Spell improvements (Feb 28)

A few things have been improved:
- the spells for detect magic and similar display an effect when they detect something
- forked lightning is forking now
- spells from heavy rod are freezing for 2 seconds, so you cannot cast too many of them at once
- double-click doesn't recast the heavy rods when its still in progress

CidNight1142 03-01-2006 12:12 AM

Yayyy, nerfed heavy rods! Thanks Stefan, keep em coming.

Once I buy a ton of spells, I'll make a list of what's working and what isn't.

Also, when you follow Brigid, it takes away the ability to cast cause light / medium / critical / serious wounds now. What are the other options you have? :s As far as I can tell now, it is not possible to level up with wis while using Brigid.

Summon Avatar.

It's rather hard to get summon avatar to work when you're at level 1 wis, Raziel.

Anyway, here's the first update on the list.

Defective Spells:

Light - Does Nothing
Faery Fire - Does Nothing
Ironwood Skin - Does Nothing, but a message comes up saying "A force shimmers around you."
Runes - Only work when disarmed. They should go off when stepped upon, like a real trap.
Detect Magic - Does Nothing
Detect Monster - Creates Magic Glows that don't go away for a long time.
Fear - Shoots out some evil-looking bats, which is cool, but misses every time. If the fear effect I mentioned is implemented, it will have use.
Confusion - Gives resistance to confusion, when there's already a resist confusion spell.
Mass Confusion - Doesn't really confuse anything.

Also, even though I have 100/50 grace, only 1 of Brigid's 4 low-level gets recieved. I have no idea if the others are working, because I can't test them out.

Waltz5 03-01-2006 02:04 AM

Something still needs to be done, especially with light, icestorm, and lightning.

However, this is a start atleast.

Ironwood Skin does the same thing as Armour.

Runes DO work. They only work if you can actually harm the person/monster that steps on it. It's to prevent p-moders from running around and ruining your mine field.

OasaTor_PK 03-01-2006 02:36 AM

Forked lightning its definately a high level prayer now, it needs a little bit of a damage reduction, I can kill raziel uberfast with it lolol

MasterNuke 03-01-2006 02:39 AM

Also, the duration of magic glow needs to be severely decreased.

--Chris-- 03-01-2006 02:42 AM

The brigid protection spells don't last as long as they should, they're useless and not even worth the cost of food + grace points. You also need to put in the spells for her you took out and supe up the ones that actually work like insect plague and avatar.

protozero 03-01-2006 03:11 AM

For the "Light" spell, I was thinking it could make a blinding light when casted on someone, like being Flashed on Counter Strike by a flash bang? Or a Sunspear like attack, or creates a area of blinding light that could act as smokescreen so you can hide while casting or fighting?

MasterNuke 03-01-2006 04:24 AM

Yeah... durations of buffs went down dramatically.

Draenin 03-01-2006 04:27 AM

My magic glows from detect monster have gone on for 2 hours and 30 minutes.

If this continues, all of Bomboria's going to become a staticy white blot.

Admins 03-01-2006 02:36 PM

About spells that are supposed to be non-working please read http://wiki.graal.net/index.php/Worl...s/Spells_Guide

I have fixed the magic glow effect to actually disappear.

The fear, confusion and mass confusion spells work, but they are not displayed and don't have an impact on the movement or spell casting yet. Also the 'scared' flag cannot be removed right now. When you hit a monster or player who is already scared/confused/slow then the spells will say that it failed.

What causes the scared flag to come up? Also, what are the current effects for fear and confusion?

I may create an account on Graalbible once I find a significant number of things out of place. However, they will be reported on here first.

x.x The stuff about non-working spells is strange unless you heavily modified the spells to do different things. Speedball is just a projectile like magic bullet. Vitriol splash isn't a spell, but an effect from the Balor prayer, Vitriol. Lastly, I don't understand why dragonsbreath, color spray, comet, and meteor swarm would not be in book form, since they're all balanced to work as learnable spells (High damage, but very high spellpoint cost).

Also, it should be known that you cannot create bolts unless you use create missile scrolls because you can't weild a crossbow and cast create missile.

Confusion doesn't have an effect right now I think, fear (scared) is reducing your chance to hit someone, but since everyone has that flag right now it is not unbalancing things right now.

You don't need to create any account to read or write something there.

About vitriol splash: it is an actual spell (test it on debug).

Admins 03-01-2006 08:51 PM

Update: Fixed the hit radius of the spells, that was the problem of the spells being too strong. So they are hitting more exact now.
Since they are back to their old power and the hit area is smaller, we added the freezing effect again and doubled the power of all spells.

Lowered accuracy should have more to do with blinding, as your vision would be impaired.

Also, instead of putting the unlearnable spells on books or scrolls, (Especially since people will be writing level 107 Meteor Swarm scrolls.) put the spells on heavy rods and wands, since they have more to do with charges than available mana.

Zero Hour 03-02-2006 01:10 AM

I think it would be nice if "Fear" inspired "Heroism" with a chance of doing 5x normal damage for 2 minutes with chances of 1/1000.

