Harpazo - Hiring!

Hello all, I have been with Graal for quite a long time, but took a hiatus during most of high school. Now I'm in my second year of college and am highly interested in getting a fun playerworld going.

My playerworld is called Harpazo. It is a victorian steampunk type theme, the likes of which I haven't really seen on other playerworlds. It's a genre that I truly love, and it would be awesome to see it successfully implemented into a Graal world. I am searching only for mature and dedicated staff members. I'm 20 years old and have money to fund this, and am fully ready to continue renewing the playerworld assuming things are going well. This isn't a spur-of-the-moment project funded by a random 12 year old who snagged his parents' credit card.

My expertise lies primarily in level making and writing. I can do graphics of average quality, and have done all of the initial stuff for the playerworld, though I'd like to hire somebody dedicated solely to doing graphics so I can focus on other stuff. I used to be pretty good at Graalscript, but now that the GS2 system is implemented i'm a little hazy. I have managed to get all the basics up-and-running however, but I'd also love to hire any talented scripters that are looking for a good playerworld to help out with.

I already have the makings of some "Lore" of sorts for the playerworld. I haven't seen any truly developed and engaging storylines in any world, though many claim to have it. The world of Harpazo will be truly immersive. Casual players can follow the core plotline with no problem, going about as they wish. The more hardcore RP-type players, however, will find that each character, place, and item has its own story and purpose. This is something I've already begun to implement, and really only need some talented scripters to help become a reality.

Sorry if that post was a bit excessive, hopefully I provided all the necessary info to anyone interested in helping out. Hop on "Harpazo" sometime if interested. If you want to help out just get ahold of me by any means, my AIM is BeatEmOrBurnEm.

Well if you really want screenshots I could post them, but in all seriousness all I can show is an exterior house tileset, and the stuff that's in the pic in my siggy. I can grab some screens if you'd like, but since I'm looking for people to do GFX, nothing's entirely impressive so far.

EDIT: attached is a screenshot of that house exterior, drawn by me. it's decent looking right now but I'd love for a better GFX artist than myself to spruce it up. I'm aiming to keep it "graal looking" (simple shading, etc.)

Codein 09-10-2007 08:22 PM

**** dude. I had an idea like this not too long ago. I think a Victorian Steampunk server would be totally cool.

Horrified 09-10-2007 09:08 PM

Wow, that many hearts really necessary?

rofl...

Yes. Yes, that many hearts are necessary. Clearly you've never lived in an abysmal victorian steampunk world.

Anyways - still looking for primarily scripting help, but graphical help also would be awesome!

Let's be not stupid for a second.

.5 damage against 20 hearts. That is no longer fun.

I'm not even going to actually use the default 'hearts' system. I was joking..

Thanks! I take a lot of my influence from earthbound and NES RPG stuff, I like the more minimalist styles. Still, I think the tileset would benefit from someone with better talent than myself.

Wait, so...what the hell is victorian steampunk?

It's very difficult to describe, as many disagree on specifically what it means. Basically, to break it down to its simplest level: Think victorian era (architecture style, clothing, etc.) but it's kind of a "hypothetical alternate future". In essence, "what if" in the victorian era, technology far beyond the time period was developed (steam powered trains, cars, robots, anything). It's a really cool genre that mixes the elegance and beauty of the victorian era wtih some awesome gritty technology.. I think this article has some examples you'll most likely recognize:

I like movies with that genre xD

Well, nice to see something unique coming in the genre :p

FF6 would be a good thing to look at for Steampunk.

Yup! that's actually a primary influence of mine. I didn't immediately mention it in my post because I knew people would jump on the "OMG HE'S RIPPING OFF FINAL FANTASY ZOMG FREAK OUT!" thing.

The offer is much appreciated man, but right now i'm really primarily looking for scripters, and pixel artists.

theHAWKER 09-12-2007 04:25 AM

So whats the game play going to be like?

zodiac style? (kill baddys, get exp)

or unholy nation style? (get money and spend it on items)

coreys 09-12-2007 04:41 AM

ooooh! I see what it is.
Oh, that's a good idea. I'd help if I could.

Well depending on whether I can get anyone to actually help me (which so far is still no one) I'll be able to do more things. I'd like to offer aspects of many different types of gameplay, to make it a more diverse and fulfilling experience.

Why do you people stick yourselves to one, two or three styles of development? It's not impossible that he can figure out a new way he will make his server. by how creative it is I'm suprised he hasn't gotten most of graal's developers.

Wow, thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated :) Yeah, to be honest, I am a bit surprised not one person is on board.. we'll see what happens. Hopefully word will spread.

It's usually the fact most of Graal's developers aren't interested by projects that they believe will go nowhere. I'm not implying this idea will fail, it's a good one but do to the ridiculous odds of getting a server up...

Well, it's just that all developers usually say "I AM NOT WORKING HERE, NOT CREATIVE!!111", and here's a neat, creative idea that could be executed real nicely, yet no one is saying anything.

edit:

It's hardly "ridiculous" odds. People just place themselves on every server and can't help everywhere, and next thing you know you have a guy who never logs on because you're one of the eighteen other servers he works on, of which you are not the two he actually dedicates himself too.

Not an excuse to run around every playerworld for a job and get there hopes up for absolutely nothing...

I could probably pull off most of the scripting on my own, with some minor help. It's just that the scripting resources are crap so I haven't gotten too far in learning how to port my GS1 skills to GS2.

And as far as graphics, I'm just going solo on them for now because I want this project to happen. Someone can redo them later if I actually get somebody onboard, but for now I just want this running. If I have to do the entire PW solo, then so be it. Help would be nice however.

UPDATE: attached is the latest screenshot...it's the beginnings of the "city" tiles. Don't be too harsh, as I said before pixel art isn't my forte. but for now this will have to do.

The level style kinda blows...a lot.

But the houses have a cool theme to them :D Not to complex...but I think it would help to have bricks or something here and there...for a little realism.

Yeah, I know that XD it's a tile test level, not an actual level. It's tough trying to merge multiple styles into one coherent one, so far so good i think but I've a long ways to go...I made a few city levels but they're too "empty", I need to think of good objects to put to mix things up and make it more visually interesting.
