Bigger Avatars

Requested several times in the past. 100x100 is the standard size for an avatar, can we get an increase?

Crono 12-01-2009 02:43 PM

There's no reason not to...

maximus_asinus 12-01-2009 02:44 PM

DO IT

NOW

please?

CABAL49 12-01-2009 06:29 PM

I want my avatar to be this bighttp://ui22.gamespot.com/1461/cabal_4.jpg

Which is 120x120

Luda 12-01-2009 07:43 PM

Please

coreys 12-01-2009 08:06 PM

The maximum on the N-Pulse vBulletin is 200x200 and it works out pretty well.

Soala 12-01-2009 10:17 PM

Plz.

cbk1994 12-02-2009 12:13 AM

I don't really see any reason why they need to be increased in size. It's especially annoying for people using the new layout since it pushes the entire post down.

*waits for negative rep*

However, a small increase, say to 100x100, would probably be fine.

72x72 is extremely small even for avatars. Door had to crop her avatar and it wasn't invasive at all(I made it for 75x75, and not realizing I had the wrong size). 100x100 is nice and even, and decent size I think. Sure, there are lots of people still using smaller resolutions, but even someone with an 800x600 resolution would doubtfully be largely effected.

It can easily be changed though? Like a click or two of the mouse.

Umat 12-03-2009 02:19 PM

yeah, it's just a change of a setting in the admincp.

I highly doubt the reason they aren't upgrading the size is because it takes too much effort.

I really DO think they know how to make it bigger in the AdminCP.

Loriel 12-03-2009 07:07 PM

I would be all against this request, but since apparently Darlene does not approve, I am going to have to support it!!

CABAL49 12-03-2009 07:12 PM

Look at all that empty space created by signatures. It should be filled.

Sam 12-03-2009 07:13 PM

Stefan have definitely read this thread. So if he hold that bigger avatars are okay, he will change it.
It's not a big deal to increase it to 100x100 px but we will see if something happens.

Crono 12-03-2009 07:34 PM

Would make the Graalians happy. :)

Also consider that not everybody uses that layout:

The thing is, just because I'm requesting that the size is increased to the general 100x100 dimensions that most forums use, this does not mean that every single person on the forum is going to use up the whole 100x100 space. All this does is give us more freedom in what we can have as our avatar, because 70x70 can limit you a lot and simply resizing images looks crappy a lot of the time.

Of course they are, as soon as they get around to getting a new avatar. People do not come up with a concept for an avatar that takes a specific amount of space, they scale it down in any case and with your proposed change they will just scale it down less.

100x100 limits you about as much and you are probably still going to need to resize images.

On every other forum I visit the members don't all have maxed-out avatars, why would these?

Not quite.

But it is quite misleading to claim that changing the size limit by a couple thousand pixels will allow people to throw off the shackles of resizing images.

I guess we visit different styles of communities then! Just checked SA though, and everything seems bigger on there in general

You're right, I should have said "simply resizing 100x100 avatars looks crappy a lot of the time." I figured this would have been the counter argument/suggestion. The increase would reduce limitations though.

jorollychu 12-03-2009 11:38 PM

i'd usually support this but there's way too many creepers with furry avatars and lame anime and i dont want to look at that

My stance on it is, I see nothing wrong with the way it is. Every avatar I have seen looks just fine and is plenty large enough to see, and make out what it is.
It does not matter to me one way or the other if it is done. Apparently it is something Stefan does not wish to do right now, if at all. I am sure he has seen this thread, or one of the ones like this before.

That's probably because most of us don't like resizing. So we adapt to the whole thing and choose smaller avatars instead.

I do not like resizing either, but if everybody else uses 100x100 avatars, I am going to have to resize my avatar too or it will be the smallest

What looks better? http://dlots.revora.net/images/avata..._rev_small.gif

Remember my Deadpool avatar? Probably not cause you couldn't tell what it was. Also want animated avatars.

The bigger one looks slightly better, but it is also animated, which I hope they dont enable, unless they put limitations on what is permitted.

Door 12-04-2009 06:48 PM

Like... I dunno, file size limitations? Poorly made static avatars with high color count and poor compression can be way larger to download than a most animated images, all that is needed is a reasonable file-size limit.

Dnegel 12-04-2009 07:11 PM

I find your avatar funny Dusty, it got 5 colors. :3

I have to agree on this. A limit is needful. It's already sometimes annoying when you open a thread with lots of big images or a big (and sometimes also bugging gif).
I think a commensurate solution would be size limit 100x100 px and a data size of 40 KB (animated) would be ok.
