Looks like the playerlist has been glued to the same spot on Prov for a week or so.

Well it appears that you will soon get your wish. Stefan/Unixmad are planning a system for playerworlds, which will basically eliminate low quality pw's, or put them in a different category.

There will only be about 5 classic pw's (excluding classic) once this plan is in effect. The playerworlds that don't make the 5, either go private for a certain amount of time, or there is another option that I don't think I'm to discuss.

Either way, playerworlds WILL be changed here soon.

(by the way, when I meant quality being spread too thin, and pw's joining, I didn't mean joining one server with another, I meant like getting rid of a server, and the staff on that server help out a different server so that more staff can work on less servers)

Merging staff sounds a little dangerous. You'll be mixing people together that may have problems with each other. It also would cause problems because of conflicts of interest between the merged groups. But of course, it depends upon who you merge together...

Yeah well I was just throwing my opinion in the air... this isn't like official news or anything (about staff merging)

However, I think Londeroth staff *might* be merging with Oasis. Loriel has joined up, and he has a couple of staff that he might be able to get to help out. This is what I am saying... like not force staff to partner, but like, if two seperate owners really like eachothers pw's or something, maybe they could talk about joining forces.

Hehe...that sounds a little better. I'm just concerned about getting stuck with someone I don't want :x

XxxxneosoftxxxX 10-12-2002 10:17 AM

James, you said that everything but classic should be shutdown, which really doesn't make sense, because then theoretically 2 things would happen:

1. people would stop playing graal, and moan for eternity with bad grammar and/or spelling (davidpsy)

2. people would start playing the other servers...

if 1 happened, it be stupid because you'd get all these people whining and *****ing, and then they would leave graal, which would end up forcing stefan and unix to go out of business cause 0 customors.

if 2 happened, well consider this...500 PEOPLE ON CLASSIC. I remember when I first started playing classic had like 300 people at peak hours, but 500, that would lag like npulse. plus all the classic players would be pissed cause the server would be full of newbies needing help with quests, which are already bugged as hell. but I mean no offense there, cause tyhm is good and works hard...

ok here's my lodown, keep the top 5 servers on the list. classic, UN, val, and prolly npulse and del...ok seriously val is ***, but I think it would be a good idea to keep it up so all the idiots would go there and not the other servers...Lots of you guys say 'oh every other server but UN and classic sux', but in reality, UN and classic probably wouldn't pass a PW test...

A server I have a good personal experience with is Shaded Legend, this is one kick ass server with tight staff. These guys have consistently good levels, not just the online start or what not...they are also going to be completed with new SL, which will be VERY nice.

Maloria is also a promising server. Minus half the staff. They have/had very good developing staff, pokilty was a very good scripter, and fireboyX was an awesome lat, they have pretty good events and good ideas. If you were to get rid of some of their staff (cyberX), this server could be very good.

Doragen Koden is also a very promising server...It seems to be very innovative and original, and I believe that gyoshi's workin mad hard trying to get good stuff in.

Another seemingly promising server is valikorlia. NOT. ok that was a joke.

As for the new servers, galbadia and gaia, well they don't seem very nice, and it upsets me that the only PWs that have actually been going up are mediocre ones that have just cheated their way through the PWA process.

I think the making of PWs should be halted for a while, except for PWs already up, there are more than enough already up, and more than enough private.

There are other pretty good servers out there, I just haven't played em, as for private servers like Bravo and faheria...

Ok bravo i'm gonna say this. You guys were a p2p server as andor, and now you're BO, when BO first came out, I swear to god their levels were ****ing bull****, that may sound blatent, but it's true and everyone knows it. Nobody even likes it, because standards on graal have changed and that is now considered a **** server. Now you wanna go private and 'redo' it. BULL****. No one wants that POS back, just take the computer that it's stored on and ship it to a poor kid in Columbia, because it will be of better use then.

Faheria, you guys got a truly awesome team, some of the best, but honestly, you got nothin....

I think that NW should get up! ok maybe not, but it'd be a big step in graal for that damn thing to get up.

Darlene159 10-12-2002 11:02 AM

Scary stuff, though I do agree that the PW list needs to be shortened so the remaining PW's can have a chance at having staff, I hate that these people worked hard to get their PW's up just to get them taken back down...except for a few of them which escaped the process.
Dont get me wrong, I completely understand it and agree with it, just feel bad for the ones who dont make the cut.

KujaBTK 10-12-2002 11:17 AM

Community in playerworld is very important. Thats what keeps the place active right?

I dont agree with you there....for some of the PW's, that may be true, but not being able to get talented people to help is a big issue, and is hurting the PW's who are really busting butt.

Yeah but the fact of the matter is, it doesn't matter how much dedication the staff have towards their server, if they don't have talented people, the server is of no use.

zell12 10-13-2002 01:03 AM

Which is why we're having the majority of the horribly imperfect ones removed.

It's not expected to be perfect.
It's just expected to be a reasonable standard and sadly most player worlds that are on the server list now arn't up to that standard.

