Disable GS1 in PMs

I'm sick of people sending me messages like
Quote:

Yeah, I'm #1!
and getting
Quote:

Yeah, I'm sword3.png!
Does anyone even use the message codes?

Switch 07-28-2010 06:43 AM

kia345 07-28-2010 06:52 AM

xXziroXx 07-28-2010 07:30 AM

Yeah, quite a lot of people do, and far from all for bad reasons. You can make a lot of masses about selling/trading something (just an example) more personal with clever use of them.

If someone abuses them, punish the induvidual - no reason to remove the function.

TSAdmin 07-28-2010 08:07 AM

Use the wordfilter and filter them. When I was manager, I put them in there. If someone's removed them, that's easily reversible.

cbk1994 07-28-2010 08:31 AM

They are in the word filter. I don't care about people abusing them, I'm talking about stuff like "#1" being replaced with the player's sword. No one uses that.

Ahh, I think I understand your point now. It's not about the abuse, nor about the "clever uses" they do have. It's about the fact that if someone puts say #1, #2, #3, etc then they get converted (Or, in the event they are filtered from PMs, ignored and rejected). In that point of view, there is definite conflict there.

Crow 07-28-2010 12:24 PM

Simple:
Keep #n, maybe #a, and ditch the rest.

Crono 07-28-2010 12:54 PM

change #1 to #sword or something etc

Soala 07-28-2010 01:17 PM

use swords on era, problem solved.

nah I agree, can be quite annoying I think.

why would having that exist in PMs even be necessary?

This I support.

Loriel 07-28-2010 05:06 PM

So you really suggest that putting #n/#a into a PM makes it more personal?

It can make marketing mass messages more fun, if used correctly, and if people actually try to do it. Not the boring old "Selling xyz; Buying abc" thing, but maybe something along the lines of:

"Hello, #n!
I know what you need. More firepower! How about a nice M60? Unfortunately, the market price of that is quite high. But if you buy one from me, you can save 20%! You better not take too long deciding, because I don't have many left.

Bob"

Now isn't that awesome?

I'm more likely to ignore that than "buy xyz". If I'm going to be playing in Graal's silly economy, I'm going to do just that. No one wants to read three lines of exposition before buying guns.

ed; it's the equivalent of telemarketers. and telemarketers suck.

You seem to be missing the point entirely, or you're just arguing for arguments sake. Nobody said you would have to "play in Graal's silly economy", nor that you should pay any more or less attention to three lines of exposition than you would to random crap. What Crow stated is one of the ways it can be used in a more-helpful-than-spam way.

Hiro 07-28-2010 06:38 PM

more important would disabling HTML in PMs

But what Crow said is not helpful, and actually acts as spam, turning a quality mass (that once straight and to the point declared what it's about) into some trivial mass of words and insincere personal interest. My point about the "silly economy" was an accurate representation of the people who would be interested in a buying/selling mass. They don't care about all the words surrounding the item being purchased or sold, and using scripts to emulate someone's name is even less direct than not pointing it to a specific person.

I think something in serveroptions would be great here, like:
allowpmmessagecodes = false/true
If its true you can also limit whats used by:
limitpmmessagecodesto = #n,#a

That way servers can decide if they want to use message codes and they can define what codes they want to be able to use.