Meteor swarm can't be written on scrolls... and please no... the last thing anyone wants is the physique majors having free access to meteor swarms at low costs.

Confusion distorts your ability to create spell scrolls and inscribe basically anything else. I.E., try to inscribe a scroll of restoration and it will make a scroll of armor out of it instead. Basically useless, I think it would be nice if confusion had some kind of effect in battle.
As for fear, I don't think it does anything. Seems like it might add a bit more damage, though that might just be in my mind. Fear would be pretty useful, too, if it had some kind of effect.

Edit: I also think it would be really neat if Life Stealing, Ghosthit, Depletion, and all that other stuff was implemented into weapons too. I think the game lacks attacktypes as it is, maybe that's just my opinion.

There are no spells that can cause blindness, however.

As Raz said, light should, and a number of Dian's spells probably should as well, if they don't already.

OasaTor_PK 03-02-2006 07:32 PM

This was a nice update, all though its impossible to kill people now. If they have over 2 speed, they just run out of the way constantly.

Then use a spell that targets?

As for the color spray spell, I thought Create Pool of Chaos was producing a color spray?

Oh, so I should use a magic bullet? By the time its casted they are standing infront of me swining and all I can do is run.

**NINJA EDIT**

Okay, this is retarded. Forked lightning, which is leucs highest spell does a whopping 1 damage a hit to everyone I have tried it against. Thats WAY to weak for a spell that is that hard to obtain.

Oh my. Someone's mad that he can't still insta-kill 110s at level 19 magic.

That's a shame man, a real shame.

Yea, you're right Draenin. 1 damage with one of the hardest spells to acquire from a specific God is totally ok.

Somethings a little fishy in my last statement, can you find it?

I find that hard to believe... right after the updates someone was still doing a good deal of damage to Craigus, Lylic, myself, and others.

MasterNuke 03-03-2006 02:06 AM

Well now spells are too slow again x.x

alarid0 03-03-2006 02:12 AM

Aw poo :(
My heavy rod of magic missle is completely useless now...
I know there were some problems with the heavy rods, but they are pretty rare and expensive... now they arn't worth having at all.

Admins 03-03-2006 02:20 AM

Can probably reduce the freezing time for heavy rods again, I guess the main problem was the double-click trick which has been fixed now.
Probably a few spells need to be modified a little bit to me more strong. Also we need to modify the spell casting time, some spells should take less time to cast while some long-range spells should take more time.

Draenin 03-03-2006 02:25 AM

Ed brought up the valid point to me that the lightning spells should be modified to appear and vanish quickly, causing a lot of damage, rather than coming in slowly, lingering, and slowly fading away. It is lightning, after all, so it should be close to instantaneous.

TheJames 03-03-2006 02:49 AM

Not to mention spells take forever to cast off when all kinds of spells are going off (lag) in that period of time your opponet can track you down and kill you because of the lag and freeze rates

Draenin 03-03-2006 03:11 AM

The 2 second delay is also affecting normal wands, because after the spell casting animation is over, my character is still frozen.

TheJames 03-03-2006 03:20 AM

Yeup.. Just enough time for an attacker to get ahold of you and kill you.

MasterNuke 03-03-2006 03:35 AM

Heres a list of things that would be spiffy.

- Bolt type spells such as frostbolt, firebolt, lightnings, forked lightning should shoot crazy fast and deal damage in one large chunk.
- Magic missile and missile swarm both need a cast animation... my sudgestion is that both spells be given a very quick cast time and missile swarm track targets like magic missile does.
- Bullet swarm and bullet storm both still shoot along the old mudlib grid(like a tri-shot going constantly straight)... I think they should be changed to where it makes a bunch of bullets shoot in the direction casted and if targeted, shooting toward the target, but NOT track.
- All the wall spells don't have enough duration. They don't last long enough to be useful. What was assumed was that walls lasted too long and were likely based on how long my level 40 walls lasted. Now I see that both lower level and high level walls are useless because of the heavily shortened duration.
- Counterspell and counterwall cast too slowly to be useful. Also, the lowest level counterspells and counterwalls are nullifying higher level (25+) spells. It's just my opinion, but that is really lame. :/
- Another opinion - detect spells and buff spells are irritatingly slow to cast.
- Since you cannot ready another spell while you have something out summoned, can you make it so summons follow your mouse cursor? This could make it tons easier to control even while walking around because your character is centered around the screen and you can just leave your mouse centered on you on the screen to have it follow you. Also, this would make it easier to command it to attack specific things.
- Cone spells are too easily dodgeable. Maybe at higher levels make them shoot more "balls"?
- Higher magic levels aren't making that much of an impact on spell damage for the increase in costs (my icestorm uses 28 spellpoints to cast!).
- Single bullet spells could be given a faster cast time x.x

I dont know about that one...Bullet is already too unfair, and it is just about the only useful thing to mages now. I love nothing more to be fighting someone with phys when another person runs in and stand there for a second, then runs away, and about 10 seconds later 15 magic bullets come out of nowhere and nearly kill me. All you have to do is target someone and run halfway across the map and start bulleting.
