"Hi-def" Link to the Past

1 Attachment(s)
Sup. Haven't really been much into pixel art lately as I've been distracted a lot. However, got a little bored and started this little thing.

Goal is to 2x the LttP tileset and then remake it. It is not intended(and never will be) to actually be used in Graal.

So far all I've done is a tree. I had a hell'a'va hard time with the trunk, and not to mention the tree top itself was very easy.

Attachment 51359

More to come, hopefully!

Crono 07-12-2010 12:01 AM

wouldnt you have to increase the resolution? or are you just trying to refine its detail?

Well it's twice the resolution of the original graphics, which is the same resolution as Graal. Dunno if that's what you mean. However, with twice the resolution there is a lot of "blank spaces" you have to fill in, so I'm also having to add and redefine the details that were absent from the low resolution.

Looks super. I await Graal Classic HD.

WhiteDragon 07-12-2010 02:18 AM

Wow, that trunk is beautiful.

Sky 07-12-2010 02:43 AM

Looks pretty fly, actually...what you should do is "hack" your own lttp rom and release a dusty style one. :)

Loriel 07-12-2010 03:26 AM

Why not 4x it while you are at it, resolutions are easily higher than two times what lttp was designed for.

Because it's still pixel art for me and not digital painting like the Street Fighter sprites.

4x for pixel art is a huge workload.

Soala 07-12-2010 12:33 PM

Still not a huge fan of the "leaves", but that trunk's absolutely great.
Good job, again and again :)

Dnegel 07-12-2010 03:38 PM

Wow, the trunk of the tree looks amazing.

Keep em' coming. ^^

Fulg0reSama 07-12-2010 06:06 PM

Impressed as always Dusty. Keep it up.

I think it'd be a crime to change something as distinctive as the tree top :)

Indeed! :) Nice work, keep it up please. This is very nice. Maybe you can contribute this to some Zelda fan game?

Like Graal? :p

Elk 07-12-2010 06:58 PM

There is a 2x ALttP tileset already
Angelu made it some years ago

I plan to take mines in a different direction, however.

Graal couldn't use them due to copyright, but Nintendo doesn't seem to fight non-commercial Zelda fan games.

That was not a direct ALttP copy. Was meant for another project, actually. Thought you knew.

DustyPorViva 07-19-2010 03:34 AM

Progress is slower than slow! Every attempt I make ends up with a headache because this isn't quite as easy as I thought. Of course, the original tileset was made and optimized for the limited SNES(doubly limited, given that each tile color palette is halved to better support the large world LttP introduced). Thus shapes and pixel clusters don't exactly given much room for interpretation. Looking deep at them and trying to make anything out of them results in hitting a wall because they don't make a lot of sense.

Anyways:

The head is proving to be a bit of a problem as well. Some problems include the hair being, well... pink. Though I doubt I'll change that since I'm not looking to change the looks, just make them look "newer." Also, hat and tunic are different colors, wtf? I don't know if I should keep it like that or make them match.

Soala 07-19-2010 03:37 AM

Looks good so far. About that hat, you should make it match the tunic, I never knew myself why they made it in a different green tone, a one-tone outfit looks cooler imo.

You mean Atlantis' current tileset?

You mean Atlantis' current tileset?

No...Atlantis didn't use Angelu's ALttP tileset

This general thing here, Dusty, is a fight between visual similarities and interpretations I think

And Crow, Angelu made one in secret like 3-4 years ago or so...idk, not completed but he tried

I've visited Atlantis about 2 weeks ago and it was using a nice refined ALttP tileset, and I can perfectly recognize Angelu's style. He was even on RC there.

You should go ahead and post the tileset :P

Oh you mean the original ALttP's? I believe you can find pretty much everything on google =P

No I meant Angelu's original LttP tileset. It's substantially different than what Atlantis(and the one you posted) is using right now.

Well I guess I've never seen it, if there is an older version from Angelu.

James 07-19-2010 06:35 AM

wow nice job dusty and angelu should have finished that -- it's epic.

Angelu barely worked on that. Mostly Nitron and me, if I remember correctly. You failed :p

@ Elk: If we're talking about the same tiles, they were made for, you know, something.

Edit: And here's the tileset I believe some people are talking about. Lossy, so nobody will even think about using this anywhere, sorry.

That won't stop them. Bet it turns up on a UC server in less than a week.

It's not like they'd be able to use it anyway. Some of the tiles are just copied from ALttP and increased in resolution, then refined. Also, with the JPG I provided, it would just look stupid :p

Dude you're like the only one I didn't see that much work from, so I could barely tell this or that is from you. Good job I guess, all tiles look awesome :)

I'm not exactly a pixel artist anyway. I just did minor fix-ups and some other small tiles :p

A 3rd version ?!

DustyPorViva 07-19-2010 05:53 PM

Gotta go out so I can't finish this right now.
http://i27.tinypic.com/2qbag5e.jpg

A little concerned about the noise/contrast, but I'll see how it works out first.

Not enjoying either of these if I'm honest. They're not at the same standard as the tree. The table has lost its original charm and has turned flat and square, as opposed to the tree that was brought more to life.

DustyPorViva 07-19-2010 11:32 PM

I'll admit it's a bit more square but square doesn't necessarily mean bad. I'm trying to keep to the shape as much as possible, but it was a decision I made based on the design I was going with. I ended up rounding it off anyways. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by lost charm.

Noise and busyness seems to be an issue here, and I'm going to try to resolve it. Mostly with the floor, however. I may lessen the detail going on with the table, though.
