Okay, back with some updates. I've come up with some ideas for mining/crafting, fishing, and farming. When I get around to remaking those jobs, I'll give more info about the new things. :)

I've mainly been working on graphics still. I spent around 3 hours on the tree graphic today, and I think it's turned out okay. Though it may need a bit of discoloration in the leaves so it isn't so green. Should I put some tall grass in front of the trunk or not? Maybe have the option to? Here is the screenshot, although the house is old, and the gralats/bombs/arrows part of the GUI is old, everything else is new/revised. Let me know what you think. Your comments are needed to make the server great.

If the grass is a little dizzying for you, I might need to lighten up the darker line so it blends easier. Not sure though. I sort of like the style. I have a whole lot more work to do to the tileset yet, so nothing is permanent. Still looking for someone to donate a server.

It all looks like a welcome improvement to your previous tileset.

Can't wait. I just want you to know I'll help you out with scripting anytime you ask.

Perhaps less saturation in the bright green parts?

I don't see how the option to can hurt anything.

It does seem a little dizzi'fying. It is hard to tell just how much until I can see it scrolling, though.

xAndrewx 06-02-2005 08:38 AM

I like the trees.

Fry 06-02-2005 12:17 PM

yeah, the trees look nice, but I don't like the grass, atleast not that much without anything else on it.

Myomoto 06-02-2005 02:06 PM

Hmm... the grass kinda looks like sand to me :X Try making it more "tufty" or something like that ._.

Trees: An option for the grass would be good, then levels look very different and not all the same old trees.

Grass: Yes, lighter would be good, it looks more like sand currently. Green sand though. Maybe more of a look to it that flat would be good.

Kaimetsu 06-02-2005 08:02 PM

Nice rulebreaking there, Spark.

I think the tileset is looking pretty good. The lighter rocks in the path seem to stand out a little too much, though. And maybe the stumps in the fence could look slightly more isometric? Right now it looks like we're looking directly down on them.

The trees are nice. But one question: This is all gonna be on a gmap, right?

Nitkizi 06-02-2005 08:56 PM

I'm just going to regurgitate what everyone else has already said; the trees look nice, and the grass needs to be improved/remade as it looks like green sand.

Zxion 06-02-2005 09:21 PM

I think having the option for grass on the base of the trees is a good idea as it adds more variety. As for the grass, I'd have to agree with everyone that it looks more like sand. Maybe you could redo the grass over again and recolor the "sand" grass tan to make it sand. That would be a pretty cool sand tile, maybe add seashells and things, kinda like Link's Awakening. ;)

EDIT: I'll also have to agree with Kai about the light rocks in the path, maybe not so many together? Make it more spread out? Also the fences could be shaded and stuff to make it look better. Other than that, I like it, keep up the good work!

--Chris-- 06-02-2005 09:54 PM

I want my tomato farming, pizza baking, faq hat and doll scripted in.

WanDaMan 06-02-2005 09:58 PM

That screenshot isn't Graal2001, it's more of a mix between both servers you plan on reviving :\

It's previewing a tileset. Don't get ahead of yourself. It's not Oasaal2001.

Damix2 06-02-2005 10:58 PM

I like the new trees, and the grass isn't bad.

I would like you to keep the old buildings though. I think that would be better.

Brad 06-04-2005 07:43 PM

yeah i agree with damix

dont make all new tiles I like the classic 2k1 tiles..well alot of them x.x

I mean the gold pillars and crap and other useless tiles can be replaced

Googi 06-04-2005 08:43 PM

I really don't see a need to replace the tiles.

konidias 06-05-2005 10:30 AM

All the tiles will be remade, but don't worry, houses won't change THAT much. I'm hoping to at least fix them up so they tile properly, and possibly just make them look a little better.

Any other ideas or suggestions for this revision? Characters are going to require a ton of gfx so if anybody has a character they liked in particular, you need to let me know so I can make it. I'm not going to be able to make enough clothing and stuff to match every old graal head but I'll do as much as I can. Once I have some templates done I will post them so people can make their own clothing gfx and submit them.

