GDT and Testbed forum sections

Forum sections for the GDT and Testbed.

Thoughts?

Soala 02-28-2010 01:37 AM

The GDT is currently holding a private forum section, but I guess a public forum section for it would maybe have an use.
Not sure about the Testbed section to be honest, considering those forums already have all kind of sections to help anyone (graphics, levels, etc..)

cbk1994 02-28-2010 01:38 AM

I agree with GDT but what would a testbed forum section be used for?

fowlplay4 02-28-2010 01:41 AM

Testbed could have a link to a thread of information like Era does with it's Wiki under it's sub-forum.

Chompy 02-28-2010 01:41 AM

I'm of course talking about public forum sections.

If there was public sections for both of them, it would be much easier and organized to release news and information. The testbed section would of course be aimed at questions about testbed in general, suggestions, information and etc. GDT section could for example include threads like http://forums.graalonline.com/forums....php?p=1559501 and such

Well I agree for the GDT public section but less for Testbed.
If people see an use then I'm all for it.

As the Testbed is primarily for scripting, all that should be done is this:
Get rid of useless stickies in NPC Scripting, and have these two: "Advice" and "Test Your GS2 Here"

Where the second one would just provide instructions to testbed etc.

Chompy 02-28-2010 01:56 AM

I'd rather see something like this for Testbed, as Jerret stated:

A well documented wiki-article with all the information needed, and also a link as stated above (:

Agreed. ^^

I think that we should find somewhere in the existing forums. There are already very many forums. Maybe GDT things can go in the PWA forums because isn't the GDT an extension of the PWA?

A subforum in the PWA section sounds fine.
And yes, the GDT is a subdivision/extension of the PWA.

Except that the PWA forums are not accessible to everyone, hence the GDT forums would also not be open to the public.

This is open to the public isn't it?

That's the PWA tryout forum...

Hiro 02-28-2010 11:27 PM

one of the functions of the GDT is, "Helping those who need it. That means being in the front line when people need your help." so as nice as IRC is and all, a public forum where people could request help would be nice

salesman 02-28-2010 11:29 PM

people can just request help in any of the dev forums...

Exactly what I was thinking, which is pretty much all the public GDT forum would be used for anyway. Discussion about the GDT is Graal related and would go down in the Graal related forum too so...

WhiteDragon 03-01-2010 12:21 AM

Yes. Even though the GDT has the role of helping people, that doesn't mean they need their own venue to do so. Help people wherever they are already asking for help.

Regarding public discussion of GDT, I don't see the need for a new forum for this. Threads could just go in the Graal Main Forum as they currently are. I haven't seen any disadvantages to this.

For internal GDT discussion, I think a private forum (PWA members, GDT members and possibly server staff) would be the best method in order to streamline discussion and focus on work rather than get lost in "what the best way to do" one thing or another is.

Overall, too much categorization can make things harder to find rather than easier to find, and I think the Graal forums are already a bit too split up for the amount of information in them, so making more forums should most likely be avoided.

adam 03-01-2010 12:35 AM

Yeah, a separate GDT forum would be deconstructive, spreading out the questions and answers to different parts of the forum, the GDT are forum members and are more able to answer questions already asked in the given development forums. Posts are more likely to be overlooked if they are spread out any more than they are already. In fact merging the scripting subforums except for Code Gallery may be very helpful. Also a sticky with Testbed information in it.

Loriel 03-01-2010 12:39 AM

Maybe irc would be better to get help in without all those people espousing hateful extreme-rightwing viewpoints in it

At least people in it keeps it from dying like #gscript.

Hiro 03-01-2010 01:02 AM

well you could also condense the current help forums into one forum, creating one giant help section instead of the current spread out one, and just give it to the GDT to moderate. instead of having it be a subsection in another forum, make it the larger forum with the subsections for help in different areas (or something)

honestly it's fine the way it is now, but if you were to make it happen i could see that being the viable option

#gscript had plenty of people before it died for reasons not really including not having enough people!

When the GDT was set up initially, Stefan said he wanted them to discuss projects publicly on the development forums. Because there are also discussions where public input really isn't needed and often just makes it more difficult to get things done, they have access to global/staff connect. This forum has had its uses changed a couple of times while experimenting but we've settled on it only being available to the GDT and other global staff. It was set up for managers and dev admins to have access but this created huge logistics problems of adding/removing people non stop.

Any person requesting dev advice or help can easily ask for it on the dev forums/irc/testbed or in game. I really see no reason to set up a seperate public forum for GDT since basically the development forums do the exact same thing.
