Why wouldn't you work from the center?
From here it makes it easier to show the leaves overlapping, and slowly shrinking in size by the edge. Going from the edge would prove to be more difficult I would think |

I like this one, but you ran into a bit of that scissor cutout problem again. Maybe breaking up the border a bit would help.