WanDaMan 06-05-2005 10:56 AM

Why not just get the supporters for 2K1 and create Oasis? it sure looks like you're doing that ;)

I take it this will only be a graphic change?
Is there any information on going back to the built-in hit system? (Not this is the only page of the thread I've read so feel free to slap me if it's in here somewhere)

Sweet, that means I'll be able to keep my awesome looks ^^

Sometimes great graphics dont make up for a great game. Look back at Fallout, Final Fantasy series, etc.

I pesonally like the old tileset, you can still do wonders with those 16x16 tiles.

But when it comes down to it... I dont care as long as it's 2k1 and it has kingdoms.

Your comments are entirely unnecessary. Explain how it looks like Oasis. In fact, get a screenshot of Oasis and point out the similarities. Please. They are two totally different servers. If they weren't, I wouldn't be trying to complete both of them. I don't know what you have against me, other than the fact that you think I will fail, but it's really stupid in my opinion.

Right. I'm not going to restructure the buildings or anything. I can only do so much to the building tiles as they were used differently throughout 2k1. As far as the hit system... The old hit system can't be used, as far as I know. not with new movement... But if it can, and it's not a security problem then I will use it. Otherwise a scripted version will be made, to match the default as best as it can. Good pking and fighting is a top priority for me on this project.

Yeah, graphics don't entirely make a game, but they help to attract people and keep things interesting. These tiles are still 16x16 lol... and they aren't being changed that much, just enough for a facelift. The entire reasoning behind new graphics is to match the new bodies, and to give the server a new feel. Classic tileset servers have gotten pretty tiresome to look at. I want people to be attracted by the graphics, and then stay because of the gameplay and content.

Fallout and Fallout 2 were excellent games. I wouldn't exactly say they had great graphics either.

Perhaps he was making those games a counter-instance? I don't know why he would instead of an regular example, but Zurkiba works in mysterious ways.

Final Fantasy VI was beautiful for its time and still is beautiful in pixel terms.

Think about it guys.

Pokémon on Gameboy vs. Pokémon Snap

zim5354 06-06-2005 04:01 AM

I'm glad I got that as a Christmas gift. Pokémon Snap was interesting for about four hours. Seriously, the game lasted about four hours.

This sounds like the best thing coming to graal.

I remember the same things as most people.

My Desires
1. Apple farming must stay the same.
2. The new tiles look nice, good to be different.
3. I think bomies could remain, even without accessories. (who cares)
4. Bomy pets were fine the way they were, item holding sounds good though, but what advantage does it offer over keeping it on yourself.
5. Old bodies (Classic Style not GK wannabe)
6. Keep UGLake it rocked hard, tweak it though.
7. Remove the hundreds of playerhouses that were added late in the life of 2k1 (Post the 4 kingdoms)
8. Keep the rcs to a minimum
9. Skills if used should be a YinYang Style (Not 2 sided though)
...
The 2 Scales might look like

Gathering Skills (for lack of a better word)
Mining - Farming - Hunting (Fish, Other huntable animals?)
EG. Default 2 - 2 - 2 (1 spare)

Producing Skills (as above)
Crafting - Baking - Cooking
Default 2 - 2 - 2 (1 spare)

A miner would naturally go for
Tree 1: 5 - 1 - 1 (Assuming 1 is minimum)
Tree 2: 5 - 1 - 1

However someone who likes Baking and Fishing could go with
Tree 1: 1 - 3 - 3
Tree 2: 1 - 3 - 3

I'm trying to keep it simple so its understandable, but This would work in if you did things that used multiple jobs eg a Pizza would use
Gathering Skills Farming and Hunting (Vegetables and Meat) and producing Skills Cooking and Baking (Base, and Meats.. i dunno)

but you get the idea... I hope.

So one could Excel in one or do well in all.. or specialise in certain cross job stuff.

Obviously you'd have more than 3 jobs but each job would use 1 of the 3 skills. But all jobs are doable, lets say a 15% to 30% bonus for ALL points in 1. (5% or 10% each if split 3 ways, thats in gralats for sale and speed and ease of creation mind you)

konidias 06-06-2005 08:20 PM

Hmmm the skill thing seems interesting but there are a few concerns...

1. people would have multiple accounts and each account would have a different maxed out skill, so setting up skills this way would be pointless as everyone would have all skills maxed out, technically.

