Ah ok sorry, Just read wrong :)

@ Alk, But The person unixmad has in the office full time is a very very VERY good PHP Programmer. and actually Unixmad has improved alot

"the way VB makes calls to the tables is somewhat unique. You'd risk heavy damage to the forums if you tried to run one, especially with this version of VB (2.2.2)"

It's not very unique.... pretty simple to modify it.

haunter 02-28-2004 06:18 AM

eehh... too much reading.. anyway... Before anything is added, I think those ugly exp bar things should be removed... waste of space...

zell12 02-28-2004 06:18 AM

Still, Alk, who would you talk to to ask Unixmad about what he does to the forums?

Ah, I see.

Regardless. Things could not be done to this forum safely, without prior things happening first. Not to mention to make any hack effective there are certain administrative things that must be done.

I know these things have not be done simply by looking at the forum.

Regardless, the point is moot. As it has been pointed out, the memberless is a useless tool on this forum that puts unneeded strain on the bandwidth/server not to mention the danger it psoes to the data of these forums.

Oh, MySQL Master, MySQL sports whats called Table Locking, If something was to crash the table would be locked and no data could be written, untill REPAIR TABLE was ran on it.....

Anyone who has worked with MySQL knows that table locking is rather simple to set off. Its annoying but safe, PgSQL also supports a "fail-safe"

Oh and yea, If the memberlist would put such a amazing load (Wow, your indexing and reading from a MySQL, no writting is done apart from to inodes) the mysql server would crash completely, then no one could write anything and there would be no data

but yea memberlist is a bad idea, makes people want to spam to get to #1

zell12 02-28-2004 06:32 AM

Anyway, I just want to see what Unixmad has to say, because mabey he will upgrade the forums entirely, or mabey he doesn't have to. Never the less, Alk, your do not know everything.

But regarding such matters, he knows more than you do. :)

zell12 02-28-2004 06:35 AM

I know he does, but he doesn't need to be rude.

Alk knows alot about how MySQL, But so do I. But he has seen the strain caused before.

ZanderX is soo far off on his bandwidth estimate its sad, A call to a database of 100Kb? I doubt it, The output may be 100Kb but MySQL is not sending the data out to anywere but localhost, and graal has alot of bandwidth....

(BTW, They are both correct that it would cause strain and higher load, Just not for the right reasons)

That's no fun, Alk logged off :/

I like candy.. when I was a little boy we played stickball.

zell12 02-28-2004 08:15 AM

Really thats great. By the way, fix the swear filter.

HoudiniMan 02-28-2004 10:09 AM

I second the ditching of the "hp/mana" bar thingers... They don't really make any sense to have because you don't use them. As far as i know, it's only based on post count...

Would be kinda empty there, what else ought we replace it with?

syltburk 02-28-2004 10:14 AM

hehe in start when I was **** on forums I entered the member list and posted private messages like: Hi would you like to be my freind? lmao

Desperate? No I just wanted to get some experience about graal forums.

I wasn't trying to be accurate, I just making a point of that there's a lot more going on than just point & click, plug in & go, etc. :) The figures themselves are bogus, I just used the first numbers that popped into my head so that I could have an example.

WanDaMan 02-28-2004 10:58 AM

Sounds to me like Alk want's his job back and he will complain about anything untill he gets it back, but he won't so it'll be a worthless battle ;)

R0bin 02-28-2004 04:32 PM

lol alk got owned.

Googi 02-28-2004 05:30 PM

Eh, well, if it's really something that would hurt Graal's bandwidth considerably, it should stay disabled. If not, I suppose it would be okay if it came back. I already know that I'm in 3rd place in terms of post count anyways.

zell12 02-29-2004 01:24 AM

I'd just like someone that is actually running the forums (HENCE RUNNING THE FORUMS; not people that think they know how it is being run). I just would like to know from Unixmad if the members list can be enabled again, and even upgrade the vb platform.

Damix2 02-29-2004 03:21 AM

I was always under the impression that it was brought down because it posed a security hazrd something about people being able to get passwords, Krakken I think might of mentioned it to me

MysticHaste 03-03-2004 06:51 PM

I'd say it's just the wasted bandwidth use if anything.

Its a pointless utility anyway.

zell12 03-04-2004 01:56 PM

Pointless? It has several uses.

Loriel 03-04-2004 03:01 PM

Someone could write a script to scroll through all the calendar pages and collect the links to people's profiles at least.

Or he doesn't because he sees no point in getting it back. And has other things more importantly in RL to attend to, such as his job.

Why would he want to go back to babysitting a bunch of whiney children?

zell12 03-12-2004 03:32 AM

Why don't you stop posting here, because you are one of them.

Oh ho. Such a witty come back.

Not everyone here is a whiney child. a majority of people are though. Why? Because the majority of people on Graal *are* children and teens.
