I can actually see what the hell you're going on about.

NOTE: the red chest comes in ALL colors and has been used in RPG community FOR AGES. simply type rpg maker chests in google images or search to find them.

1. originals. note: the red chest is RPG maker and comes in ALL colors and many edits of it.
2. EXACT same side horizontal.
3. random stripe of shading that makes no sence to be there unless its copy pasted.
4. once that stripe is gone the purple shades blend PERFECTLY. the shade before that stripe and the one after are meant for eachother, zoom in to see it closer.
5. once that stripe from 4 is gone now all of a sudden both chests match horizontally AND vertically.
6. more perfectly matching features.
7. the red RPG chest is over thoms chest.

its pretty clear that its an edit.

If i take an image you made and changed the color + resized a few things and added a small edit in birhgtness so it matches graal light source, is it really my creation?
here are some images from google search example of the other versions of the chest. ALL OF THEM ARE RPG MAKER.

http://rmxpunlimited.net/forums/uplo...1_57_19583.png
NOTE THE ONE BELLOW WAS SAVED IN JPEG BY THE HOST WHO KNOWS WHY.
http://images.brighthub.com/cc/7/cc7...04ef_large.jpg
pretty purple chest and the metal one with the unique idea of adding a middle stripe of metal.

you know im right.

salesman 03-09-2012 05:39 AM

is it seriously that hard to just provide two images?

DustyPorViva 03-09-2012 05:43 AM

Dammit, why is it so blurry? Also you still haven't said which is Tom's and which isn't. I'm going to assume from what you're writing that the red chest is the one that isn't Tom's, however.

Okay, so we're getting somewhere here... unfortunately for you it's a very abrupt stop.

Quote:

2. EXACT same side horizontal.
Really? You don't say? They're 32 pixels wide? This is such an uncommon occurrence... 32x32 is a common size. In fact every single chest I have ever drawn is 32 pixels wide.
Quote:

3. random stripe of shading that makes no sence to be there unless its copy pasted.
See this is the problem with your logic. You don't understand it therefor it MUST be stolen. No. The strip of highlight makes sense because the chest is metallic. Metallic items look more metallic with strong highlights against dark shades. It creates contrast. Something he did fairly well.

Quote:

4. once that stripe is gone the purple shades blend PERFECTLY. zoom in to see it closer.
I can't zoom in because whatever the hell you did means almost all the pixel clarity is lost. Either way from what I can see they're still not the same. In fact the shading styles are so totally different I'm not even sure why this is even being brought up.

Quote:

5. once that stripe from 4 is gone now all of a sudden both chests match horizontally AND vertically.
Of course it matches the size vertically. You ****ing cropped it down until it was the same size and then removed everything that made them look different.

Quote:

7. the red RPG chest is over thoms chest.
Yet they still don't look ANYTHING ALIKE. Just because something looks somewhat vaguely familiar does not mean it's stolen.

Again, post the damn raw images without you ****ing it up and resizing and blurring it so I can actually show you in detail how wrong you are.

geneticfrog 03-09-2012 05:43 AM

so i guess if i took the outline of a GFX and recolored/ resized it then....

i guess u never stole a gFX.

cool to know, thanks.

the evidence is there, you just are defending a friend now its pretty clear. either way i can bring up more examples but i fear his friends will come to his defence again so its quite useless.

but in the end thom knows how RPG maker influenced him in pixel art anyway.

obviously his drawing pad/photoshop stuff is original to him.

Post the original damn image. If you can't find an image that isn't blurred to hell then pick another one since you seem to think Tom does this all the time(and brought up the accusations up on two totally different images then the ones you're claiming now).

And the ****ing outline isn't even the same. In fact it's a damn chest. A box. There isn't much possibilities for outlines. I could probably find a chest of mines that looks just as similar.

You're making these idiotic accusations and then tossing blurry images as proof with claims that make no sense.

BRING MORE EVIDENCE. Why are you scared of 'friends' defending him if they're doing so with logic and proof? I'm not defending him because he's a friend. I'm simply saying that your claims make no ****ing sense.

"OMG this chest... looks like ANOTHER CHEST. It's like omg... who would think two chests could look vaguely similar!?"

Two totally different styles with a common outline...but I'd image that tends to happen when whatever you're drawing has the shape of a rectangle!

Whether it's a modification of something else or totally original, those two chests are not identical or even close to identical.

Also, it doesn't matter what image you start out with. It's the final product that matters.

do they have to be?

remember in your thread about the tile set how those trees from the RPG maker game looks like the trees dusti made? while they are acutally inspired/edited from the OOOLD rpg maker trees.

it doesn't have to be identicle to be edited.

