NPC Deleted
 

Over at N-Pulse just now we discovered an NPC (EventControl) was removed. Not sure when, or how, but there is no log of it being deleted by any staff member, it's not in the npcs folder within file manager or the NPCs list.

I reset the NPC-Server hoping this may fix the problem since this has happened one other time on our Debug server, but unfortunately, it did not.

I know a single weapon cannot be restored alone, just the whole server as whole, but any suggestions or ideas?

I guess the best thing would be.. Restoring the whole server since you don't really have a choice far as i know?

The weapon/NPC can certainly be restored, you just need Stefan to retrieve it. You can email him ([email protected]) if it's an emergency.

Check if the file for it is still in weapons/, npcs/ or scripts folder (sometimes things disappear from NC without actually being deleted).

A single weapon can be restored yes, it's possible maybe that someone accidentally destroyed the weapon with a script. If you write a ticket including the date known of the last time it was online then maybe it's possible to get it restored.

Is Stefan the only person who has the ability to retrieve a backup?

Thanks for the quick responses guys, somehow figured a ticket wouldn't be needed so i held off on it, i'll be making one tonight.

Any ideas on how the NPC got deleted other than it being another weapon? It appears that is ruled out.

Did anyone upload an NPC via file browser with a conflicting ID?

No, logs say nothing at all. Only people with folder rights to NPCs are Chang,Kay,Kez, and myself, and nothing was uploaded by them or i that would've caused this.

On Zodiac a couple of Staff members got their rights nulled and attributes reset out of the blue as well. I figure it might have to do with that little downtime we had this morning.

Hmm yes good observation; whenever servers go down like that the most recent backup is restored-- so it's possible that if the weapon was recently created then that would be why; if that's the case then there is no possibility of restoring.

With how often servers gown down like that, backups should be done more often, while just overwriting the previous one.

Funny thing just happened, i'm trying to logon and it appears the servers went offline as i was posting this.

Or, if everything was just version-controlled, we wouldn't even need backups!

Just received an e-mail back, will be getting the weapon restored sometime this week. ^^

Yea, it was suggested before.

It could be possible to do GS2 with a text editor which is connected to a SVN repository that has serverside post-commit hooks, which could then manually call a command-line RC upload utility.

But, there is obviously no command-line RC upload utility, so that plan falls through.

I've PM'd Stefan about this before, but gotten no response (as usual.)


The major downside of this when compared to built-in version control would be that the repository is on >random scripter dude<'s server rather than somewhere more robust.
