Translation System

I'm not sure if it's possible to make this, but if it is, then I think it would be a great add-on.

Translation System:

Each time you send a PM to someone, you write it down in whatever language you normally speak with, and when the person you sent the message to recieves the PM, the message will be translated based on the language they selected to be in their client. So, if I have an English set client, and I message someone with a German set client, then when I send my message in English, they will recieve it in German.

This would be beneficial for English players to understand servers such as Atlantis and such, and those players that are not native to English, will be able to speak with others without a problem.

xAndrewx 05-28-2005 07:25 PM

Do you want this as a script or built into Graal?

Gambet 05-28-2005 07:45 PM

Built into the client.

Chris 05-28-2005 07:49 PM

That would be hard to do. Usually translators do not conjugate the words correctly. Plus, you'd have to take into account that some people would no doubt use improper grammar and slang.

Well, if the translation system had a spell checker, then when you send a PM with improper grammar, it will tell you "The message could not be sent due to the imporper grammar in the message, please correct the gramatical errors and resend" or so? Would definitely get people to stop acting like they're "gangsters".

Just a suggestion.

Might want to make sure that the error message has the proper grammar too lol.

xAndrewx 05-28-2005 07:58 PM

I don't like this idea, sorry.

Fry 05-28-2005 08:08 PM

Yes, that's a bad idea, there's already a "translate" button (although it doesn't work at the moment... should be fixed), that's enugh.
Not until we've got intelligent Computers that can translate correctly :)

I will talk however I want in a PM, thanks.

maximus_asinus 05-28-2005 08:53 PM

whenever I recieve a PM that I can't understand I assume they're speaking in tongues and I try to cast whatever devil that is in them, out.

osrs 05-28-2005 09:51 PM

'whazup nigga, what hav u b33n up to' ?

How would Graal translate that ? :)

Benm00t 05-28-2005 11:59 PM

I think it's a good idea, but like Kai said, it just isn't feasible.

Haha.

Everyone should just learn English. That's the easiest solution.

It would direct the person to the hooked-on-phonics website.

Gangsta is slang for gangster, mr. Thug Life.

Velox Cruentus 05-29-2005 07:57 AM

Gah. Just close this thread already? It was answered a long time ago.

What happened to the whole "This message could not be sent" thing. How would you direct someone if you never got the message.

That whole idea in general is fine, but yeah, its just not feasable. Slang and grammatical errors just get in the way of everything. Even if you had the "This message could not be sent" portion, I get maybe 2 messages a day where someone types in full grammatical potency. Everyone else uses slang or abbreviations for everything.

If you're blocking messages like that with grammatical errors then you're basically forcing everyone on graal to talk and type perfectly. Something tells me that's not right. Oh yeah, logic.

Don't apply to logic what can be applied to common knowledge.

I like this idea, and I don't see how it is all that hard. You could have a combo box that has two or three languages and then "[Custom]" that would allow someone to message anyway. Would this improvement end being barely used? Yeah. Still is a nice addition, but nothing to get in the way of game additions.

Your age is 14, but your mentality is leveled with the toddlers.

zim5354 06-01-2005 12:19 AM

yah sure why not but i dont have the brain of a toddler i am childish.

Trevor 06-01-2005 12:42 AM

zim, if you would just use punctuation people could understand you a lot better. Start small and use commas. Then work your way up to using periods. After you have mastered the art of using punctuation, then start using (semi) correct grammar.

Remember, this is the Internet. You are your words.

Let me fix your sentence:

Yeah sure, why not? I don't have a brain. I am childish.

And this is the reason why I eliminated 'English Teacher' as a possible career option.