Exactly... And it is getting harder and harder to find good talent these days, with the standards rising quickly, some people can't keep up, 2-3 people make super awsome levels, and all of a sudden all the people who were good a week ago are now a 2/10!

Warcaptain 10-13-2002 05:40 AM

well

i will be the first to admit that what is up on my server, isnt the best quality, or even near.

its just up there to have something up, make inspectors happy I guess, better than a black screen that transfers you somewhere else *cough*

but as for it being "uc"
no one should complain.

we've been "uc" for the summer, and september

and our planned release date is christmas.
unliek fah which is been in the making, had several diff managers, and 2 years later still isnt doen.

_0AfTeRsHoCk0_ 10-13-2002 08:33 AM

But the problem is no server online should be "UC"

They are simply abusing their presence as classic servers, there needs to be a crackdown, or it needs to go private

Milkdude99 10-13-2002 08:49 AM

I will really reserve comment till I see what these "requirements are" ; till we do anything we say now is pure speculation on what we "think " is meant by these unseen new rules.

What is online now , some of them anyway is the fault of who passed them OR just put them up and they hold the brunt of the blame for that. I have not nor will I point fingers on who needs to come down , first off it is not my place to say regardless of what condition they are in.

We need people to make tutorials etc etc... Scripting tutorials, explaining things fully and in plain ENGLISH! and other languages of course... Getting more talented people means getting more good playerworlds...

Maybe advertising more would bring more people to graal, there would probably be a percentage of people would would be very good level makers/GFX people etc 0.o; What it all boils down to is talent!

Heh. That would be nice. I think what needs to happen is to make the game appeal more to an older audience that might have those kinds of talents.

The current scripting tutorials are good enough. If anybody can't understand them then they should maybe rethink their decision to be a scripter.

So basicly what you're saying is that if you walk into a 4th grade (3-4th year) class room for the first time, and you dont understand all these numbers with an X and a = thrown in there in places, you should reconsider your decision to get an education? No. When you learn to multiply for the first time, the teacher doesn't say "Ok, so you do this and this then you get the product"... What the hell does he mean by product, we never learned that last year!

Just because someone isn't as good at math at your, or has some trouble understanding something doesn't mean they should be denied the right to know how to script... That's like not having special aid classes in schools!

(And Im not sure on the grade you start mulitplication in @_@ 3-4 was only an example...)

Fair point, I suppose. But the fact is this: If people can't understand scripting tutorials without help then they are never likely to be good scripters.

Nobody does. They have their chance in the form of the existing tutorials. They can't understand them? Then they're not good enough. It's their fault, not anybody else's.

But we're not going to get quality playerworlds unless we have talented people, and in order to get talented people (or atleast a good number of them) They need to be taught these things!

The potential could be there, just masked... How are we going to get to see what is behind that mask if we dont help them understand?

konidias 10-14-2002 08:00 AM

Kaimetsu is right. You're not going to get a rocket scientist from a guy who can't multiply numbers under 100.

If you can't learn anything from the current tutorials, you're not going to learn much from even simpler ones. You learn to crawl before you learn to walk but nobody is going to teach you how to breathe. Basically, if you have no natural abilities at scripting, you're better off doing something else.

But this isn't rocket science... Yes I know it was an example... But scripting is much simpiler than the <insert fancy space name here>... Perhaps it's not the pupil who is incapable... But the teacher...?

Cid_Night 10-14-2002 08:09 AM

Alright, hey all...I havent posted for a very long time, but this has caught my interest quite a bit and I hafta get my 2 cents in. If ya don't know me, I'm Cid...Admin at Doomsday, player there for over a year, and been a staff for about 8 months now. Now I only read the first 2 pages and then came here to write, so sorry if im back to an old topic...but there are some things with this i agree, some i dont.
I'm lead to understand that servers will be taken down...i agree some do...and that the total after we're done will be..5, correct? Now that I don't necessarily agree with...why make it a particular number...why not jsut decide which servers are good and which are bad, and keeping the good ones. Now I believe if we do that it'll prolly leave us with only about 7 servers rather then 17. 7 isnt much more then 5, but it will keep alot more people happy and make everyone who wants to cut the fat happy.
Now I have full confidence that one of those 5 would be Doomsday, I see that Toran rated it with Delteria as the best servers out there, giving it a 3/5, so I'm not really bringing this up as a defense, its more of a defense of my fellow players who might be crushed by the fact that their server, one thats good, but just not good enough to make the top five. We have a playerworld inspection team, why not use it? rate the servers on a pass fail, the ones that pass, leave. The ones that are close, give a couple weeks to fix whats wrong. The ones that arent even close (unmanaged, no players, etc etc) just cut out immediately. Sorry for the long post, but i think this is the most sensible course of action.

I didn't say baby-step. I said english. Someone could be very mathmaticly fluent and still not understand some concepts explained in a scripting tutorial...

When we go to school, there is a teacher there to explain to us in detail how, and why something works if we need to know.

A potential master scripter might see the graal script and perhaps, get scared?...

I guess what I am saying is... Hmm... What am I saying...

Make the tutorial more beginner friendly?...

Give up now before all the work you've done is shown how it really is.
