Don't complain about the number of colors, use your imagination folks.

That a seiken densetsu 3 tree? Man, square musta had the maddest pixel artists ever back in them days, SK3 and such ruled *_*

Although you can't really compare a tree to a monkey, because trees are made of like loads of little leaves. In my extremely limited experience, the need for detail can sometimes replace the need for shading and such. Tiny tree leaves are detailed, a spanky monkey with a banana isn't, really =x

Also, no zen, keep it at 15 or else i will perish x_x

Crono 05-31-2004 03:23 PM

I love Tony's.

Using few colors isn't that hard, it can give a better result in the end than a lot of colors ;) But you might wave goodbye to colored outlines and stick to the black though ;O

Black outlines are gross unless used properly. What are you talking about?

Myomoto 05-31-2004 10:35 PM

Black outlines can infact improve an image if used propperly, and i'm talking about that you would have to use a black outline if you have a lot of difrent colored items on your image, you would use too many colors on the outlines to be able to shade it propperly. And black outlines somehow "focus" the veiw on that area, it and also darken the colors close to the black pixels, black outlines isn't really that bad, they can ruin your shading though ;O

Edit: look at scott's monkey's face, if he had used a colored outline at the areas he's using a black, the face would have become "blured", and it would hard to tell if the jaw is a part of the body or infront of it...

teshy2 05-31-2004 10:41 PM

Black outlinings, especially shaded ones, does look awesome in most cases. Using black and a shade of gray you can create a cel-shaded feeling to the picture.

Goboom 06-01-2004 01:48 AM

This is what I have got so far, I am currently working on the head.

well I think we should get to use as many colors as we want but have a limit of three shades per color. But I can see how this could be abused..

No, it's the truth. If you're good enough you can get by with this project just fine with 16 colours... It's not THAT complex of a project... Monkeys are brown, bananas are yellow... You only need like 2 colours there... Wow, thats like 7~8 shades for each... Then again, who would want to use 7 shades on a banana?

Awesome job, Matt! I cant wait to see the finished product! :D

TonyRivers 06-01-2004 06:04 AM

no your wrong. You can not judge how many colors are needed for someone else to do their BEST... So don't even try to give me that crap. Of course I can work with the color limit but if it were limitless I could make it a hell of a lot better.

Mr-Cool 06-01-2004 06:04 AM

cuz its faster to use more colors.

Scott 06-01-2004 07:00 AM

lolomg cuz brush whoring is such a talent omg lollzomg

j/k, looks cool :P

teshy2 06-01-2004 11:29 AM

16 colors are plenty enough.

It's in the rules, work with it or don't compete. Simple enough, won't ya say?

I think they're going for a certain style, which does not require thousands of colors

scott, graphics are graphics. Everyone has different styles and to insult anothers style just because it is different than yours is foolish and imature.

I sugest you shut your ugly face up. Theres alot more work that goes into the kind of detailed graphics that I do then one would think. So dont you go saying I use a 5 second filter/brush and vala instant graphics.

I know art is art, and everyone is has their own style. However, to include yourself in the pixel art style community by saying you need 657659043 colors is wrong. I've seen wonderful peices of art with brushes, and other tools. Stuff that I know I could never do, without practice. T

In my opinion Butz's NES retro style is one of the best ones here, besides Galdors and Gobooms.

I'm typing, not talking with my face. Also, the cheif comment from Kai is old, get your own lines. Ps. Blur, dodge, and burn tools are not hard work. ^_____^ That robot I did earlier, while it may not be good in my opinion and others, it was bloody easy using those tools to make it look detailed. Atleast when Galdor uses brushes he has a specific style, and it looks good.

Ofcourse, this is a mostly biased post: Don't take it seriously, yo.

Look stop trying to assume the tools I use your fregin ass hat. The way I use them, it is hard work when you want to use them correctly.

And donald, it is easy to use brush-like tools... There's no denying it. The restrictions on this contest were placed here for a reason... Because this is a pixel art contest...

THANK YOU haunter i was just about to step in and say the same thing

anyone who wants to say that using brushes to color and throw in 5,000 colors instead of 20 requires just as much time and skill... is either lying to themselves and others...or is just a *****

it takes less talent to just throw brushes everywhere....then of course if you wanted you could take the brush strokes and just turn THAT into a lower color piece that looks exactly the same but still XD

Oh man, i don't know why, but every once in a while when donald gets angry, i jsut can't stop laughing at his posts, his expressions seem so funny and out of place. Reminds me of one of my friends, who just says the most random things -all the time-, and he never shuts up. He just sits there talking to himself, or anyone, about random things. Like, a bunch of us slept in a tent on friday or saturday or something, and he just wouldnt shut up until like 3am. I got angry at him but i still laughed at everything he said because it was so weird.

Congrats donald, i don't care who's right about how many colours you need to shove up your ass, you're a funny guy :D
