CTF is baaaaack

That's right folks!

Today the first unofficial test of ctf was played on Classic. It was 3v3 and a fairly close game, though a bit laggy for some people. Overall I thought it was alright, but it was good to knock the rust off a bit.

And no, this does not mean I will be hosting a game of CTF whenever people ask me to. I might from time to time when Thor is on to check things, but no random games throughout the day.

For anyone who played in the game, any thoughts?

For everyone, what changes from 'old' ctf would you like to see, if any?

LordSquirt 12-23-2009 03:09 AM

Like you said it was laggy. Would like to see that fixed, other than that it was great game and I think the score was 5-4.

Deophite18 12-23-2009 03:14 AM

Didn't like it. Way to laggy unless i used hidenicks. Also I guess the movement is a lot different. I kept falling in the water when I used moves that used to not put me in water. It was like starting over from scratch having to learn how it all works so I dont fall in everytime i go around someone.

6 months down and back to ctf

DustyPorViva 12-23-2009 03:34 AM

From what I tested the other day, the movement didn't seem to mimic default at all. No idea of the HD, but the movement seemed... well honestly it was horrible. Also don't have a clue how you're detecting water and such, either... but if the rest of the movement reflected it at all, I would guess it wasn't very accurate.

EclipsedAngel 12-30-2009 08:05 AM

But is it back with attack? And is it just Sumo CTF?
If I wanted to fall into water I'd go into a swimming pool.

The system was actually made for any type of "team" event. We already have a ton of different CTF types up and running, and other team events are in the works.

The main purpose of doing this now was so we can pump out events as fast as possible in the future when we are in our main development cycle.

Also, regarding the lag, a number of optimizations have been made so it should be better the next time around -- more tests to come.

Let's play!

BlackSolider 01-14-2010 01:31 AM

Good news!

CTF has seen the addition of small, large, future, and indoor2 gametypes from what I recall.

On a side note, the less popular Battlegrounds has been added.

Hopefully more testing of these events will occur in the future, especially when I get back to college in a week or so and thus my schedule is far more open.

I assume they're all prettied up now with the gameplay faults panned out? That's cool if they are.

Usually I thought it was the other way around.

Only one way to find out.

Mark Sir Link 01-14-2010 08:02 AM

with how into this crap alot of people get, I can't believe no one has complained about the inherent advantage/disadvantage of a horizontally laid out map.

ffcmike 01-24-2010 05:42 AM

Interesting turn of events tonight, each different currently available game-type of CTF has been hosted, aswell as Battlegrounds twice, it appears as if we have managed to thoroughly reduce CPU useage which was most important of all.
The Team Event system itself runs smoothly in most cases though i've discovered just a couple small bugs which should be easy to fix.

Apart from that there are perhaps a few event specific issues to look into and possibly adjust, it seems as if it is harder to attack stair-bases in CTF but i'd put it down to how it worked previously being more unpredictable as a result of Hit Detection + different type of blink.

Thanks to everyone who has played, obviously this couldn't have happened without players and several of you stuck around for several hours.
It's probably expected that we intend to add new and improved event prizes in future, but as a further incentive we will be looking to implement event-specific statistics as part of an online leader board to accompany sparring/PKing/other types of stats, which can also be linked to in game.

Can possibly repeat the process of hosting CTF next week/on a weekly basis if anyone is interested.

So what advantage/disadvantage is that?

Mark Sir Link 01-24-2010 09:39 PM

people defending something to the left side of their screen are able to continuously strafe up and down while facing the right.

People on the right have no such convenience

While this is true, with vertical maps you can't face upwards when pressing up + left or up + right, whereas when facing down you can do so by pressing down + left, so it really applies either way.

Also while this may favour defending on one side, it could lower your chances when attempting to return the flag from the other side (such as the middle bridge within CTF Large) which evens it out a bit.

What we have done so far is primarily make the systems.

Team events are just one simple thing we have done with them (and that means any team event, not just CTF).

Quests aren't as far away as they seem either. The whole point of us going the custom system route was to achieve faster development in the future. There is no need to take my word for it, since we should be releasing other types of content in the near future.