2. where would the other jobs fit in? (cow milking, snowcone making, etc)

3. It would kind of suck to be forced to do one job only. the fun of 2k1 is being able to do different jobs when you get tired of one.

4. the new ideas I came up with for jobs would already increase the speed/profit of jobs. here, I will post what I've come up with so far:

Mining
Basically everything would be the same. You buy TNT, you blow rocks from the wall... However instead of hitting the rock with your pick directly, you'd do it through a small interface. There would be a vertical bar on the screen, with a target on the bar. A pick axe icon would travel up and down the bar, and you would have to press D (or S or whatever) to "swing" the pick axe and try to hit that target. The speed of the axe icon changes with each swing to prevent macroing. If you miss the target, you do a normal hit to the rock. If you hit the target, you do a stronger hit to the rock. Meaning if you're good at hitting the target, you will break rocks faster. The different picks could also affect this minigame thing in some way. It's still tapping a button but at least something else is thrown in. Suggestions?

Crafting
Crafting the rocks into gems/minerals would be sort of like the mining thing, except it would be a circle instead of a vertical bar. Icons representing keyboard keys would appear on the circle, and the hammer would travel around the circle. You would have to hit the right key as the hammer passes over the icon for it. It would look interesting in the game as your character would hammer along with your key presses, so it wouldn't be a constant hammering, it would be sporadic. (this idea is basically ripped from Britney's Dance Beat, among other things... so I can't really claim it as my own or anything. haha) Thoughts?

Fishing
Fishing will change in that you won't see fish in the water clear a day. They will appear as shadows. There would also be 4 sizes of fish (along with 4 sizes of shadow). You cast your line out near the shadows and try to get a bite. Fishing would basically work the same (unless anyone can think of any new ideas), except when you reel, the fish would tug back, and if you don't stop reeling, your line could break. To fix this, there would be a variety of rods you could obtain. They would have 3 attributes: Reel, Cast, Strength. Reel would determine how easy it is to reel the fish. Cast would determine how far you could cast. Strength would determine how well it would stand up against a struggling fish, as the weaker rods wouldn't even be able to catch the largest of fish without a lot of difficulty. Thoughts?

Apple Farming
There will probably be a few new farming options as far as fruit and stuff goes, but for apple farming specifically, there would be few changes. I was thinking there could possibly be different water cans you could obtain though. Such as a Durby watering can that can water 6 times instead of 3, and a Gold watering can that can water 3 times but multiplied by 2, for faster watering. I was also thinking that maybe to mix things up, a bug could appear at random on your tree, and you have to swing your sword and kill it, or else you will receive less apples. Of course to make up for the annoying bug, you would recieve more apples than before. Ideas?

As far as other farming is concerned... There could be tomato farming (for items like tomato juice), lemon farming (for lemon pies, lemonade, etc), orange farming (for orange juice... you get the idea). If I remove healing in beds/with pots, then you'll have to heal with foods, so it would be nice to have more choices.

There's another job that I have planned for Oasis that would also be fun to see on this server, but I'll keep that a secret for now. :)

Crono 06-06-2005 08:26 PM

mining better be fast...

{POST}

I like all of the ideas.

In reference to the farming, I think that the different vegetables and fruits should offer different supplements.

e.g.
(I forgot if we were using HP or hearts; sorry.)

Apple - 35 HP
Watermelon - (+2 HP/SEC) = 30 SEC
Lemon - Faster movement

Baking and cooking would add even more.

The idea of cash crops would be nice, but I cannot think of any way to make a crop simply as a cash crop. It would need some use to someone along the line of production.

How are they? as an olde player of Graal2001 I'd like to see what **** you come up with.

Okay, a tileset. Now if you're planning to revive Graal2001 why not revive it instead of making it new. Didn't you have some jobs what didn't keep you pressing the buttons on Oasis or something?

You are right on one thing, I believe you will fail even if it gets online. Thats my opinion.

It was revived before, onto the Classic list and failed. Why? Because nothing had changed really. It needs new things for it to survive, so they can't just bring it back to public without adding new things.

Nothing had changed, many levels where undetailed and alot of the stuff planned never got put in motion.

Edit:

Yes, I do agree with Spark that nothing much changed. I don't approve on the tileset.
