You'd need one level (maybe one per player) but none of them would need to be pre-tiled. You could make NPCs that randomly generate your whole world. Of course, you could also go and get a life, but it's theoretically possible. I've generated levels via NPC before.

My theory of Servers needing levels to exist still holds true.

Falcor 07-03-2001 12:45 AM

You could prolly make alot of arrays and warp the player on that 1 level and change the whole board but a double for loop that does 64X64 (1024 tiles) Lags like 5 mins online befor it can copmpleat the task. it even lags offline aswell. when you load the level it will lag for 20 seconds becuase its looping 1024 times.. @_@ I wouldnt recomend you try to make a server liekt hat kai. Although it is posible its no practical.

Yes the server needs a level.

Kaimetsu 07-03-2001 12:47 AM

Sure, it's not a realistic solution, but it's fun to think about. And it's a good way to prove my point against Scalper.

Actually I never described the level, I only said a server cannot exist without levels. Levels are defined as any file ending with a .graal or .nw.

But the debate wasn't about servers needing staff with the requisite skill to create .graal files. It was about tiling skill, and you could theoretically make a server without tiling skill.

True, but I am talking more in the lines of theory.

A server can exist without scripting (npc's)
A server can't exist without levels.

This is the only point I was making.

SSmutz 07-03-2001 12:55 AM

You need a level to put he script on, thus you cannot runa single npc script without at least one level.
Thus, scripts are dependant on levels. Without a level, there is no point in having a script.
Thus, scripts suck, levels rule, and tiling ownz you. Goodbye.

Scripts own you. But then I would say that. *shrugs* We're all gonna argue our side of the case based on what we're best at, but in my opinion, scripts>levels.

entravial 07-03-2001 04:05 PM

I remember when they removed all the .zelda levels and i was on one of them lol

SkooL 07-03-2001 04:10 PM

Scripts < Levels

Kaimetsu 07-03-2001 08:19 PM

You can impress a person much more with good scripts. And without stuff like races and jobs and stuff, a world is just boring.

grim_squeaker_x 07-03-2001 09:41 PM

Scripts + Levels > Scripts || Levels

Kaimetsu 07-03-2001 09:46 PM

And don't even get me starting on graphics...