Here's the problem with this joke.

Your "creation" is a blatant form of plagiarism. It can actually be identified as a mild modification.

From what Salesman finally did for us, I can see no plagiarism has been committed, they're both chests and resemble chests, not each other as concepts.

Finally
Kindly shut the **** up.

DustyPorViva 03-09-2012 06:01 AM

Tom's is pixel art. The one you're claiming he stole isn't even pixel art. How could he have stolen it? He didn't modify it at all because modifying it would have meant erasing it all and starting over. Even if he was inspired by the chest that's okay because inspiration is fine. Theft is not.

Also it's A GOD DAMN CHEST. ALMOST ALL CHESTS LOOK THE SAME. I just made a chest for a client and you know what? It looked like the wooden chest in the image you posted because ALL WOODEN CHESTS LOOK IDENTICAL.

Here I'll break it down for you. The chest you said Tom stole it from? Guess what. If I take your little process I can make it look like IT was stolen from any number of other chests floating around on the internet too. In fact the red one looks a lot like the chests in Zelda.

I'm done with this because I feel even if I broke down every single pixel in the images and told you why they're not stolen or in fact even referenced in any way you wouldn't get it. I normally don't say this but kindly gtfo out of my thread with your off-topic bull****.

I'm going to humor myself and try to approach this with reason and facts instead of bull****ting around with nonsense and claiming that anyone who opposes me does so because they're friends and yada yada and other half-assed attempts to justify myself.

1)
Here I'm going to take both chests and completely remove all shading to reveal the overall shape and design of the chest.
http://i.imgur.com/ZJRPa.png
I don't see how these look even remotely similar.

2) You said Tom's chests is not 32x32 and it clearly is. However the chest YOU'RE defending does NOT fit into 32x32, but they tried to anyways. It ends up missing an entire pixel of outline on the left side.

3) Let's look at the finer details of the artwork.
http://i.imgur.com/3oEZg.png
Tom's chest is mostly boring, to be completely honest. Its shading is pretty typical and nothing really makes me think it's really that interesting. However if you look at the metal of the red chest you'll see a very distinct difference. The shadows jump STRAIGHT to the darkest shade. This creates a visible line of contrast often seen in metals(because metals often reflect silhouettes of their surroundings). Tom's shading on his metal is pretty boring, again. Just goes from bright highlights to a smooth shadow with buffers all the way down. Also the red chest has a visible highlight going up the entire side of the chest. This is something again, Tom's metal lacks.

4) Again, lets look at the details
http://i.imgur.com/dtzNU.png
Tom's chest took a very cartoony and stylistic approach to highlighting the corner of the chest. Here he inserts a very bright square to make the corners 'pop.' This is not something that makes sense as far as how light really works but it's a stylistic decision. The point is again, you do not see this very bright pop in the corner of the red chest.

5) Let's look at the overall shading technique that you apparently were trying to bring up before.
http://i.imgur.com/BTqha.png
First, I will say that I'm not sure where you're expecting some magnificant difference in how they're shaded. First you criticize him for inserting a highlight that 'makes no sense' but using that very logic it wouldn't make sense for the shading of two chests depicting the same shape to NOT look the same. They both feature a cylindrical top therefor they will be dark at the bottom and they will become lighter towards the top. This is 101 stuff. However I will debunk more anyways. First, they invoke two completely different visual feelings. Tom's is again somewhat boring. It features no strong highlight on the actual chest(not the metallic border) so looks very dull and non-metallic. This is different from the chest on the right because its chest has a strong highlight that contrasts strongly and creates a visual pop giving the impression that it is metal. The borders of Tom's chest drops no shadow on the object itself, while the red chest has black drops on the right side of the metal borders that give the impression of a shadow.

6) Finally, Tom's chest is much more cartoony. It features obvious black outlines not only on the exterior but interior. It also has much simpler shading and a dull appearance. The red chest actually has no clear distinctive outlines, on the exterior or interior. The coloring/shading of the chest often bleeds over into the outlines, or they are selectively erased(for example on the LEFT side of the metallic borders there are no outlines, to simulate light from that side, while on the RIGHT side there are clear outlines, but they end up looking like shadows). And the chest on the right also lets the content break the outline to provide more depth.
http://i.imgur.com/6vNEp.png
You'll also notice Tim used an abnormal color to cast a shadow under the keyhole -- purple. First it implies a limited palette, something the red chest does not have and two purple compliments yellow/gold. Either way, again, it's something not seen in the red chest.

Final conclusion? They both look like chests because they're both chests.

geneticfrog 03-09-2012 06:01 AM
