Nice, even contributes to that crazy prediction but personally I liked the little text boxes to specify a certain amount of days and hours.

The thing is, with predefined reasoning there is at least some consistency in the ban times that people receive. While sometimes I think there should be the ability to grant longer ban times for larger (but similar in title) offences, there should be set times that people can use for fairness in dealing with similar bans. Your system here would require you to set a manual ban length for every ban you make, and if you're a server that has a solid rule structure, you'd have to continuously look up how long people should be serving time and fill it in yourself.

Additionally, I think you need to have somewhere where you can define the ban time for the client receiving the ban; an "other" option is needed where you can write the reason in yourself. The predefined reasons limit your options and can often confuse people who are banned, as mentioned in the opening post, and a new list of options doesn't really tackle that issue unless it covers practically everything.

I agree with Rufus in this case, though I don't see any point in a field for a staff comment which is not shown to players (we already have /opencomments for this, and all servers most likely already log bans here).

Anything that requires changes to the RC is probably out, anyway.

A staff comment would be useful for expanding on certain scenarios within the ban history of a player on a global level. If I open a ban on a server and see that a player has been banned elsewhere, a short sentence aimed towards the player is less likely to be specific in terms of the situation or context it has arisen. I can make use of one of my bans¹ for this.

I was banned on Classic for going on someone else's account and hosting events because the players were bored. My ban reason states that I "went on an account without permission and hosted events" and that might suggest I'm an account thief or that I had been doing sinister acts on the server on accounts that weren't mine. I would have known what it meant if I'd seen the reason, but people looking at my ban history, deciding on whether they should hire me or not, or whether I've got a history of doing similar acts, can look at that and say, "Well he's got a history of stealing accounts." The truth would have been that I was given the password by the player for the purpose, didn't steal his account at all, and harmlessly hosted events which I had prior experience with. There's a difference between the two reasons, and a simple message that the player receives when logging on just wouldn't go into enough detail to explain the situation.

¹ I'm not disputing a ban here, this happened a long time ago and over and done with. I'm just providing an example.

That's true, I suppose, though at this point I don't think Stefan plans to update the RC (though I guess he had a new version in the works, so maybe).

Tigairius 11-10-2009 07:01 AM

I really don't care how the ban window looks, I just want the ban reason to be displayed to the user.

and not a generic reason. Right now, when you try to log on a server you're banned on, it just shows you a reason like "exploiting glitches in the game client" rather than the actual reason entered by staff.

It'd be a lot more informative if it showed the actual reason.

I thought u can already do this. Well i know u use to can
cuz if you pull up my ban history on rc
by open access and my account
u will c how people ban me and put cuss words ect on it.
so ya idk why they disable.

Yes, staff can put a reason, but when you try to connect to a server, it will just say "Speed Hacking" instead of "get off my server *****" like it should.

I think abuse of power is a pretty good reason to fire someone, i'd fire someone for abuse of power like that if i owned a server. The staff needs to hold an indifferent position, and not pull ahead their friends and ban the people they don't like.

I think having the ban reason and ban time separate would be the most appropriate. Or at the least have a time range for each ban reason, because right now the ban reasons aren't used as reasons, they're used as ban times.

Matt 11-10-2009 10:35 PM

And a longer, more specific set of preset ban reasons.

Yeah totally! My ban on Zodiac says "Banned Several Times, Ignored Warnings"
but really, the true reason is "They had enough of me getting banned to many times"

That's IT.
Here's a few examples of my innocence:
Lets see the time of these accused pm's, I can guaruntee you I was Offline at this time.
Another example, PM's aren't logged, so I would be the FIRST person getting in trouble for PM's considering I've tried to use PM's to get people in trouble and they never counted as evidence.
Another example.
I was not jailed or anything, I was just banned, for 3 days, Why? for what reason?
I don't understand this AT ALL.

Ridiculous.

What about two different fields entirely?

Ban type: <Default selections and times>
Reason: <This is manually typed in by the banning staff member and will be displayed to the user. If left blank, the "Default selection" will be set as the reason>
Admin Comments: <Comments about the ban, like how "Reason" is currently used, and might even make it easier than having to also opencomments of a player just banned and insert basic details of why they're banned>

This is simple yet would be a perfect addition to RC. Would save alot of hassle and confusion for those staff members involved in Player Relations.

I think everyone knows that for any important changes to happen hell has to freeze over at least 3 times.

I still don't see what's the harm in allowing players to see custom ban reasons made by the admin, do we not want to hurt their feelings with the truth and prefer to make them think they're bad people accused of "Sexual harassment"?

Edit:
I just noticed the last time I saw this thread was over a year ago and still nothing, ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Why would there be thread activity? I mean geez, hell hasn't even frozen over once.
