I'm setting it so your darkest color (which should be black) is black, and your lightest is white, using "levels" in photoshop - everything else adjusts accordingly, automatically.

It looks a lot better than what you started with, but I can see an easy fix to this little refusal of yours :P... just add black "highlights" here and there. Also, you may want to take notice of the format I'm using - and do the same yourself.
