Let me tell you: Reading scripts that other people have made is the worst way to learn to script.

it helps me to understand the basics, like commands and such, I couldnt script for my life!

But it's far better to develop your own style and if you use scripts belonging to other people then you never really work at your own level. You're always trying to understand an advanced script when you're not at that level or something similar. Plus what if that person has bad habits? What if you spend more time figuring out what they're doing than actually learning? Trust me, going solo is far better. That's how I learned and I'd say I did quite well for myself.

God I wish I could script. I am trying to script a new race for the server I'm doing,but It's too hard. :(

Scripting is easy if you have the right kind of brain. I would say that making good graphics is difficult, but TrueHeaT would probably beg to differ.

How did you learn to script anyway? I only know basic stuff,When I started I just read through all the commands on the little list,and tried them. But I still don't know how to do half the stuff you can.

This is my scripting journey from day 1:

I read the commands list to the right of the window. It had lots of complicated stuff in so I ran away and start instead to look at the prewritten stuff (just the showcharacter things). "Hmm," I thought, and started changing things. Sure enough, my changes had a real effect in the game. "By golly!" I thought, "It does work!"

Spurred on, I tried inserting a command in, selected from the menu. Again, it did what I expected. "So," I thought. "I can put anything in here and it will be executed upon the NPC's creation..."

So, I looked through the list and found lots of cool stuff. Every time I found something interesting, I tested it and delighted in seeing the effects (For example: "Hmm... 'putexplosion' sounds interesting... *BOOM* ...Yay!").

Finally I started stringing them together. Copying the basis of the standard weapon scripts, I made a lil' thingy that hid the player and showed a sign gif where they were. It was a pretty poor "disguise" script, but I loved it all the same. I worked at it and learned lots of new stuff in the process, always returning to commands.rtf.

Eventually, before I knew it, I was scripting races and complex weapons. Even still, I learn a lot every day. But that's what scripting is about, right?

No. Because you can either talk over 50% of players' head, or under the other 50%'s. I keep saying over and over: Scripting is not about learning from a book.

same with me kai..for those who dont know i started around 1.4, and even though that wasnt long ago at all, i still am a good scripter (better then the average person)...youve basicly gotto have the right mind to do it, and be able to put things together nicely....i always went to Shadow Dragons site and learned from scripts they had, and looked at lots of different NPCs, and soon enough my scriptng ability surpassed those scripts, so i started looking at better scripts (like kyles bank card)...thats basicly the level im at right now, although you cant give an EXACT level or number to someones scripting ability

I hate when people brag about how well they can script and say they are better then most people, it makes me loose respect for them :(

Super-crazy flexibility. You try: stand up. Take your right leg and give it an experimental swing forward. Now swing it so that it's completely vertical and it thuds into your shoulder. Bingo.

And no, I'm not fat. I think I weigh 145lbs.

only time i say that is when i see a n00b scripter say the all mighty in script, then i get the sudden urge to strike them down with my mighty scripting powers...then theres a possibility of Kai striking me down....and thats the reason you dont attempt to strike better scripters down, cause then they counter with a 896875785 x betterly strikingerly power....

If you take away their npc servers, then what's the point of staying p2p, I thought that was what got people to want to make their servers p2p, because no offense, but any server that goes p2p goes six feet under, and you can't say every p2p server (with the exception of G2K1 of course) is dead, well, just my two cents..

that's like us using graphics from graal in our signatures and it being illegal

But im sure Stefan is perfectly fine with us using Graal images since its the official Graal board.


also, stupid? perhaps, but it stops you from claiming Squares Chrono Trigger graphics are yours, or Capcom's Ryu images are yours....I don't think laws are stupid, maybe they just seem like that to children.

have you ever heard of capcom pressing charges for someone having Ryu in their signature and not saying IMAGE BY CAPCOM INC blah blah?

No, but that doesnt stop it from being illegal.

have you heard of anyone arrested for J-Walking? Perhaps yes, but i bet its really rare. Its still illegal.
