Castles (Like Brad's idea, but completely different)

I was thinking back to an idea Brad had a while ago --- castles which different kingdoms could claim --- and it got me thinking. Why bother adding a Classic building with a few arbitrary additions, when you could take it to a whole new level completely?

As it is, all the kingdoms have a castle, which are occasionally attacked by other kingdoms. The things is, there's no real way of "beating" them there. Me and Nindaen can order all the Dustariians we can find to attack the Zormite Castle, and we can kill all the Zormites there, but in the end does it really matter? Zormites respawn, Dustariians respawn, and the process repeats itself until one side gets too bored to continue. It's one of the reasons Kingdom wars rarely work out, because there's no way to tell who the winner really is, and even if you lose there's no consequences.

So imagine this: Kingdoms build a castle in them for themselves. Kingdoms members, gather stone from quarries, carry it over to a pre-defined site (one per kingdom, to start off) and mash the D button real good to make a turret. Obviously, there would be no interiors; just outside levels accesible only to the Kingdom. Kingdoms than purchase, with gralat different defense systems --- cannons, those nifty arrow shooters, et cetera. Prices would be high enough to keep kingdoms from buying too many, but low enough to keep them accesible to people without thousands of gralat. 500 - 700 g for an average castle would be ample, I think.

Now get this. You build yourself a big old castle, buy all the neato defenses, and watch it burn to the ground. Other kingdoms can sneak over, and attack your castle. Using weapons either given to you automatically or purchased in the game, you attack the enemie's castle. The turret (or whatever) for each castle has a health meter. It reaches zero, then bye-bye wall. Destroy the castle, and you've just set your enemy back a good deal o' cash, and reputation. Of course, nothing stops them from doing the same to you. This way, it actually matters whether you bother defending your castle or not --- no more running away in the middle of a fight. Similarly, as soon as a soldier dies, they're taken away from the battle. No more respawning, ya cheaters. :p

It'd be hard to script, I'm certain, but I'm sure Kaimetsu or er1c could do it fairly easily. Hell, I could do is, but it would involve pplacing compus baddies around the level at random. ;)

I think it's a good idea!
There should be more RPing in kingdoms!
This way, kingdoms would forge peace treaties, and wouldn't just attack each other because they felt like it.
And a massive war could be waged (with the kingdoms even hiring out to graalian mercenaries perhaps...)

Great idea.:)

Yeah, exactly. I don't want to start some kingdom flame war here, but it kind of ticks me off when Zarnage suddenly decided he didn't like Dustari anymore and attacks us for no reason.

Xythar 09-29-2001 09:25 AM

It could be designed so that castles could be captured, I suppose, but blowing things up is more fun anyway. ;) And it would be hard to devise a fair way to capture the castle.

nice good addition to my idea

Yeah! SOMETHIG TO DO WITH MY NONEXISTANT PRETND CASHMONES

Seriously, I love it! Stefan, put this up, or the next time I'm in Europe... I'll come over and eat all your crossants.

Yeah, you get a good deal of credit for the idea. The entire thing was based off the discussion you guys had a while back, really. Thanks. :)

Butz 09-29-2001 09:29 AM

Of course, it might be a good idea to make it so only members of a kingdom that has declared war on your kingdom, or the mercenaries hired out by them, can harm your castle..(thus preventing the random player from standing there and taking out your castle because he is one of 16 people on the server early in the morning....)

Someone needs to build it, first.

Also, I think this would make a reason to have a true treasury!

Yeah, that'd be difficult to arrange. Can only happen between certain times? Or prearranged battles perhaps? I don't know. The castle shouldn't be able to be attacked until it's finishes though, definitely. That is, it has at least two turrets and a weapon.

Or, it could be made so that the weapons are NPC's that automatically attack anyone not in the guild. So, some random guy sitting there attacking the castle doesn't stand a chance against 5 weapons firing at him at once. It should be made so that only members of other kingdoms can attack, though.

Yeah, but that would need work too. Maybe a donation box for the castle that the money is automatically deducted from, to keep any shady kings (or Emperors. Cough) from dipping their hand (fin?) into the box.

I've got it!

OK, you know how the Zormite posts work? Simply put a NPC in each castle level that allows royalty to declare war. When this happens, 2-3 things are triggered...
1. It is posted on the website.
2. It allows this kingdom to attack the defending's castle. (You can always attack their guys silly)
3. It is announced somehow throughout the castles.

Yeah, but that still doesn't keep a few kingdom members from getting up at 2:00 in the morning, and destroying the castle. The message doesn't do any good if you find it after the castle is gone. :(

Maybe so you have to wait 12 hours before attacking?

Well, only royalty can start the attack, and maybe there has to be like 5 or more on each side on to start?

_0AfTeRsHoCk0_ 09-29-2001 09:53 AM

Excellent idea. But let me point out a few flaws with this:

1. Who would want to spend that many real gralats building a castle? I sure as hell wouldn't. Unless the entire server becomes role-play oriented then it won't work. I think that if we had a role-playing currency that would work well.

2. Suppose it's 2am in the morning and some smartass member from a kingdom decides to go on a raid against a castle. There are maybe 30 people online and no one from the enemy kingdom. What will stop him from taking it over or breaking the castle? You need to add some sort of system so at least 5 people from each team must be present in order for the RP to successfully be executed

Other then those, I can't see anything wrong with it

But, that's a problem too. Make the weapons attack automatically and there's no point in sending people into defend the castle. Make it so that they have to be operated by the player, and some schmuck comes on early and wipes out the castle. Tupper's system seems to be the best, but it needs some tweaking. What's to keep a Kingdom from attcking another's castle while they're out at another battle?

FatherDante 09-29-2001 10:31 AM

I think it's an exceptional idea.

Tolerian28 09-29-2001 10:33 AM

sounds like a cool idea! :D:D

maybe you hold official RP Events and when there is like 5 people in zormite and umm dustari and there must be the 2 kings (emporers) for both kingdoms then they get an RC to give each member of the kingdom a flag that makes it only them can attack the castle or if you dont have the flag you cant do damage to the castle?

And make people who died respawn at their castle.

Butz 09-29-2001 11:03 AM

No, the people who die should lay there as observers..and when the war is finally over, all the dead people respawn... that would stop someone from dying, and then running back to the castle to fight again..(if you truly want to RP it..)

It would be over to quick. How about a revive NPC, that when you use on a fallen buddy (or enemy, to try to make peace), it revives them at their home castle.

So freeze the player to keep him from respawning. And once a war is over, that particular kingdom cannot attack the same kingdom for another day?

And I don't like the idea of reviving. You die, your dead. Respawning is one of the things I hate most about today's kingdom wars.

Of course, it's all wishful thinking and will likely never be done, but oh well. :)
