Playerworld Review: Maloria (Classic Tab)

You wanted reviews, you got reviews. But only for classic playerworlds for now >_<

What’s it all about:
In the words of the manager “Having fun with mild role playing”. So Maloria will be a great playerworld for those who like role playing and those who don’t know much about it as it won’t be compulsory or forced upon you with strict rules.

For those who played Maloria before you will remember the Nation islands being on the left and right of the main island, this is still here but instead of picking a nation at the start you must speak to the leader of that Nation (The Queen/King) to become a recruit for that Nation.

First impressions:
From the start level you can see quite a few interesting features that are built into Maloria. Probably the most noticeable feature is a 'sim like' icon above your head, which lets other players know your current Health, by changing colour and rotating over your head you will easily be able to see peoples health with no problems at all.

Secondly you will notice the GUI which is a great way of organizing all of your items and weapons so everything you need is in one place, and allows you to select any weapon or item with either the keyboard or the mouse.

Levels:
When you head outside you will notice that the MAP is different to a normal map, and offers a guide to you while still being able to see what is happening around you at the same time, by being transparent and not full screen.

The levels are great and work great with this ‘Classic’ style playerworld. While some detail at times can look lacking it is made up for by the great houses and other objects that fill the levels.

Maloria uses lights well to compliment the level detail. The inside levels have lights in the mostly, which works well when the houses or areas are dark as the lights illuminates parts allowing you to see when you wouldn’t be able to without them.

Quests:
Because there are already many other things to do on Maloria such as role playing in nations, events, jobs and items there is currently only one quest, but more will be added at a later date.

The quest they have is great and not straight forward, in the sense that you will not just do it in a matter of seconds, which makes it good.

Jobs:
A selection of jobs such as Fishing, Baking and Mining will allow you to have fun while making money. And the jobs require you to think because if you rush the job or hit in the same place all of the time, for example, it will decrease the quality of the final product. So with a selection of jobs to choose from it shouldn’t be a tedious process to make money for those items.

Fun things:
As well as the fun that the players can create their selves from Role Playing this server has a lot of fun events from horse races, laser wars, slide ‘n’ dive and others to play with. So if you like a race, action or a team game then there is lots to keep you amused with.

Marking: PASS – Classic Tab

Good job Maloria!

Andy0687 05-09-2004 12:28 AM

I didnt think anymore servers could go classic, this is one of the main reasons we stopped work on ProjectR, is because Hosted seemed very usless to most of the staff.

Then why wasnt that stated? All the work we poured in would have paid off but when we were aruguing in that thread, and you and Storm both said unixmad didnt want anymore classic playerworlds, that killed the development in dead hault.

We had a classic playerworld on our hands, but it was the bad information and lack of answering simple questions that stopped it. :\

xManiamaNx 05-09-2004 01:48 AM

Loriel didn't like our scripts. We get to rescript our combat system now before the GST will pass us.

slide ‘n’ dive
It's actually Jump 'n' Slide ;)

More information can be found at our website, along with many of the updates we make. http://maloria.torontoview.com

We have closed the server off temporarily while we rescript the combat system. It will reopen after we get it all fixed up.

Thallen 05-09-2004 02:20 AM

Maloria is so cool, I hope it passes.

LegendaryTsukasa 05-09-2004 02:32 AM

It's not that it passes, it's that people like it, and people play it.

I'd try it out. ^^

WanDaMan 05-09-2004 07:25 AM

Bout time!, I can't wait!
Great review spark, nice snappys :}

unixmad 05-09-2004 07:37 AM

Good review

Very good review Spark.

I confirm that if this playerworld is accepted by the playerworld team i will accept it in the Classic Tab.

Woot it's passed I believe, eventhough it still has 2-3 more reviews, I can tell it's going to pass.. ^^

Dach 05-09-2004 08:10 AM

agagasdgasdg!?
bah, remind me to turn me speakers off next time I try to connect to maloria at 3am x_x

VeX_RaT_Boy 05-09-2004 09:39 AM

Very good review.

Thanks to Maniaman and all the hard working staff for their great work at Maloria.

Ben (Loriel) failed us. :p

Ben: You see, your attempts to subvert the NPC Server's security by reenabling the clientsidedly disabled commands with triggeractions is not acceptable.

WanDaMan 05-09-2004 01:40 PM

GST Should fix it.
I'll be on later to have a proper look around mania ;)

Crono 05-09-2004 01:50 PM

After it goes up for 2 weeks it'll die like the rest.

WanDaMan 05-09-2004 02:02 PM

Ya angel will be there and then she'll go :P
I think this server might be quite good to be honest :O

kabouter 05-09-2004 02:05 PM

Yeah It looks really good.

Crono 05-09-2004 04:08 PM

Bravo looked good and then they messed it up. That server that started with a G looked great but lost attention. This one will go down too, just give it 1-2 weeks max. It's sad but thats what happens when you have around 50 servers expecting to shine over the ones already up. ^_^;

I agree. Instead of saying "You must fix that!", they should say "You must fix that, and here is how you can do it: blahblah". That would be much more helpful.

Lance 05-09-2004 10:33 PM

But, the only method to fix what Loriel described is wholly obvious...? That is, such attempts must be removed...?

