Then why did'nt you tell anyone?

LOL, a good deal of people don't have IRC, but it would probably be best there. Give +aop to the GST and then make it so that you need +v to talk while lessons are on, and then take it off afterwards for questions.
Don't worry you're little head about it. I've got bots to handle it all.

Amagius 07-07-2003 06:51 AM

I like. Sure.

I for one would be extrememly honored to apply for classes. After announcing my goals for a playerworld (perhaps a bit preemptively in retrospect), I immediately began to re-teach myself G-Script and the plethora of new commands since I stopped coding back in 2000. Just having a decent commands.rtf and some basic example knowledge only gets me so far. I might spend 30 minutes trying to figure out what x command does, when I could just ask a person instead. So far Giltwist has been good about this, but there's another problem. I still really want to know more about the nuances of the G-Script language and the most efficient way to do the same thing. Some examples and lessons would teach me more than anything, as applied stuff lets you see more then just the what x command does.

Sign me up, Kai. If you start lesson's I wont miss a single one, guarenteed*.

*not a guarentee

Nick1988 07-08-2003 05:31 AM

I could use some classes as well, I can only script a few simple things. Count me in.

xPuppetMasterx 07-08-2003 05:44 AM

Count me in as well. Although Projectshifter has already helped me out a bit, I would still like somone else's perspective.

Birdbird_0 07-08-2003 10:32 AM

I need to learn how to script, I've gone over the txt in the graal folder, I still don't get it :asleep: I'd be a miracle if anyone could teach me to script

Oh, yes, learning new things is such a pain and a bore...I mean, for learning to occur, you actually have to not be closed-minded! And we all know how difficult it is to do that!

And you're right...people are entitled to be ignorant!

But alas, I have forgotten! You are such a better scripter than all of the rest of us, you don't need to learn anything at all! In fact, you already know so much more than everyone else, you should be teaching that class!:p

Myomoto 07-08-2003 03:46 PM

Erhm.. maybe i just didn't got it all, but what time zone will the leasons be in? I mean i live in Denmark and we are 9 hours forward USA here ._.
But sure, sign me up for leasons, i have tried to learn a little my self but it never turn out to work... Teach me!!! >:O RaWr!

I live in England, so I'm sympathetic to those who don't live in the American time zones. I'm sure we'll be able to work something out to benefit everybody.

Myomoto 07-08-2003 03:59 PM

So you and Angel will put up a website with some school chat rooms and forums or something like that?

All the syntax. Most of the commands will stay the same, but they'll be called differently.

Kaimetsu 07-09-2003 08:19 AM

I'm not entirely sure how much I'm allowed to say. I doubt that Stefan would object, but I don't want to risk stepping on toes.

unixmad 07-09-2003 09:08 AM

It is a fantastic idea and I will be glad to be there too.

I am sure Stefan can be there 2 and give some advanced courses, like teaching how to optimize your scripts to not "eat" server processing time !

I will also work with Angel and Kaimetsu so we can prepare some exams and give Official Cyberjoueurs Diploma signed by us.

Sounds like this will go pretty well. :)

OMG! Than maybe we can have the school at graalonline.com or graal.net?

superb 07-09-2003 12:08 PM

you just opened up a can chock full of opportunity there unixmad. I commend you for that. :)

Erp, I just got used to scripting, now you're saying it's going to be completely different? x.x

I think I'll take the beginner classes. I'm sure it wouldn't do any harm.

All the same skills and principles will still apply, it'll all just be a lot more logical and consistent ^_^

There's always something to script. And seeing how your manager of a server you should script new jobs, and toys to attrack players to your playerworld.

Spark910 07-09-2003 06:33 PM

Forgot about this thread, has it begun yet?
Hmm maybe they should make a test, to see what we arleady know, and then we would have a rating, and certain lessons would fit with that rating, and we can take different tests to see our weak areas to see what to learn until we know lots and lots..

Does this mean all the old stuff won't work anymore? Will all of the playerworlds have to go in and change all of their scripts? Sorry if this has been answered before. Just kind of jumped in here.

Beginner class:
To be decided (depends on new scripting engine)

Intermediate class:
All NPC Server stuff. Somebody else can teach these classes.

Advanced course:
Coding standards
Strategies for emulating multi-dimensional arrays
Discussion of precalculation and other such efficiency issues
Maybe some mathematical stuff?
Various case studies (we get a problem, we work through it in real-time)
Probably some other stuff.

Hmf, i'd guess i'd be in the advanced then. Maybe a quick review of the NPC server stuff though. So I'm sure I got it down pat.

Fully backwards compatible.

And Spark: No, it hasn't started yet.

craig17 07-16-2003 11:53 AM

any idea when it will start?

Kaimetsu 07-16-2003 03:13 PM

Still waiting for the release of the new scripting engine, dawgs. Shouldn't be long now.

Do not blame me for Kaimetsu's recent liking to the word "dawg"..

tlf288 07-16-2003 03:44 PM

My guess that this new engine will be like what the NW crew started 2 years ago. More like C++, which means you can do more but will be less human readable.

The NW crew? I was only there for a while and I never heard of any such thing.

Anyway: The code won't be significantly less readable. At least, not intrinsically so. Even C++ is only unreadable if the coder makes it so.

From what I understand they were making it where you had to declare strings with a 'S' at the beggining. You are probabbly right because I was only 11 when they started NW and I don't really remember it :\ .

[edit]
To get back on topic.

Will there be classes to teach the use of PI and such to do things in circles? I understand how much of this works in math class, but when it comes to using it in any programming language that I use I just can't apply it. So this wouldn't just help me out in GScript but also in any other programming language.

heh, and my mom says Graal won't ever help me out in life  .

Oh, that was just a stupid little standard. Nothing new. I never listened to them >=)

Mathematical lessons might happen, but they're tricky. Graal's playerbase is hugely diverse, and everybody is at different levels of mathematical ability. Do we take the classes slowly for the benefit of the younger scripters, or go at speeds that work for the more mathematically-experienced dudes? Either way, somebody loses out.

I think you would lean the lessons more twords the advanced dudes. I may be saying that because I am more adavanced, but I think it would be better because I think most scripters are atleast 15+.

Here in the USA we start Algebra 1 at 15. I have already completed both Algebra 1 and 2 at 15 because I took advance classes. I can't really remember if what I learnt in Algebra 1 was enough to use math functions like PI in scripting.

Hmm, by having two math classes you could settle this. One for using basic math functions to their limits, such as using modulus. The other could then be based more on trig functions to be used to do things such as light effects or circles. This would mean more work on your part, but I tihnk it would be worth it.

Well, the complexity of mathematical principles is entirely subjective. At 15, you're not really at a point where you can start calling your knowledge 'advanced'. If I were teaching simple movement stuff then I could talk about unit vectors and stuff, but most fifteen year olds don't even know what they are.

Here's the thing: We do not have 'Algebra I' etc in England. So I don't know much about that.

What about the people who want to go beyond circles? I'm not going to put something so basic into my advanced classes, dawg. Not unless it's done with matrix multiplication etc.

tlf288 07-16-2003 05:31 PM

Well Kai, this is why you are running this and not me. You figure it out :) .

Senkasui 07-17-2003 10:03 PM

It could be like 2 courses: mathematic and graal scripting
Couldn't it? With more teachers and so..

Yes, but all the same problems with skill disparities would apply. I just don't think that teaching mathematics is feasible.
