Everything that you're saying has more to do with networking and memory management than FPS issues themselves, really. Can we all just face the truth and say that the Graal client is a bit unoptimized at this stage of the game? |

You're forgetting all the GUI scripts etc.. that are always run, like the movement weapons, chat, map etc |
Stefan has made sure not to run many clientside scripts specifically for that reason. I've worked on the server for the iPhone before and he was very strict about clientside scripts. Most things have to be done serverside so it's not putting stress on the iPhone's CPU.
Downsider is right. There is slowdown when it comes to player's. Like I said, it's also on the PC as well. If you enter a level with a lot of players it can run horribly. I've heard people express lag during some of UN's more larger occassions with even 10x more power than the iPhone. It's not a rendering/graphics problem because iPhone's graphics chip is more than capable of handling it. However, a lot of speculation isn't really going to expose what the problem is as none of us really know how Graal handles it and what specifically is causing the slowdown. |
Hopefully Stefan can work it out, or make movement not framerate dependent :3
Seriously, when was the last time you played a game and instead of getting choppy it actually got slower? Even Quake and Doom had framerate independent movement. |
The strange thing is that the v6 Graal client on Mac is near flawless. I've never experienced any kind of lag resulting from normal use, even in the Era Concert, when we had 100+ players in one level with lots of lights. I'm surprised that the iPhone is having so many problems since it also runs the Mac client with some changes made.

The main problem seems to be players themselves.
Now that I think of it, it might be their collision algorithms, as they're not handeled the same as tiles and if they're handeled in an overly simplistic manner, then with 40 players, there would be an obese amount of checks that must be made. This could also explain why indoors doesn't have such a bad framerate hit (nopk, no collision). This is just me speculating, though. |

Despite it's lack of content, I really enjoyed playing with other people and some what addicted to cutting up the swamp for money! Haha, a few flaws but I had a fun time. Goodjob, keep up with the great work!!

I played on my friends' iPod Touch earlier, and while it was hard to move, it was really amusing for a while. There was also some guy who was just idling, advertising a website of secret Graal codes. They must believe that the images you use in "setsword" are secrets, it was really cute and even further reminiscent of the past. There are some bugs with the PK zones though, as someone was blocking the Burger Refuge entrance and there was a queue of people trying to get in. You could also take signs and bushes and hurt people in no-PK zones.

It is pretty amusing to get on. The people have divided up into mobs with nicks like "darkhero007 {armed knight forces)" and are running around killing eachother.
Someone called me a noob because I didn't want to join the "fire clan" :(. |
Read the reviews on the Appstore, some people call them "cheat codes".
Ugh. |
Ahahaha rofl, fresh noobs are good stuff. ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^

Help :( |
I know this is doubtful, but would it be possible for PC players to access the iPhone servers? I'd love to play Classic again!

I've got 5 bucks on a PayPal, but can't spend it on iTunes since I'm only 15 and don't have a credit card to link it to.
Say, I'll transfer to you guys a buck and you get me character customization? |

Can we get a god damn playerlist?
I would add my friends to the buddy list if I knew where the **** they were.. P.S. If there is a playerlist ignore my ignorance |
This thread seemed to of died, and I think that this project is way too important and could seriously help graal's popularity. (and i mean on the pc).
But in order for that to happen, people need to be somewhat drawn onto the iPhone version. Right now, no one knows what to do - there is no direction, no tutorial, no quests... there is nothing to do on this game. The game was released way too early due to lack of content. (unless this was intended to be a proof of concept, in which that is very silly..) I think it would be a really good idea to setup a small team of developers who are willing to actually dedicate enough time to this project for a more positive outcome, and no I don't mean edit the tileset to change grass into snow, and add particle effects. The first thing that should of been released, and still should be released is a tutorial. Something similar to the original tutorial in which you needed to push-pull some blocks, open a chest to get a bow/bomb, shoot something on a wall, and blow up a door with your bomb, fight some baddies (and i'm referring to the zelda-styled baddies, not these cheap and almost-impossible to kill with a sword baddies that are currently being used etc.. Another good idea that should be released is a quest - a taste of what is possible on this game. Let others see the true potential behind the Graal Engine. None of these new players from the iPhone preview know the true power behind the Graal Engine, and the endless possibilities that could be done. A nice spicey, unique quest could let others see the possibilities. Maybe even a quest that involves other players help as well, like the Stefan Quest back in Graal2001. It would also be cool to implement to-alls, and maybe a playerlist. Also the ability to message people who haven't reciprocated to your friend request yet (or who you don't want to add as your friend). I realize why this wasn't added, because it would be annoying for pms to just pop up on your screen, so the playerlist idea (maybe something similar to the friends list - at least for a basic design anyway) would be good enough as of now. Many people have already stated that they are willing to help, yet I don't think anyone has heard anything from Stefan as of recent. It would be nice of these upper-staff to let us, the players who actually care about graal - to know what they're doing so we can at least help give our input because we're the ones who are paying to play this game. |

But on a serious note, it would be nice as people may be more motivated by this as it's likely a wider group of people will see your work if you helped contribute towards the iPod playerworld. |