Maloria Review

Background:
Loose basis in Role Playing, though not mandatory. This server is scripted to interact with players so that people wishing to roleplay extensively aren't hampered, and those wishing not to roleplay can still do what they want as well.

Quests:
A single quest is online at the moment which gives you a small HP boost. If a staff member hadn't told me what i got after i recieved it, i probably wouldn't have noticed for at least a week. [The HP isn't displayed numerically]

Levels:
Levels are consrutced on the overworld at what i'd called "on par" for the classic tab. However, levels around cities become more involved and earn above average for detail and creativity. Most of the rocks and trees randomly placed around the world can be mined or cut down and are not just tiles.

Graphics
The graphics are very well done on here. Not too far from the "Graal style" and also not too generic. One of my personal favorites was the suitcase with sock hanging out that was the icon for their outfit saver npc. It's little touches like this that gives a player the sense that Maloria has quality in it's making.

Entertainment:
Every good server needs something to entertain the players - even when there aren't any staff online to run special events. Maloria certainly has it's share of events, some unique such as the laser battle. However, the most endearing source of entertainment that i found was the potential for role playing. Seemingly combining the style of old Graal2001 and Era, Maloria has HP on most doors [and bridges!], so you can force entry into other lands.

NPCs:
Most of the NPCs are very well made. It is more than obvious how much time and care was put into scripting on this world and most of the systems work extraordinarily well. Some things could use a bit of tweaking, or perhaps a bit more explanation. However, even with those few things needing adjusted, this world would still earn a 10/10 for scripting.

Overall:
Server audience: Any constructive member of the community can find fun here.
Quests: Needs more. The storyline(s) could be a bit more involved.
Levels: Nicely done, up to today's standards.
Graphics: Exceptional
Entertainment: Exceptional
NPCs: Outstanding

Decision: Pass

SSJ2_Gogeta 05-10-2004 12:08 AM

GJ to the Maloria team. I'm sure it will pass, but the real question is will the players stay there ? No offence to the staff team, but everything on the server is already done on the other classic servers. Theres really nothing spectacular, I think we won't see a new playerworld survive untill a great new server comes out (i.e. Oasis, DK, Adirade, Sans etc...). What would make the players want to leave from their current community on a different server to Maloria ?

HoudiniMan 05-10-2004 12:34 AM

Actually Marloria has quite a few unique aspects... Have you been there?...

Don't think it's like old Marloria...

Curt1zzle 05-10-2004 12:47 AM

Very nice review. Nice enough to get me to log on and try it out :P.

But, one thing I don't understand... Shouldn't there be a time period before PW's are accepted to classic tab? Instead of rushing and putting it on the classic tab, why not wait a while and see if any much better PW's emerge. I just dont want any good PW's to not have the chance because the door is shut and full.

Anways, grats Maloria ;)

Yes!

This was the problem earlier, when we thought unixmad would disallow anymore playerworlds moving to classic tab :whatever:

It can be. Click the HP bar on the GUI. You can make it display just numbers, just a colored bar, or both. Same thing for MP.

(The quest gets you 5hp 10mp, and some cash.)

Awesome.

Maloria almost needs a manual, lol.

(wait, maybe readme, cause nobody reads manuals... ;))

If the playerworld was better than many of the classic playerworlds, im sure we could find room for it; one way or another... ;)

WanDaMan 05-10-2004 07:01 AM

Great review Houdini!
Two more now? (including GST?)

HoudiniMan 05-10-2004 07:10 AM

I doubt the GST will actually write or post a review of the scripts... That isn't really what they're supposed to do anyway. Just looking for problems that need to be fixed, mostly for security.

WanDaMan 05-10-2004 07:15 AM

Do they fix them or?
I hope they do, so then it'll be up quite soon.

HoudiniMan 05-10-2004 07:46 AM

Not really, they just kinda yell at the scripters to fix certain things... and then leave... lol :p

WanDaMan 05-10-2004 12:14 PM

Considering angel did ask for some things to be fixed, I have to dis-agree..
GST should know what to fix and then they should show how to fix it.
So then atleast they're doing some kind of work rather than just saying
"crap, failed."

VeX_RaT_Boy 05-10-2004 12:59 PM

Nice review Houndini! :D Maloria deserves it.

That's kinda how most people see it, but then some of them are slackers :p

WanDaMan 05-10-2004 07:12 PM

the keyword there is some? ;)

HoudiniMan 05-10-2004 08:20 PM

That's really just so nobody can take personal offense... :p

xManiamaNx 05-10-2004 08:34 PM

Loriel failed us in 5 seconds. Didn't tell us how to fix the stuff. Projectshifter told me how to fix the stuff, but im not a good enough scripter to fix it. :[

Dach 05-10-2004 10:35 PM

erm... as Lance already said, what Loriel failed you on doesn't take a whole lot of thought to fix :\ (unless you left out a bunch of other stuff that was bad)
stop complaining, besides, when a scripter is told what part of a script is broke, they usually know how to fix it, I doubt any of them would ignore a decent request for help on how to fix problems anyway, aslong as they're not busy, in which case I'd suggest asking someone else instead of leaving the GST as your last lifeline (damn pop-culture screwing my slang)
